Greetings,

I have to say I'm a bit disapointed by the forced mouse acceleration and seemingly no way of changing sensitivity. It just seems like a thing that you wouldn't forget, or that would be caught though playtesting, but I guess I'm part of a special breed that notices these things.

Here's what I've looked at:
  • Windows Mouse sensitivity has no effect, nor does "Enhance pointer" (aka acceleration)
  • DPI switch on mouse helps a bit, but it is not enough.
  • The "old" permanent regedit fix doesn't work either (don't know if it is supposed to work on Win7)
  • It seems the config file for controls are now in a non-readable binary format.
  • The "Camera Sensitivity" in-game doesn't do much (I didn't notice a difference going from Normal to Low)

Update: Semi solution: (edit: Old now.. try the solution below)
Thanks flies out to Rootercog and pyide for comming up with this/passing it on. This removes most of the acceleration for me, plus lets me set a more sane sensitivity.
  • Download and install notepad++. If you use notepad or wordpad to edit these files, you will not be able to start Mass Effect 2.
  • Backup and edit "Mass Effect 2/BioGame/Config/PC/Cooked/Coalesced.ini" with notepad++
  • Search for "MouseSensitivity" and change it to your liking. I used 0.5.
  • a) Remove one 0 from "DoubleClickTime=0.250000"
  • B) Change bEnableMouseSmoothing=true to false
  • Save file and start ME2

Note that ME2 will not start if Coalesced.ini doesn't contain exactly the same numbers of characters as before.

Another update: This was posted by pyide and should work even better. Again thanks goes out to pyide.

ALL THE INFORMATION FOR FIXING YOUR MOUSE IN ME2 IS IN THIS THREAD
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/784595/3#829186

  • force vsync off (vsync causes mouse lag in ALL games on lcd monitors)
  • disable mouse damping
  • disable mouse smoothing
  • lower game config mouse sensitivity to very low 0.1 or 0.2 if you turn off damping
  • (optional) to fix the mouse speed in the conversation wheel you can change the accumulation divisor
its all in that thread

Are you talking about ME2? Cause I just made another topic on the same issue while you made this, and I'm starting to get very worried here :o.

Yup, this is about ME2. It's strange because I didn't have an issue with ME1 mouse controls.

Originally played ME1 on the 360, but recently bought it off Steam to get a savegame ready for ME2, and the mouse acceleration is horrendous with me at least.

If it's equally bad for ME2, I might end up playing it with a 360-controller, which kinda defeats the whole purpose of buying it for PC in the first place. Mouse acceleration is one of those things that really messes with poor brain :(

It's in the options menu under "input" for "camera sensitivity" The settings are low, medium and high.

Despite the name it effects the mouse sensitivity across the board for aiming etc.. High feel about "normal" for the default sensitivity most fps games.

Failing that just go into your mouse settings and increase the sensitivity manually.

How come everyone seems to think it's a sensitivity-issue when there's talk about mouse acceleration? It's not the same thing at all :(.

(Mind you, I don't have the game yet, so if this actually effects acceleration, I withdraw my comment :P)

Probably because not too many people run into acceleration problems with their mouse? With ME #1 Adjusting the mouse sensitivity seemed to compensate fine for the awkward mouse handling, and worked much the same for me with ME 2.

Hmm... Been googling a bit more, and this may be a Windows 7 issue. PartyPoo, have you upgraded to Win7 since playing ME1 (since you didn't have any issues with it)?

As far as I know, there is no real way to disable mouse accel completely in Win7, but many games still have no issue with it.

Nah I've been using windows wesmosis for about 6-7 months now and have had zero problems with game compatibility since. I might someday upgrade to windows 7, but until it becomes a req for video games I really don't see any real reason.

Tried a couple of register updates now (most notably Cheese's Mouse Fix, reported to work on some games), but no changes.

I might have been to quick with blaming it on Win7 though, not sure. 2 things keep popping up when looking around the web, Win7 and Unreal Engine games, but not necessarily together.

Oh, and I am testing on ME1 btw (stuck in europe <_<), but same engine anyways.

Man, I can't figure this either. Changed the in-game settings and several settings for the computer but it doesn't make a difference. The stange thing is, it was fine BEFORE I woke up in the lab. ofcourse, they could have slowed everything down (including the camera) because I was in a burning ship. In any case, this is obviously a problem that can only be fixed with a patch.

here:

Mass Effect 2/Biogame/Config/Pc/Cooked/Coalesced.ini

open in wordpad, ctrl+f 'Mouse', keep looking until you see settings for mouse sensitivity/smoothing, play around with them.

You can adjust the sensitivity in the INI file which definitely helps sensitivity problems. However I have major negative mouse acceleration. i.e. if I move my mouse around 8 inches very slowly i will do a full 360 degree turn in game. IF I move my mouse the same 8 inches as fast as I can I turn about 10 degrees in-game. Not helpful when trying to aim quickly in firefights ;)

Editing either the mouse smoothing or mouse dampening properties I found in the same INI file causes the game to crash at startup.

Yeah, I tried editing the file; it still is WAY to crazy.

Please BioWare, have an option to disable ALL mouse acceleration and this should fix all the problems! Also, a sensitivity number in-game would be nice as well.

I haven't received my copy yet, but I've seen this issue being reported on the steam forums as well.

Jesse, we can't change bEnableMouseSmoothing=true to =false without the game crashing on load, and it's likely one of the problems here. Had similar sucky mouse movement and feel in Borderlands and other recent UE3 games until that was disabled.

The game desperately needs some real mouse sensitivity options too. A slider or generic numerical input box. The three settings are great for a standardized console analog stick thing, but so many PC configs have different OS sensitivities, drivers, and DPI settings along with the in game stuff. 3 settings is not even close to being enough. 10 wouldn't be either. We need the full range available starting from 0.1 or maybe even 0.01

I know we can change that with notepad++ without the game crashing unlike most other tweaks, but the game seems to reset the values to default sens. during certain events, though the config will still reflect your changed value and reloading the game will set it back.

The reason why you cant change bEnableMouseSmoothing=true to =false seems to be because bioware likes to use fixed character counts while reading config files. Yay highschool programming.

No really...try changing it to any 4 character amount...it won't crash.

I haven't tested it much but maybe it defaults to false and changing it to anything but true might work. Mines currently set to fals :P

Great tip! Loaded up notepad++ and changed it to false and removed one of the many zeros from doubleclick time right above it and the game loads without crashing. So much better with smoothing disabled. Just like I had Mass Effect 1. Thanks man, until they fix it for real and add more sensitivity choices to the options menu this will have to do.

sigh, bioshock had the same problem. The total disregard for the pc gamer is sad. Priority is consoles since that's where they get the $$$ but at least show some respect for people who buy the pc game and give us the standard required input settings any proper pc game has.... it is so painfully obvious that mouse accel toggle and fine sensitivity settings are a MUST. It's like getting rid of reverse y axis. total sacrilege..

there's also no toggle for walk. ME1 had a walk toggle option. I posted this already here in another threath. i'ts dissapointing to see a game I love so much not recieving the same attention as the console version. Looks like they just ported it over.
