Motion Capture From Last Gen?

For decent next gen character animation just look at Destiny. That's the sort of animation I expected but I have recognised animations from back in Mass Effect in this gane. Probably did it to save money but it feels wrong. Just look at the jump animation to see what I mean. In fact all the female models look like they have broken backs... or huge bums.
Then there are the floating in air characters... Or sunk into the ground. Arrrrgggh!
It's not awful but not what I expected in a next gen title..

Many of the character movements/mannerisms while talking go all the way back to what was in Mass Effect 1.

Yep, you can see some of those canned animations in cutscenes throughout all their games. I'm assuming their cutscene creators just have a library of animations that they can choose from and that animation library is carried from game to game.
Bioware has stated that the Frostbite engine had to be heavily modified to support RPGs so they probably just moved a lot of their RPG tech over from previous games.
This game is also available on the old generation of consoles so that may have been one reason why the animation systems weren't completely overhauled. Maybe for the next game? It's not a big deal for me personally. I have much larger gripes with the game.

The problem with the recycled animations is that if you're a frequent purveyor of BioWare titles, it's easy to notice when a gesture is reused; this immediately pulls you out of the moment as you begin to recall the last time--and the last game--in which you saw the animation.

you expect them to create new animation libraries for each individual game? im sorry but that is unrealistic and way too expensive and time consuming. All new software is built using bones of previous ones.

So you mean to tell me no triple A game currently uses mostly new mo cap? if not ALL new? I'm not saying those games are better or worse but, CoD, BF even Assassins Creed titles who re use plenty of mo cap animations, also integrate tons of new animations every time, especially in cinematics and in game conversations/scenes.

This also reminds us as another factor as to why there are plenty of new conversations in Inquisition who do not get the cinematic treatment, you just get a general zoomed in fixed perspective.

I look at games like Destiny and then to Inquisition and think there was a missed opportunity there. The cut scene of Sera moving through the cornfield and then receiving the weird robot animation instead really grates. I love her character but hate her animation that make her looks more like a badly drawn stick figure.

They should've updated their resources, yes.
I must say that I witness for the first time in my life someone behaving like a BioWare's character. You know, their classic convo animation, with the robotic movement and that weird hip weight they do? I was shocked for a full minute, couldn't believe my eyes. It looks so unnatural in game I couldn't imagine a person moving like that irl.

They didn't use mocap at all.

I just want them to hire a bunch of animation grads to revamp some of the animations. And I say this as an animation student
The problem with most of them is that they are still a bit crude, and roughed in. Some of the facial animation seems like it is still in blocking plus mode. I see my FemShep from ages ago every time my character stomps around in Skyhold cutscenes like a drunken barbarian lol The real issue is not necessarily that the animations in themselves are awful persae but that the lack of femininity in the walk and movements (i can't comment for male characters yet, but I assume its the exact same animations) do not lend themselves to characterization at all. So much about character and intent is done through simple postures and movement. (as well, the fact that seeing continually recycled animation unnecessarily dates the game. )

I hate how all the females tend to swagger about during cutscenes like men with back problems who've been riding on horseback all day. It looks awkward and weird.

A: They have to make this work on last-gen as well, that alone should tell you something.
B: Unlike, say, "The Last of Us" most cinematic cutscenes have to take into account player choice and customization (appearance, armor set, previous decisions factored in). They can't just plop someone in a motion capture suit and facial scans into a room and say: Do the scene! It's why the facial animation is still stick in the uncanny vally. The facial animation and the physical animation HAVE to be done seperately.
There's still limits on this kind of technology. This is also their first "cross-gen" game ASIDE from being their first "8th-gen" game. Give them some credit.

Sure; while at it have a look at Destiny's budget, too.For decent next gen character animation just look at Destiny.

My female elf walks around shaped like an arrow pointing up, with her hand held away from her body like she is drying her nail polish all the damned time.
It's frustrating because this game is fun (except for the idiotic AI we get in Bioware combat). If the had made the animations like the trailer showed us then I would have been overjoyed. I keep saying Destiny because it just shows as a great example of what is capable on the Xbox One and PS4.
Here is one example of why I hate the animation. I can walk up to a cliff edge and be nowhere near falling off. I face away from the cliff and then fall off because the pivot point is actually in FRONT of you character. It's why I bump into one side of a doorway, correct myself (or try to) and then walk into the OTHER SIDE OF THE DOORWAY. It's just so unnacurate.

A number of armours in the game comes with bags and other things worn on the hip. I'd guess the animations take that into account and try to reduce possible clipping (you can see some of it on the inventory screen, where hands are held closer(My female elf walks around shaped like an arrow pointing up, with her hand held away from her body like she is drying her nail polish all the damned time.

Lol!
Classic Mass Effect 1 animation.
