Judging by the amount of responses and the various fixes people have used it is obviously a big bug in the game.
And yet, not a single word about it from Bioware/EA... I guess we're just f*cked.

Fixing this import feature is a must. I just hope we're getting ignored by EA/Bioware because they are hard at work on putting up a solution for both PC and Xbox users.

Who cares if it is not your ME1 charackter that you're importing? Why should Bioware care?
Why ME2 doesen't just check if there is a ME1 save file on the HDD or memory card?

Before ME2 came out, I went back and played some ME1. I noticed when creating a new character that it didn't recognize any of my previous game finishes. I think it was probably an issue with an ME1 update that caused it. I just the most recent saved game right before I finished the game, completed it, and Bam! my finished game now showed up on the new character screen. Coincidentally, only those that I went back and completed again in ME1 showed up in ME2 when I imported an ME1 saved game.
yes, I had the same problem for 1 of my 3 game profiles.
-----------------
To everyone, whose ME2 doesn't recognize your ME1 game saves -> all you have to do is to repeat the final battle against Saren in ME1 and so on until final credits start to roll out. This way the game creates a hidden autosave which is used when importing ME1 data to ME2.

Thats pretty much what I did but you don't need to wait for the end credits to roll.
When you have finished the final battle and get to the point when you speak to Udina and Anderson you will see at the bottom of the screen an Auto-Save will happen.
This Auto-Save is the link save thats needed when migrating your game into ME2. You should be able to load and play ME2 with your ME1 character right after that save point.
I would like to point out, from what I can see, this Auto-Save will be over written if you have started a new game and are in the middle of a campaign with a new character (or did not complete the game with another character), this is why you have to load your old profile in ME1 and play the last battle and wait for the new Auto-Save, to save.
This problem isn't just a ME2 fault with not importing the profiles its more over a ME1 fault as the end game Auto-Save is overwritten whenever a new game and new autosave happens.
I have a feeling that if they decide to try and patch ME2 to fix the import problem they will find that they will also need to patch ME1, but you will still have to play through the last sequence to get the end-game Auto-Save.
Hope this helps.

That's not accurate. I've started a New Game+, downloaded DLC, and deleted entire profiles and it didn't interfere at all with importing any of my characters.
The problem is with transferring your save games to a new hard drive. I'm sure a person here or there is having a different problem, but not the vast majority of this thread. And, as someone posted earlier, Bioware has made it clear that doing the transfer will cause problems.

Not quite. Starting a new playthrough or a DLC in ME1 would erase your save game and kill the opportunity to transfere your Shepard to ME2.
Besides, I will not take the time to list all the Bioware marketing pitches, web pages and announcements where it was clearly stated ''you will transfer your ME1 Shepard in ME2'' without any mention of the HD transfer limitation. Saying so is a lie or a fanboy assertion, with all due respect.

I should have said, "mainly for the people who have played the game on the X-Box 360, not the PC version."

I agree. In Japan this wouldn't be possible.
Customer is king? Not for Bioware.
I hope they don't wonder if noone will buy their overpriced DLC for ME2 in the future.

If you don't have ME and replaying the last battle is a way to fix your import that game should be cheap right now.
For the people that favor sell and trade I'm sorry but I have to say tough cookies that you got rid of a great game that's not Bioware's fault. If this issue is directly in the game save for ME it might not even be possible to correct it by patching ME2. They might have to build a standalone app based off ME save system to do some type of conversion, I'm no programmer but that sounds like a difficult thing to fix in the first place.
BTW I don't work for bioware and I'm posting in part as a devils advocate comment so don't flame my post it will do you no good.
I hope this issue is resolved quickly, something like this does not go unnoticed. Its probably not easy to fix without breaking something else.
EDIT: I think I seen ME on the full game downloads if you have a gold account and HDD space I would look into that if the replay the final battle thing works.

How about a patch or a free (or 99% discount) copy of the downloadable version of Mass Effect for those affected?

I played it completely through 3 times, got all the achievements, and a new improved ME2 was right around the corner. I kept all my saves. I experienced everything and I just couldn't imagine playing ME1 any more - the gameplay just isn't there. I should have been OK.
In retrospect I'm sorry I traded it in since I ended up paying $20 to repurchase it via "Games on Demand". That doesn't change the fact that BioWare shouldn't have proclaimed that ME2 would import ME1 saves without also letting us know exactly what hoops we would have to jump through in order to enjoy the wonderful feature.

I just read enough posts about complaining that they dont own the game and seamingly blaming that fact on Bioware.
When it comes down to it I have to add the comment that you can plan up and down but what is it like 3 years later now... you can't say that you would know their would be an issue with this.
As a side note does replaying the ending fix the issue? I have not heard anything confirmed.

You would have traded/sold your game long before Bioware would have been able to say "Oh wait, don't sell your disk. We found and unforseen bug with the ME save import."
Reguardless this is still a bug that they are not avoiding since they put alot of hype into it in the first place. Trouble shooting a fix is not instant thing. This is a good group you just need to let them breath and they will do something. I'm no programer but I know enough about programing in general and to be aware that their is always unforseen issues.
You might even be able to blame some of it on microsoft's OS on the 360 for all we know. Does the PC version share this bug?
