I'm posting this here because, for whatever reason, I can only post in the scuttlebutt areas. So feel free to move this to an appropriate area or, better yet, fix my account please.

-------

You can prevent demons from spawning between waves by attacking their spawn beams.

To clarify, you walk up to a rift and the first wave of demons are sitting there waiting for you, right? So you kill them and then the rift does it's fancy shell thing with beams coming out at various points on the ground. Those beams are where the next wave will spawn. Well, if you attack the point where the beam hits the ground you "sever" the beam preventing that particular demon from spawning.

If you're quick about it you can have multiple members of your party attack multiple beams reducing the number of demons that spawn in the next wave significantly. It's especially helpful at higher difficulties.

Hope this helps someone out there.

Dispel and Spell purge do the job.

What?  Are you serious?  I had no idea you could tell party members to attack those beams.  This is huge news for me.

So Quaddis, are you saying that if you have a mage with Dispel, this works also?  Can you hit more than one with a single attack?

Dispel and Spell purge do the job.

That is super interesting. Gonna try that tonight.

Yeah...my Mage with dispel and Cassandra with Spell Purge made rifts a child's play. Tough sometimes Pride Demons spawned, i am not sure is it cause they are immune or i missed the spot.

And yes...you can hit multiple "beams" if spawn points are close to each other.

Thanks for posting that info.  I can't believe I've been trying to play on Nightmare without ever trying to get rid of the beams.  The window for hitting them must be pretty short, but still, even getting rid of a couple of the baddies would be a huge edge.

I knew the dispel took care of them because it is in the description but I had no idea you could actually attack the beams. Thanks!

It is couple of seconds, 2 maybe 3. Disable Cassandras Spell Purge in her behaviors so she does not use it when you do not want too, same thing with dispel if you are not controlling mage. First few times when i need them abilities were on cooldown.

Good tips.  I'll make sure to keep the party close to the little "rift orb" as well, so they're within striking range when the beams come down.  This is AWESOME news.

mostly you can hit only one spawn because of the distance between them, but sometimes you get two at once

Nice one. I knew about Dispel but had no idea about the beams.

Just in case that someone misunderstood, i know only that you can only use Dispel and Spell Purge on spawn points where beams touch the ground.
I have never tried to attack beams.

So if you had two mages with Dispel, each one of them could target a spawn point using the Tac Cam.  Is that how it works?

Dispel or Spell Purge in the lapse before the Fade Rift becomes solid (i.e. before you can disrupt it).

To add to how great Dispel is, there's a passive in the Fire tree called Flashpoint.  Whenever your mage gets a critical hit, the next spell the cast doesn't trigger a cooldown.  If you go into the second phase of a rift with Flashpoint active (e.g., your mage got a crit killing the first wave and hasn't cast another spell yet), you can fire off two Dispels before they spawn.

Where is the fun in preventing the demons from spawning? It is like avoiding the dragons.

Hmm, and here my rogue is standing around gormlessly waiting for the demons to spawn. So, you can't physically(or ranged-wise) attack the rift beams then? Only spell purge and dispel work? Hmm, it's worth a try, any vids of this in action?

The OP says you can physically attack the beams as well.  It requires a bit of luck or a lot of planning, to have your warrior or rogue in striking range, but he said it does work if you can strike within that 2-3 second window.

I don't mind a challenge, but when the game rolls 4 rage demons and 2 despair demons, along with a sprinkling of wraiths, it's a little much for my skill set.
