I am dead set on playing a Female Qunari Knight Enchanter.

I intend to bring at least 1 warrior and at least 1 rogue.

So possible party layouts include

2 mages, 1 rogue and 1 warrior

1 mage, 2 rogues and 1 warrior

1 mage, 1 rogue, and 2 warriors

I want to access everywhere in the game. So what are the best companions for each of the 3 layouts?

It doesn't matter. Depends on your playstyle and preference.

Myself, I play nightmare and I like to bring two mages since I don't have any use for another rogue or warrior. 1 Rift Mage and one either without specialization or Knight Enchanter.

if you play on nightmare and dont want to babysit your party members and its terrible AI I'd go with blackwall cassandra and iron bull all either shield tank spec or two hander tank spec, get them geared with guard boosting stuff and talents. (if you play with ff dont use two handers or charging bull)

if you play nightmare and dont want to "cheese" with a cookie cutter inefficient build" and dont mind the minimal team combat management 1 mage (you) one warrior tank (sword and board, blackwall works best due to guardian spec) and then you can choose last two party members and alternate:

-a two hander dps warrior (iron bull but do mind the reaver abilities, ai is horrid) with cole (assassin archer dps is HUGE)

-2 archers (cole + sera or varic, just upgrade bianca)

-cole archer and a partysitter mage spirit -frost (solas works best cuz rift mage gives powerful control and debuffs)

for dragons things change depending on dragon tho, but has night enchanter with good gear and the proper spec you can solo them.

as for your own spec, fire is the highest damage you can get from mage (and prly the highest of all not sure if rift  mage or necro do more) with the spirit-knight enchanter basic support-tank build.

How about this?

2M, 1R, 1W Combo:

Player Character: Qunari Knight Enchanter, who has spirit and Knight Enchanter trees maxed out.

Warrior Slot: Cassandra for her tanking and Templar abilities, because those mages can ruin your day.

Rogue Slot: Varric because he's awesome!

Mage Slot: Solas for dps and a second mage to cast those useful barriers.

Warrior Slot: Iron Bull for a DPS warrior build

Rogue Slot: Varric because he's awesome! Though perhaps I'll consider Sera because of her Tempest abilities.

looks solid but keep in mind that without a main dps tree spirit and knight enchanter dont more than support and offtank really, I recommend fire mine and immolate and "chaotic something" that boost fire dmg from your barrier (huge dps) if you dont have the talent points yet focus on immolate and get something like chain lightning (if you dont use ff)

What is the game's level cap?

This would help with planning builds...

The game doesn't have a hard cap.  I finished almost everything there is to do and got to level 26.  I think I was inquisitor level 18.  All I had left were some War room missions I decided not to follow up on.  Keep in mind that you can get more than 26 ability points from an Inquisitor perk, Amulet's of power, and if you play as a human.

You are gonna have to bring a rogue and a mage if you want access to all areas of the game as specified by OP, so you can take at most two warriors.

Thanks guys. I'll plan for level 20 then.

I will definitely reach level 20.

Goodness. This means I won't be able to max out Spirit and Knight Enchanter as planned.

Okay. I'll have to re think my build...

Sincerely I don't understand why you want to go the Spirit route with a KE (apart for roleplay reasons). With Fade Shield you surely don't need the Barrier increasing skills (FS is as much powerful as you want without needing anything else) and the other skills are not as much useful as to a normal mage.

A damaging tree/skills mix is a much better choice especially because KE has very good synergies with both Fire and Storm tree, or you can either pick and choose from the various damaging/utility skills in the three elemental lines. All of these options are infinitely better than a pure Spirit tree choice for a KE (apart again if you don't want to go for Spirit for rp reasons; in this case naturally stick to it).

for me I'd take:

1x archer.

1x necromage

1x two hander

at the end of the day you're the tank and a two handed warrior will be dishing out a lot of pain for you. keep that big fire trap ready for when the two hander steals agro.

necromage i'd have spec'd for debuffs and barrier mainly and use them to keep the archer alive who will put out all the damage.

this way you should keep your crew alive quite well. with K/E you can pretty much bring anything, but the way i see it this way your AI needs less micromanagement and still has survivability.

you really need a mage to be able to grab enemies attention as they head for the rogues. as i've had enemies fully ignore my taunts. but almost none ignore 3000 points of fire damage from a single spell.

Man I'm glad there are respec options.

Because the likelihood of maxing out any skill tree is very low, I think the better option is to pick and choose the best spells from each tree.

That way I create a diverse Knight Enchanter who can fill many roles.
