I so enjoy picking flowers, mining for ore and collecting shards from the far side of the moon.

It does so much to advance the story line.

NOT!

I'm thinking of building a fortress out of spindleweed.

Eh, I like it. I'm a hoarder so I stop to pick up everything and search every nook and cranny. I wish there were more treasure chests tucked away in secret corner to reward players who poke around... But that's a nitpicky thing. There are enough to satisfy me. :)

My stained fingers would agree and one reason to get the alchemy perk and mining perk, but the alchemy perk is so unreliable that its help is often marginal.  Too often I had to leave battle, go to camp and heal then look for flowers and then resupply potions.  Having to select every character independently during a resupply is also a time sink.

No it doesn't, so it's your choice if want to grab those things or not

Also picking up crap is something basic in RPGs. The Witcher games has it, DA:O had it. If you are bothered by this maybe RPGs aren't for you.

And some of us have no problem with it.   We don't want everything handed to us in games.  Perhaps you should go find yourself a nice shooter.

Do those games have loot/pick up animations as well?

Really? Not wanting to pick weeds means you want a shooter? I'd love to see the mental map that connects those two points.

The good news for people not thrilled by clicking a button on a particular part of the screen (depth!!!!!) is that thus far crafting seems to be mostly useless overall. I've had more luck looting than anything I've been able to make otrher than some upgrades.

It isn't "basic". That is silly. You could make a perfectly good RPG without those element as they don't build character. There was no weed picking I can recall in Fallout or Wasteland or any of the Gold Box games or Torment. If it is so intrinsic those games missed out.

I'll argue that while it's not forced, it's highly encouraged especially by the randomness of loot. Without crafting, the characters don't get regular upgrades. Also, let's not forget about potions and requisitions. They require a certain amount of ingredients.

It's hard for you to see because you enjoy gathering ingredients. But for people that feel differently and stop picking up flowers, they are going to have a hard time collecting enough for the most basic kinds of crafting.

Maybe you are missing on some schematics. So far I have been able to outfit my entire main party (Inquisitor, Cassandra, Cole, Dorian, and Iron Bull which I swap for Cass sometimes) with mostly crafted gear, mainly armor. I have to admit that I haven't found really good weapons schematics, but that's just me. I have made a pretty decent bow for my rogue Inquisitor.

The item picking system might be a bit annoying at times, but I haven't had problems with it. The thing that bothers me the most is the location of some of the shards, but I have been able to pick up almost every single one from all the areas that I have been (Hinterlands, Storm Coast, Oasis, and almost finished with the Exalted Plains and Western Approach). And the flower picking thing is entirely optional, you can craft everything you need by just picking up a few of them and getting the resources operations done every now and then.

It is optional isn't an answer because it isn't. There are quests for you to finish, you need better material and equipment that come from Astrarium, Shard vaults and such. These are a means to an end. Hell frankly if most of us weren't a touch OCD we'd not be playing these games so just the fact that it exists is often enough to compell completion.

I'd gladly trade being able to "earn" shards in MP instead of picking them up but of course people would have kittens - even thought that would be just as optional.

Might be missing schematics then. I've found few and the merchants selling them don't have all that much that is that great from what I've gotten.  I crafted up a hat for me and some armor for Varric but at this point none of my schematics offers me more than the armor on my back.

I have to admit that I do not enjoy picking up stuff as much as I did in the past. Also, some of the schematics seem to require an awful lot of stuff and then there is the matter of animals not dropping any hide... Anyway, I hope there is a decent savegame editor around by the time I start the second playthrough.

You can buy Tier 1 herbs from merchants in the Crossroads, and in the Crestwood Keep so you don't have to pick them. It would be nice if there was a key to collect all like in DA II. I'll never understand why that was taken away, can't be that hard to code it so you press F again and collect your loot.

I'll never run out of herbs or ore because I'm OCD about picking up every one I see.

I did maybe a 90-95% complete playthrough and I can tell you it's pointless to grab everything in the game. Will stick to rare herbs and ore next time and pick up whatever is needed for requisitions. The rest I'll buy off a vendor.

I agree, the farming in this game is probably the only reason why I'm so reluctant to start a new playthrough. It's like the Fade from DAO excpet it's endless and lasts the entire game. No thanks. We need some mods or console commands to give us all the resources we want. I love crafting but the farming is ridiculous.

As time goes by, I'm putting blinders on to avoid seeing some things. But it is nice that when I get requisitions, I can fill them immediately in a lot of cases and keep getting more influence points for doing it.  :)

I only picked enough common stuff for what I needed, once I had a decent amount I only picked up the less common stuff, however, I still found it far too repetitive and boring game play, you didn't need this stuff in this kind of volume in the previous games.

I enjoy harvesting/farming for stuff to craft and research but the DAI amounts were in the realm of MMO type of time-wasting levels.  MMOs throw this kind of stuff at you to slow down your progress, even in SWTOR Bioware allowed you to send off companions to do a lot of the menial work for you.  Would have been better allowing us to send off those layabouts back at camp to go do some mindless resource gathering.

Also, I think the search function should loot all dropped items within the search range rather than have to walk over and stand on top of every loot bag.  I just can't be bothered looting road kill mobs any longer the process is so tedious and those types of mobs rarely drop anything of note.

I think in general the story is too slow-paced, unless you skipped a lot of stuff and just stuck to the core story and only ventured off it if you were too low a level.

I wish that was my case. You are one of the lucky ones. Here I have had no luck getting ANY loot higher then level 12 and when i was level 12 i couldn't get nothing higher then 8 and now im level 22 and i Finaly got a 2 handed purple for level 17. So I have had to Craft Everything.......... Yes Everything cause of the Lame ass Loot drops, Killed every dragon when i was level 17-21 and i get stuck with Level 10 Loot to level 13 loot................... Yea so crafting has not been useless, the loot has been for me. Like I said you are the lucky one not having to craft anything lol.

Cheers to you mate.

I love looting, but you have to admit that looting in DAI is clumsy.

To answer the "why don't you get a nice shooter" zinger, looting in Borderlands games is quick and easy - you don't even have to stop to pick up gold, and looting items is generous and fast. In DAI, you have to be RIGHT ON TOP of the item in question (so many times I'm standing there going "I can see the circle, why aren't you opening? Fine I'll stand on top of the round chest then"), the looting prompt takes a while to load (and sometimes crashes my game!) and it all interrupts the flow of exploring.

Crafting is great when you have the right schematics and materials, but DAI doesn't make the process endearing even for those of us who like it.

OMG please, Please sir, do not ever brig up the Starting Fade in DAO. Please I beg you.. Never again.....

lets be honest the inquisitor leads a multinational army yet he has to pick flowers for his potions its retarded especially if you are a alchemy heavy character you will spend more hours finding weeds to make potions than literally anything else in the game
