As soon as Cassandra said this, I stopped. For a second, I thought the 'free mages' have been murdering and killing the Tranquil, purposely, to create those totems that pinpoint shards. But upon reading the codex, it seems it was done by Venatori agents. But...wouldn't the Redcliffe mages have noticed the fact most of the Tranquil they did bother to take with them were going missing? Or was this something intentionally done with their knowledge? Any information on this? Kind of surprised and dishearted that I may have looked through poor Owain's skull to find a shard now.

They knew the tranquil had been taken but couldnt say/do anything. Plus they got left behind anyway

I thought that Ocularums are some old crap considering that Lost Temple you find.

As much as I keep wanting to properly ally with the mages, they make conscripting make more an more sense the more I learn of their incompetence.

Nice spoilers in topic title

Eh, was debating whether it would really be considered much of a spoiler when making the thread. It's a fairly minor discovery you only seem to find out if you pick a lock in an out of the way place in Redcliffe, and is otherwise never mentioned in the game by the looks of it. It's only in that hut you even discover that Ocularum are a 'new' addition to southern Thedas - I thought they'd been implied to be there all along, not where the Tranquil have mostly gone during the Mage-Templar war. Considering we've got threads with the name of the Elder One and certain decisions involving the succession of the next Divine, figured it wouldn't really matter at any rate. Sorry I spoiled it for you though - will change title when I figure out how.

I was totally creeped out when I came across that.

It now heebie-jeebies me to look for shards.

Because before that knowledge I could think, "It's just some old skull'....now I think "OMG the person this skull belonged to was killed ON PURPOSE to create this artifact."

Welp, I was not expecting that. Just more shock that I need to add to my current state of shock after finishing my 1st playthrough!

To make them you need to find a shard, have a demon touch the tranquil and then chop their head off

Don't worry! They are grass-fed, organic Tranquil! Ha, yeah, that was a trip to find out about halfway through the great shard hunt.

Your creature researcher in Haven says that most of the Tranquils were left behind in most circles when the rebellion happened. Cassandra rescued her and the tranquil she was protecting.

There is a lots of creepy stuff about Tranquils in DAI. From Cassandra's personal quest to some of Cole banter and those skulls.

If Calpernia or another ex-ventatori is in DA4 will we be able address the tranquil murders or will there continue to be a really uncomfortable silence on this issue like in DAI?

Maybe the Tranquils were already dead when the skull was removed from the body?

Besides, the Astrarium are an old Tevinter device. The skulls are not recent. They must be thousands of years old.

I think the codex said they were killed for the purpose of erecting the oculara. But I can't remember for sure.

Also, astrariums (astraria?) are not oculara. Oculara are new.

The shards are thousands of years old. The oculara are new. Likely devised as a way to find said shards. If the venatori built the shards and hid them, and then the oculara to find them... well that's just crazy.

Yeah they're old, i.e. pre-war. Most throughout they were simply totems and never really bothered investigating.

Not just Tranquil. Tranquil who are being force-possessed by demons, which means for that brief instant before they're killed their emotions are fully restored + extra. I really think it's one of the worst things DA has done so far.

If you have Cas, Viv, or Cole with you in Redcliffe you get a quick dialogue when you find the stash of oculara. Cole vows to find whoever did it and to stop them. Guess he forgot to keep that vow.

Here's the codex letter on the oculara:

Alexius was quite clear in his orders. We must scour the countryside to find more of the shards. Without them, the Venatori cannot claim the treasure our master seeks. For that, we need the oculara. Without them, the shards are nearly impossible to find, even if they are no longer cloaked by whatever magic hid them for all these centuries.

There must be more Tranquil in the area — the rebels abandoned most of them when they fled their Circles. Remember, the skull will only attune properly if the Tranquil is in close proximity to one of the shards when the demon is forced to possess him. Even then, the blow must be delivered immediately. The oculara produced from Tranquil killed even minutes later failed to illuminate the shards when used.

I trust you to continue your efforts in this matter. Our master expects success.

People defend Solas.

Both see those they wish to kill and don't see people. They are "Tranquil" or it is a "world of Tranquil."

Tranquil = no longer a person to some people.
