I really think that if Bioware cant fix this issue that they need to add a patch with advanced features that alow us to rebuild are toons.

Such as a editor at the start in the New Game menu that will alow you to set up what choices we made in the 1st game. Something like have a qustion for each main plot point and the main side quests such as "Completed Tali's side quest: yes / no" and just let us rebuild it the way we had it. If they cant fix this issue.

The side quests mater. I played the 1st few hours with the defualt and the one saved game I was able to import (out of the 7 times i beat it). Lets just say that depending on if you did or did not do some if the side quests it changes the way some chacters interact with you. changes a lot.

Since I last played ME1 two years ago, I don't remember anything about the state of the ME1 saves other than their location. I found them in "My Documents/Bioware/Mass Effect/Save". The configuration utility from ME2, however, does not seem to recognize the location of the ME1 saves and it gives no error information when you press the transfer button either in the configuration utility or from within ME2. Everything is just blank and gives no response.

What is going on? Exactly what do I have to do for this to work?

I think the ones that you cannot select (orange) are the ones you did not finish playing after a new game+ in ME1.

For those of us who has ME2 that even refuses to see a file at all, we probably have to kill saren again.

No, that's completely wrong. I even said in my post how i reloaded and killed Saren again so I don't know why you think this. Hell, I can even start a new game with my 60 on ME1

I don't know why they wouldn't let us do that anyway. What is the harm of letting people tick off the boxes over plot points from ME1? "What class were you? Who did you save at this point? Did you kill that guy? Sovereign or the Council?" It's not like Achievements are hinging on this? Heck, it'd allow ME2 players who played thru and made one set of choices to try a campaign with different choices affecting the experience. Since Bioware spent the time writing all these permutations, why force players to run ME1 over and over and over to see all the content?

My problem with this would be that I frankly don't recall most of the answers. What was Tali's side quest? I know Wrex and Ashley lived and I *think* I let the Council buy it to get Sovereign, but other than that, I don't remember. Since the decisions are just a list of inputs, there is ZERO reason why Bioware couldn't allow us to roll up various scenarios.

Of course if the stupid import utility worked as advertised, we wouldn't be having this discussion. I see that Bioware is still refusing to own their booboo. How lame.

Tagential question: How do the face codes work? Where do we input those strings instead of messing with the sliders?

It's because when we say, "We gave you $60 for the game and it doesn't work as you said it would," they hear, "We gave you $60," and then go off to the "Happy Place" in their minds.

ok, here's my story. At first the import utility could not find my ME1 saves. So I read somewhere that when you finish the ME1 game, there should be an autosave and it should say 'Citadel Tower'. So I went to check and I didn't have that autosave even though I know I've finished the ME1 game. I'm thinking that because I played the DLC missions for ME1 right after I finished the ME1 game and the autosave I had when I finished the game got overwritten. Good thing I had a saved game where right before the final battle with Saren. So I load that up and finished the game and let the end credits roll and sure enough, a new autosave appears that says 'Citadel Tower'. So I load the ME2 and tried the import utility again and lo and behold! My ME1 character shows up. So I guess and maybe, the main thing here is you gotta have that Autosave file right after you finish the ME1 in order to be able to import. Try it!

Well, I caught a break, albeit with major PITMFA hassle and hours of lost playtime. I went to my g/f's and launched ME2 and ran the import utility and it found a Level 37 Infiltrator save - I had continued on to L50, but oh well - and it imported it. I saved it to a MU and ran thru the opening up until when you meet Jacob. Hopefully I'm good to go, but man I dodged a bullet that should never have been fired in the first place.

Reviewing the recap, I was surprised to learn that Wrex was dead. I hadn't killed him (like a friend had), but apparently Ashley did. L37 translates to 120,000 credits, 2500 of all the minerals, and starting at Level 2. Most notably, the opening scene as the Normandy is being blowed up* changed: instead of some guy telling me to go and being ordered to get to the escape pods, it was my Smurfy girlfriend Liara and her hesitation at leaving me reflected our history of pseudo-Sapphic loving. THIS is why I wanted to import my damn save.

BTW, on my hard drive, I found a file called Mass Effect 2 Import Utility and copied that over to the MU. Does that allow me to rerun the import in case I want to reroll my character?

I had to replay the final boss battle in ME1 before my game appeared in the import tool. Don't know why it didn't work the first time. Crap end user experience, guys.

A while back I ran out of hard drive space -- I deleted all of my ME1 data except for two files. One, which *MIGHT* be a new game plus, and another which is just the gamer profile data... it is possible that I am doomed.

I got my data back by replaying the end of ME1... but I'm still pissed that I had to blow $20 re-purchasing Mass Effect just to use the feature they advertised so much for Mass Effect 2. What a total cluster-f@#k.

Why does the game default to certain outcome in the first place? Why can't we adjust the variables ourselves? Simply being able to answer a questionnaire either through dialogue or from a menu screen before starting a new game could have solved many of these problems. This is an inexcusable oversight if you ask me.

Lets just say none of us had any problems loading our previous saves. what do we do if we want to experience other possibilities? like if we chose to do options C or D rather than A and B? do you expect us to replay ME1 all over again just to be able to change some game variables for ME2? the fact new game variables are unalterable just compounds the problem.

You guys must not know how agitating it is to find your old save files are not recognized, then to quickly realize you are not able to adjust your "history" by simply answering a few questions prior to game start or soon afterword. Each plot point that is different from your playing experience grates at you until you get so frustrated with the game you simply drop it altogether.

I had a RROD on original xbox and had gotten a new one. same HDD, cleared cache a few times as well.

Well, this blows: I started playing at home and it automatically found the latest file (the one I just imported) on the MU and away I went. Finish up for the night an go to copy the save down to the hard drive and get a message that the save can't be transferred between devices. I've seen this a few times before - notably Rock Band, forcing me to load a career from one device and then saving it to the other - but this is ridiculous. Since saves can be tied to gamer tags, WTF are they being treated as contraband or government secrets?

Try using the D-pad.

As someone ingeniously pointed out in another thread. It likely won't help everyone, but it did fix my issue.

Wow, still not even an ACKNOWLEDGEMENT from a mod? "Hey, we feel your pain and are working on it?" or "Shut your yap, ya bunch of nancy-boys or you'll just get the belt again!"...

The silence hurts even worse than name-calling. (And I don't wanna drop 10 bux on a rental for a game I already paid for once and traded in fair and square.)

Thank you!  This is what worked for me.  Never would have thought of the D-pad, since the 360's D-pad is a joke.

I'VE FOUND THE SOLUTION. Start ME1, go to Load Career on the main menu, load the character you want to use (if you have played the game more than once press Y to select the character that you want), reload your last autosave (this should load up the final battle with Saren). Kill Saren and see the game all the way through completion to the end credits. On the credits screen simply exit back to the dashboard. You should now be able to import your character on ME2. Its a crappy way to do it but you dont see Bioware or EA coming up with anything better!

From the little I've seen of it, ME2 looks to be a pretty sweet game. Unfortunately the last couple of days most of my free time was spent replaying ME1 with a couple of characters so I could import them. My disposable income was spent on rebuying ME1 which I had traded in on Dragon Age. Then today I spent about an hour ensuring that my EA account, Bioware account and XBL account all have the same e-mail address. Took some work but now they all have the same account.

I'd much rather have been playing the game.

Upshot is that, thanks to this miserable experience, I certainly won't be buying the Dragon Age expansion unless I'm convinced that Bioware & EA have all their crap in one sock. It's been amateur hour up to now.

I found this out on ME2's wiki: Transferring save-files

Casey Hudson, project director for BioWare, and Greg Zeschuk, BioWare co-founder, as well as various developers on the official Mass Effect message boards, stated that players should keep their Mass Effect save-files, because decisions made by the player in the first game have influences on their character in the sequel. In order for the saved file to be recognized in Mass Effect 2, the player must wait until the end of the credits in Mass Effect so that an autosave file can be created with the completed game data. Each completed game is viewable by the player when deciding which save to import into Mass Effect 2, and a summary of some of the key decisions made during that game is shown to help the player make sure they import the save they mean to.

Players who have not played the first Mass Effect start a new character in Mass Effect 2, and are brought up to speed on the story elements that have taken place thus far in the series. Hudson also stated that characters from the previous game make a return, provided that they were not killed.

When transferring a file from the first Mass Effect, players have the option to change their class to a different one. For example, if the player wanted to play as an Engineer instead of an Infiltrator, the player may change their character's class while still importing the choices made in the first game. In addition, there is a story explanation as to how the character's abilities have changed.

Players receive bonuses for importing save games; for example, importing a level 60 Shepard provides the player with one hundred thousand credits, ten thousand of each resource, bonus paragon and renegade points, and allows them to start at Level 5. Additionally, the achievement Long Service Medal requires the player to beat the game twice; however, the player can also get the achievement for completing it once with an imported Shepard. I hope this helps I will try this even though I dished out 20 bucks for ME1 ... go figure

I know, right?  It's sad for me, cause I used to hate analog sticks, then got used to them a while back and now forget the D-pad is even there.

What's even sadder is that I'd bet money that several of the posts following mine, then yours, then this one later on will be people complaining that BioWare is the worst publisher ever while all they needed to do was use the D-pad...

This worked perfectly for me.

I did my "Paragon" Character first, then my "Renegade" character. Played them both back to back. Let the credits run all the way back to the main menu.
Exited the gamme. Logged out of my profile (because I'm just paranoid of anything made by M$, doubly so where EA is concerned) logged back in and booted up ME2

Both characters available for Import. No issues.

You, sir, are officially coolImage IPB

Short and Sweet version.. If you can't import ME1 characters, and you dont have a copy of ME1 on hand, your stuffed...

There are 2 Save files required (as far as i can tell), 1st is your character profile, and 2nd is the autosave Citadel game progress file. If you start a 2nd playthru of ME1 then your CITADEL autosave usually gets overwritten, The problem i had was that i used save points to see the different outcomes of bigger decisions, and after finnishing ME1 i went back to an older save and continued that to see what the difference was. By doing that my character profile was overwritten. Only figured this out when i tried loading another profile and saw that my only character said 10hrs playtime, where the citadel autosave was about 25hrs.. So to fix that was the simple reload the citadel autosave and kill saren, then char profile is resaved with the save game char details.. pretty stupid way to do it since the save game has the char details anyway... Anyone stuck without a copy of ME1, maybe use EBGames 7 day return to your advantage... lol...

This is absolute BS!!! If you finished the game the import utility should find it! I have my files and it deoesn't recognize them. I wait on the phone with tech support for an hour for them to just say sorry.....what a bunch of crap. A level 50 Character that will not import!!!
