At first i get Melee defense, but later think that +max health is better because it protects against all kinds of damage

I haven't done the math but generally I pick defense over hp always, better to take no/less damage then being able to get wounded more, especially considering there is no way to heal except for a handfull of potions. lower hp = bigger % of hp healed which leads me to conclude defense is superior. However since armor is precent on most items I feel like ranged or spell defense is also superior to melee defense, but try to mix and match.

Defense is definitely superior cause it affects effective total guard as well as increasing effectiveness of any healing.

Get defense, but Con gives both if you don't have the slots for defense.

Con/HP ist also good because guard is capped at 25% life. All guard enhancing buffs or equipment pieces seems to have no effect.

My Cassandra has with her 200HP belt 1204HP = 301 guard. The full guard drops with +30 max guard belt to 251 guard, which is identical to 25% her new 1004HP. Normaly it should be 281 guard with the belt. The +25% guard passive from vanguard tree has also no effect. Its 25% of max HP with or without the talent.

I checked the current amount of guard in the character statistics and I hope the displayed value is correct.

So going HP has an bonus to your max guard amount if you consider this max guard = 25% of your max HP. My crafted gear is always max HP from metal, ranged defense from leather and magic defense from cloth. I tried to raise magic and ranged defense because melee defense was never an issue. Cassandra stays at 50-60% armor cap unbuffed and buffed at 100%.
