What is killing you exactly, the dragonlings or the Dragon? Is the Dragon perched on one of the side overhangs? The specialization trees will open up as you advance your companions dialogue. Just be sure to communicate to all of them on a regular basis and they will open up operations for you.

What class are you playing as? I've beaten it twice, both times with the party set up of one mage, one rouge and two warriors. Try having Viv and Solas focus fire on the smaller ones with Ice spells while Cass tanks and draws agro. Make sur eyou take out all the small dragons before moving on to the Frostback. Also never forget how amazing grenades can be, be it Bee's, tar etc.

Dragon lungs are the hardest part of this fight.
Honestly, when I fought the thing my party died other than Cass who just kept spamming War Cry and Challenge over and over and nothing could really kill her. She tried reviving things but I couldn't keep anyone else upright in the face of all the problems so I gave up and just slowly ate away at her front right leg -- BTW weren't you supposed to be able to cripple these things IIRC from the demo? If so, her right front leg consisted of about 90% of her total health because she did fall down but then got right back up and only fell down with a tiny sliver of health left b

First are off, are you at least near lvl 12. If not, I would just wait. I found it when i was originally doing the hinterlands, ran in and got waxed. But I saw its level. So I came back when I was 12(rogue assassin) and my party was 11(cass, Solus, Vivienne). Solos kept getting beat up during the fight by the whelps, and used most of potions, but the rest of us were fine. I hung out near its back leg tearing it up, and evaded when he gave me that big tell that hes going to kick me. Solus blew up the whelps with AOE, and Vivienne is damn near immortal once you unlock Knight enchanter. Got him on the first try on hard. The worst part is when he goes flying around like Rathalos dropping bombs on us. I would send the party to hide, but sometimes it wasnt feasible, and getting the half retarded AI to dodge fire isnt easy.
Also, make sure and equip the healing grenades, as well as the regen pots. Use regen at about half half, and the healing gernades should be given to the tank to heal itself and any other melee characters.
You will unlock your specialization after skyhold. Once I left for the first time, everyone's unlocked. (i think I had to manually bring each person out into the field) Your own specializations are unlocked through an operation on the warmap. Its kinda a pain to unlock.

I'm trying to get the fire resistance tonic but I haven't even unlocked tonics period. Let alone the third slot for potions.

I am almost level 12. So when I get to skyhold ill get the fifth? Or after? Right now, I'm just doing side missions. Haven't touched the your heart shall burn quest yet until I clear the storm coast. Hinterlands and what not is clear. Just need to exterminate the wyrm. I'm utilizing the rouge. Duel blades. I might just skip the dragons for now.

Just get some more levels and better gear. When the dragon goes up on the perch, just hang out right underneath it. It helps having good aoe spells like whirlwind if you have a 2h warrior in your party, or blizzard if you have a mage. I killed it around lvl 16 or so, was much easier then. Don't even think I had hardly any fire resist.
When I get this a holes life to halfway, he/she sends out the dragonlings and everything falls apart there. What's the best way to go about this? Right now I am searching for some fire resistance tonic in Val. Also, how the hell do you get the fifth perk tree for all of the characters?
The 5th one, if you mean specializations, shows up after you get to skyhold, or around there.
All in all though, unless you're playing on harder difficulties, you shouldn't need much fire resist, just proper positioning.

I took that dragon on at level 18 with two mages armed with cold staves. It was actually a lot easier than the one at the Western approach because it's not always on the same ground as you.

I took it on at level 12, myself (Archer), Iron bull (2H), Solas (support + Ice) and Blackwall (Tank)
Not a single one of us kicked the bucket, as long as we kept moving when he was in the air, and use the tac mode to move the range characters towards his back but out of claw range to protect them from the swiping, the tank should draw aggro whilst iron bull whirls him to death, when he lands, get under the ledge he is on to protect yourself from him and focus on the littlins. He should go down with out much problem, vinsommer was my biggest problem so far with there being only lightning resistance on cloth gear.. but a level 17 cass and iron bull managed to take him out, was a long fight, but they got him with bout 3 potions left. There was a lot of combat rolling from iron bull XD
