The problem I am having is that the profile with my ME1 data isn't my Xbox Live profile, and this presents a dilemma. I can play with my old character on my non-live profile, but of course that has obvious drawbacks. The most frustrating thing is that (as noted above) you can move a ME1 save file to another profile, but then ME2 won't recognize it. Or, you can play ME2 on the original profile. Now you'd think that at this point you could just save your new ME2 game on the old profile, log out and transfer it to another profile (like you could with ME1) but of course, for some reason, they won't let you move ME2 save files from one profile to another.
I can see how they might fail to make a feature available, but in this case it seems like they deliberately took out a feature that was present in the first game. Why would they do that?

With one sneaky move, Bioware just vaporized all good will I had toward them after years of playing KOTOR, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect. Of the current crop of games, ME2 was the one I looked forward to the most and The Old Republic looked to be the first game to ever get me playing MMORPGs, but no longer. Bioware just got their last pennies out of me. [Intercourse] Bioware!!!!!

Show of hands: How many have any faith in Mass Effect 3 working properly and not require we replay BOTH GAMES to import a save?
Didn't think so. Absolutely pathetic. I am so angry I could spit.
I absolutely do. Please. A handful of people having problems out of hundreds of thousands (this thread is only seven pages long, after all), even accounting for people who don't go to forums... we really are in the minority. The game remains incredible and one little (or not so little) bug WILL NOT destroy a hard-earned respect for a company that has done so many incredible things.
All this whining is no better than being given free lunch for a week by a co-worker, and then hating him when he forgets to return your only blue pen which you need for signing documents.
That said, I also am still waiting for a response or update, as replaying my second character's Saren battle didn't work for me.

Import worked perfectly for me. Some of you are just being not so smart and failing to realize saves are gamertag specific.
The problem isn't that they're gamertag specific. The problem is that they are Gamertag AND Xbox AND Hard Drive specific. Having a RRoD will break this. Upgrading your HDD will break this. Even clearing your cache will cause this to not work. And not all of us still have a 3 year old copy of ME1 laying around just to replay the ending, which is the only way to fix it.
Maybe you're also "being not so smart and failing to" read the whole thread to understand the problem before posting.

Surprising. It's been 12 hours with no response from any dev support? That won't go over well with the mass internet community or media...
Here's what I understand:
ME2 is only be able to read saved games from ME1 that were saved on the same harddrive (quote: "the original device"). This means that if you are using a new HDD and transferred your ME1 saves over, you will not be able to import them.
WHY? ME1 saved some part of your end-game info in the original HDD's cache. I understand that HDD caches do not transfer over to memory cards or other HDDs.
HOW TO FIX: You'll have to kill Saren again in ME1 to make the game save out all the necessary info to your current HDD.
If you don't own ME1 anymore, I recommend renting it. Cheaper than any used sale. Hopefully you still have an auto-save near the end-game.
I know this is probably a minor issue for anyone else, but I am still going to rant about it...
I killed Saren on 6 different occassions, now I have to do it again.....hope there is a save before the fight.

Um...why would you expect anything else?
You expected Bioware to be able to magically ressurect your ME1 data? How is ME2 suppose to import data it cannot access?

You honestly are blaming Bioware because you think ME2 should be able to import data from another hard drive? Really? New to computers/consoles?

ok, here's my story. At first the import utility could not find my ME1 saves. So I read somewhere that when you finish the ME1 game, there should be an autosave and it should say 'Citadel Tower'. So I went to check and I didn't have that autosave even though I know I've finished the ME1 game. I'm thinking that because I played the DLC missions for ME1 right after I finished the ME1 game and the autosave I had when I finished the game got overwritten. Good thing I had a saved game where right before the final battle with Saren. So I load that up and finished the game and let the end credits roll and sure enough, a new autosave appears that says 'Citadel Tower'. So I load the ME2 and tried the import utility again and lo and behold! My ME1 character shows up. So I guess and maybe, the main thing here is you gotta have that Autosave file right after you finish the ME1 in order to be able to import. Try it!
That's correct but the auto save must be on the Xbox you beat ME1 on. If that Xbox died but you still have the hard drive you have to get ME1, replay the final boss fight, and let it auto save on your newer Xbox. After that pop in ME2 and you can import your characters.
NOTE - Without spoiling the game, I found you don't carry your levels/gear over to ME2 but get bonus $$$$$ and resources for completing ME1. Your choices from ME1 do carry over but there is a part in ME2 where they ask you about the choices you made in ME1. You can alter the story line in ME2 a little without having ME1 on hand.

Not helping... :innocent:
BTW, change of storage device is pretty common in a computer don't you think? And even MS sells you bigger HDDs for your console...

I really don't think you understand what the problem is. Even if you have your old save files you may not be able to import them. The game checks for a "hidden save" buried in your HDD cache. The only thing that's stored in there is that you beat the game. The character import is from the regular save files that we all still have. All Bioware would have to do is use a different way to verify that we beat the game, such as checking our achievements instead of the "hidden save".
What is checking your achievement going to accomplish?
It literally IMPORTS DATA when you do a character import. That is how ME2 knows your answers to specific questions in the first game. It also transfers your character's appearance.
