Cullen (including his NPC icon) is missing in my game after completing 'Here lies the Abyss' quest. It also begun after Sera's prank..

Il fool around skyhold, hopefully it'll fix this. But yea, i also have issues of vanishing NPCs where u have to reload in order for them to reappear..


im sure these were unintended bugs, and i urge the devs to resolve this asap.

Glad to see I'm not the only one having this bug. It's a really frustrating one.

The strange thing is, I went through a 70+ hour playthrough without the bug happening even once. But 20+ hours into my second one, and it's been happening all the time. Sometimes they'll pop up after a while, other times they'll be gone over extended periods of time (especially Leliana). *sigh*

Figured out why Leliana and Blackwall disappeared, something faction wise must be tied to the mounts. I had the Dracolisk mount selected, the moment I went to the stables and changed it back to a regular Horse , they showed back up in skyhold.

Yeah, Cassandra didn't appear for the first, probably 20+ hours I was in Skyhold - I'd go to where her marker was set but she'd never appear. (I'd do the save and reload trick on the spot and everything, but she'd just refuse to make an appearance.)  Finally she showed up out of the blue as if nothing had happened.  Last few times I've gone looking for Leliana she has been gone; I haven't gone to look for her in awhile, so I don't know if she's back, yet.

I have found using the search sonar seems to pop the missing characters from time to time.  Otherwise I end up doing a reload.

Sera is on the second floor of the tavern, tucked behind that blind almost directly across the space from the top of the stairs in a room of her own. (more or less right above where Krem is sitting)

 

Vivienne is one floor above Varric, if you head up the staircase you take toward where you'll find Dorian and everyone; instead of going left through the doorway, go right through the arch and follow the path around.

(I hope the directions for finding Vivienne make sense, I'm horrible at giving directions.  So if you're standing in the main floor, you can take one door which eventually leads through rooms and halls toward the war room, the door directly opposite that goes up a flight of stairs.  At the top of those stairs you can go left through a doorway which leads into a library area where Dorian and others are standing around or you can go right through an archway; if you go right and follow the walkway around you will find Vivienne standing before a pair of tall windows.)

Ok lot of people complaining about not finding the companions dont even know where they should be...

 

Vivienne - On the second floor of the main hall. To go there, there's a door right in front of the door that leads to the war room. If you go through it there's a staircase to the 2nd floor of the mainhall, she is staying just next to the big windows.

 

Iron Bull - 1st floor of the tavern, behind the bard.

 

Sera - 2nd floor of the tavern, you have to go all the way around when you get up there, she has a little room.

 

Cole - 3rd floor of the tavern.

 

Cassandra - Behind the tavern, next to the door to the requisitions table.

 

Blackwall - Stables

 

Josephine - just before war room

 

Varric - as you enter the main hall, on your right, just next to a door.

 

If you go through the door next to Varric, it leads you to the remaining companions:

 

Solas - First room (room with painted walls depicting how far you are into the main story)

 

Cullen - As you enter the room where Solas is, to the right, there's a door leading outside. Go thru all the way until a tower, he is inside.

 

Dorian - 2nd floor of the spiral tower (library above Solas - as you enter Solas room turn to your left, up the stairs)

 

Liliana - 3nd floor of the spiral tower - rookery.

 

Now if any of them are still missing, there's only 3 things you can do to find them, and its not a fix, its a workaround.

 

First, stand next to their position (or where they should be), now go out from the room/place he/she is, go somewhere out of sight of them but not too far, and come back. For most companions this works fine.

Second, if they still dont show up, save your game just before you are about to enter their room/place, go in, if they arent, reload the game a couple times till they show up.

Third, go out of Skyhold, do something, come back.

 

Doing this normally fixed it for me, but i can confirm that Blackwall, Leliana and Sera were constantly disappearing, but with patience (and if you dont want to wait for a patch that fixes this) you can get to do all their content anyway.

 

As for Cullen completely missing - check if in his office is a soldier. Talk to that soldier, she will tell you where Cullen is and you should go there to trigger a cutscene, after he will be back in his office again. If you cant talk to the soldier, then I'm sorry to say that something went wrong, and you have to go back on your saves to find one where you can interact with that soldier. To me, doing Sera's pranks before talking to the soldier broke it. I lost 9h of gameplay, going back on saves to talk to the soldier first, watch the cutscene and then doing Sera's pranks cutscene.

 

If nothing of this works, you'll have to wait for a patch that fixes it

I never ran across missing companions/advisors during the game, but post-game I noticed a few were starting to vanish...

I've had this happen with Iron Bull when his personal quest triggered.  I just kept reloading new areas in Skyhold by fast traveling around the map until he showed up again.  It took me probably 5-6 reloads before he reappeared.

You can also just wait and after a few minutes, your computer might catch up and actually load them in.

 

Or quicksave and load the quicksave. Once the quicksave is loaded up, the companion should be where they're supposed to be.

Sometimes companions just don't show up for a very long time; I played for twenty levels in Skyhold before Cassandra showed up and I knew right where she was supposed to be.  I tried the reload option, I waited, I walked around the area, she just wasn't there; then one day I walked over and she was suddenly where she was supposed to be and has been there ever since.  So the companions are sometimes bugged in really annoying ways.

This missing companions bug is really common and painful. I wasn't able to see Leliana a single time since I am in Skyhold (and yes, I know where she is supposed to be).

Like I said in my previous post, since I arrived in Skyhold Leliana was ALWAYS missing in her spot. I tried everything : waiting, saving/reloading, do a mission outside Skyhold, etc. Nothing worked.

 

Since Haven I had a Hahl as a mount (I get him with the Deluxe edition) and I tried your solution : I selected an horse in the Skyhold stables and as soon as I did that, Leliana appeared in her spot and I was able to talk with her !! Incredible !

I have this same "Cullen missing after Sera's prank" issue, the soldier just stands there doing nothing.

 

Don't know how much back It'd take me to load an old save but it's a ridiculous solution to begin with. What the hell, BioWare?

I don't remember talking to a soldier, but I found Cullen in the chantry off the garden.

 

Blackwall disappeared and I don't remember getting a quest for him but I found him in Val Royeaux (his personal quest).

Yeah, first I thought it was just a minor thing. Leliana was no where to be found and Cullen was also gone. Then I tried to find Josephine but even her chair was missing. I tried to reload a few times but nothing happened so I thought I might try to leave skyhold, do some things and try again later, but when I came back, most of my companions were gone too. The only two who're still there is Iron Bull and Cole who is uninteractable. Thought I might check if it was the mount problem, but the mounts were gone too. Tried to reload from an earlier save, even tried to reload before the previous main mission part, but they are still missing. Guess I'll have to start over. Sucks to lose over 80h game time.

Ye i tried to convince myself of that for some time but its been too looooong. Im sure its a bug

Cullen is just too slow.

 

Leaving and the area and returning appears to fix this issue for me.

Guys, if u miss Cullen and don't see his NPC icon, go check the blacksmiths in the house right to where Cassy stands. It may solve ur problem

Well it seems Cullen is outside now...near the trainers. At least in my game .

i have the same problem with cullen dissapearing after adamant i have tried all that is suggested and still nothing. I have never had this problem on my first two play throughs. Also i have not touched sera's prank quest and there is no soilder in cullen's office i have tried talking to cassy and i don't get cullen's quest.

Try going inside the blacksmith shop.
