This one area I updated, is a large city.

I added detail to the outskirts so players know where they are going to when they head towards the road/transition.

When baking, it bakes 333 "tiles" (phase 3 on the baking thing, the longest bit. Not 100% what that process is really called, I afk whenever i bake something >_<)

After baking, the area is as normal. The trees move etc and all the animations..

I added 4 barrels in a corner, because the outskirts is terrain, so you can't see if it's baked or not, only ingame. So the barrels are for testing to see if it's baked or not.

So I save, then close the area, saving it again, then I reopen it, and it's this;

Pretty much meaning it's no longer baked..

Do I have to wait longer for the area to finish baking, even after the verify box comes up?

Assuming it's not an oversight of some type, perhaps the area is hosed up? I'm not clear why waiting longer for a bake would matter; it takes as long as it takes.

Maybe :/

There was originally some blockage on the road (baking issue), so I fixed that and it worked fine.

So I then added detail around the outskirt (where it's non walkable), and now it doesn't want to bake.

Edit;

This has happened with my 2nd largest area too.

The problem was;

1) It wouldn't bake properly, i.e, new features (terrain/water/grass) didn't appear.

2) Baking would stop at around 200/300 process, so even when I could move around on my screen, it still hasn't finished (very odd).

I finally realised I had to not touch it till a good amount of time, and it worked.

By any chance are you using autosave? Otherwise, I don't know why waiting a while would matter.

I'm not using autosave :P Turned that off along time ago.

What's the largest area you've baked?

Maximum possible, 32x32, and it went as expected till phase 7.

The only reason for the barrels not to be surrounded by a white line would be to have set them as environmental objects (and not placeables), but obviously that's not the case here as I understand the white line appears after baking, and is gone when you reopen the area.

One question though:

I save, then close the area, saving it again, then I reopen it

What happens if you do not save the area when you close it? (after all, the baking process already saved it).

are the barrels in the above pics in the playable area or in the 2 meta tile area outside it?

I've baked 32x32 areas without issue. One thing is that too many placeables too close together creates baking problems. Try making those barrels environmental and using a walkmesh cutter.

It does the same. I've tried not saving it, saving it once, or saving it more than twice lol, still happens.

They're in a playable area. I only put them in the corner to see if they baked. If it worked, I'm happy with the barrels being there.

It's not really the barrels problem, I'll grab a pic what I want to be baked.

This is what I want baked.

The barrels are there to see if it bakes on the playable area, via, the white lines around the barrels (just like anything else) indicates it's baked.

In game, the ground is just flat land with no grass/textures, with the floating buildings (because the terrain isnt baked).

So I head over to the barrels, and I can run through them.

So once again, the barrels are just for testing :P

Whenever things like this happen to me, I check whether there are any temporary files left behind from when the toolset has crashed.

Try checking under c:\users\[login]\AppData\Local\Temp while the toolset isn't running. If you see any files that look like NWN2 area files, then delete them. You could probably get rid of them by running a disk cleanup as well.

Would anyone be willing to download the .erf of the area and try to bake it themselves?

I've done everything suggested so far >_<

I had a go and my computer bakes really fast but yours took quite a few minutes, you've got 333 placeables with walkmeshes if I was you I'd get busy with the environmental objects and walkmesh cutter as they can't all be important objects or in a line of sight for a fight. Even walls can be environmental just go around them.

My bake stayed looking like yours then my toolset threw a fit and seized up when I tried to open the terrain tab so I closed it down with the task manager. Are you sure you didn't go around all that area you want baked and made it unwalkable with the terrain editor ?

edit.. I had another go but selected all your placeables at once and turned them environmental there are way over 1000 in that area and a lot are outside the walkable area so you're overloading your computer's brain with all that lot and asking for trouble. That area still didn't bake because I think you need it to become walkable first so give it a going over with the brush and see what happens but do yourself a favour and wipe out all unnecessary placeables.

ps.. With buildings you'll have to add doors because they'll get wiped in the process.

What do you mean?

I meant, are you using any non-stock placeables that would require hak files for properly testing the area?

I imported this and baked it. Having 16 gigs of ram probably helps.

You have waaaaay too many placeables. For example:

https://dl.dropboxus...79894/bake1.jpg

Those are all placeables, even the ones no one is ever going to see.

https://dl.dropboxus...79894/bake2.jpg

Here's the area statistics, over 1200 placeables.

https://dl.dropboxus...9894/bake2b.jpg

Load times and performance for that area is going to be very bad. It's probably why you can't bake it, your pc probably is choking trying to deal with figuring out the walkmesh because of the number of placeables. Too many placeables close together causes issues.

For comparison, here are two city wards in Crimmor, they have hundreds more objects, but only a quarter of the placeables.

Crimmor, Alandor Gate Ward

All the objects outside the walkmesh should be environmental, all the low walls, banners on walls etc. The walkmesh cutter is your friend.

I understand :P

The area was created around 3 years ago, It was my first "major" city, and at the time I was quite new to Nwn2's toolset too.

I'll do all of the suggested, and thank's a lot for all who tested :P

Just an update, it's baking fine now.

I reduced it from 333 ish, to 209.

That was just to test but there's a lot more stuff I can just use a walkmesh for, such as the walls :P

Glad to know what the environmental objects mean, I never bothered to look into that when I started using the toolset.

Ty for the help again.
