I'm getting ready to start In Hushed Whispers and want to know how far I can get before Champions of the Just is locked out for me. Can I finish that quest without choosing the mages and then start Champions of the Just? Is either quest line ever really locked out, or does it come down the end and the decision point?

Choosing Champions of the Just locks you to the templars. You can do In Hushed Whispers until you go to the castle without locking you in.
