Was anyone else hoping for a nice Orlesian-style attire for the ball?  My female Inquisitor looked very...manly in the formal attire. Yuck! I would've really preferred a ballgown.

I liked it on my manquisitor. It matched my mustache quite well and made me feel like a russian tsar.

If only I could wear that uniform when I judge people instead of that bland, grey pyjamas.

It did bum me out a bit, but I took some comfort in the fact that Josie and Leliana were wearing the same thing, at least.

I was happy with what i got, im leader of a military organization representing it at a event with the most powerful ppl in the nation of Orlais an on top of that there to stop a assassination attempt, a big "fluffy" dress would not have suited the purpose

We had a sub goal that affected th outcome and that was court approval. The court would approve of being over the top, flashy, and fabulous. We change into armor for the combat/sneaky parts so there was no reason for our formal outfit to be frumpy and practical.

I'm not dreading it, I'm dreading redoing it all over again knowing I have to match my whole flippen squadron there. They cheeped out on making the Inquisitor feel like He/She is actually a Powerful Person. Judging people with that pot belly in the mis match lame I'm to drunk to know how to dress better then my Militia Commander who looks bad ass with the Fur Coat armor.

At least give us better attire as Mass Effect had with formal wear. Is that so hard? *Face palm Sandwiches*

Oh, Bioware. You have made me so infinitely happy with Inquisition, but then something like the lame primary-colors-vomited-all-over-me bathrobe happens when I was promised a fabulous Orlesian gown that I was excited about for days...

Did the coffers take a huge spontaneous hit I didn't know about? Or does Josephine just hate me? Whatever happened to image and PR and such? We're not even wearing those sexy Inquisition colors for what damn reason?

The textures in this game can be so beautiful. So silky and fantastic. Everything looks ridiculously ornate and beautiful on Vivienne. Why, WHY did you deprive me of my one single chance to feel fabulously female in a game where every cutscene makes my inquisitors look tomboyish in stance and bearing?

I wanted to see my LIs' jaws' drop. I wanted to squee. Instead I got a big ol' dose of girliness-heartbreak. It would've been so easy--just copy what you did for Vivienne! She looks so fantastic that I'm constantly jealous. I mean, I played a mage partially because I was hoping to wear some prettier stuff than my rogues and warriors will get to. It's rather painful that I can't.

Is anybody modding this yet?

It was very disappointing to see all my female companions dress so manly (even Vivienne which was hilarious considering her combat armour was more elegant and formal) I understand why Cassandra would up for that but for the others it makes zero narrative sense other than they didn't have time to make a female formal attire. It's not a big issue to me as I always play males but is rather immersion breaking in my opinion (at least npcs comment on why is Cass wearing such attire).

I would have loved if there had been a choice before the ball - "Something practical." or "Something frilly and fancy. Dress to impress!" Otherwise, if they just went with a dress and you didn't have a choice wearing it or not, there would also have been backlash - "My Inquisitor would never have been seen in a dress like that!" However, that would have taken a lot of resources and some scenes could have been problematic to do with a dress. (I'm thinking about one scene in particular.)
Like Caladin says, we're there to represent the Inquisition so I can see why they went with snappy, practical uniforms.

But... If there was an option for a big frilly impractical dress, I'd take it.

This, so much this! I actually didn't mind the pyjamas, but once I saw my formal attire I was like "Why don't I get to choose what to wear in Skyhold, when we have multiple types of "regular" clothing?" :'(

SMH at how this videogame is more progressive than the world where people want to dress their Inquisitors in pretty dresses. :(

This is literally one of a handful of games (Triple A or otherwise) that gives women characters "manly" attire (whatever people really mean when they say this), and you want to turn it into literally every game out there :(. Mass Effect 3 gave you a dress for a party, well what if I don't want to wear a dress. :(

Let Bioware unsully treatmeant of women (and trans/gay/PoC) in videogames on its own if it must.

Agreed, it really made me laugh when I saw the beautiful gown Morrigan was wearing and I was stuck in a dumpy military uniform - with all the other companions  :( .

It was adequate for my male..  But then you have the single outfit worn in Skyhold that doesnt look regal or commanding at all.  May as well be beige paste with gold buttons.

Its all well and good if some people like the unisex outfits.  Clearly, they have them now in the game.  Frankly, I think they look ridiculous for the setting in which they are presented... An Orleasian ball, and judging prisoners.

Some of us want clothing that expresses what our characters desire, and their personality.  Elements that exude femininity, masculinity, power, authority; perhaps even piety such as if you use the Andrastian throne.

Its a party.. In Orlais...  Get into it.  You're literally trying to be the belle of the ball to sway opinions and uncover plots.

I think people could be satisfied if both sexes had 2 outfits for ball, and 3 outfits for Skyhold.  This would even make the Inquis's chamber relevant and useful, as you could change there.

@Gundar3;

I think my Inquisitor looks plenty feminine with any outfit. She is literally a women though.

We could talk about whether or not a character who's meant to be a Holy Figure/Politician/Tactician/Soldier/Lover/Friend would look respectable in a pretty dress (given the general tone of the game and the combat outfits, it would probably look incongruous.)

See, videogames typically never give you a choice of de-sexualizing female characters, even progressive games tend to make some sort of pained concession to jusitfy a character who is not a man (we'll give her pretty hair and tank-top, etc).

So IMO, the fact that people need to dress up their characters respectably and deal with it is a welcome change. Screw high-heels and dresses, I'll say.

I can absolutely understand the reasoning for the uniform. You were present as Inquisitor, and you represented your organization. Like 80 % of my inquisitors would feel immensly awkward in some fancy ballgown / suit anyway.

BUT I can not understand the choice for that fugly outfit. ESPECIALLY since it in no way reflects the overall design and stylistic approach to the Inquisition itself.
I would have vastly prefered something more elegant, some sort of suit in the colours of the Inquisiton (the black / white / silver / red ), maybe even with the Inquisiton - crest somewhere. Besides, ANYBODY looks imposing, elegant and good in black.

Also I think it REALLY looks out of place in the DA:I universe. When I look at the outfit, it reminds me more of modern day guards or admirals in formal attire, but NOT of the medevial setting of the game.

@ButchHardPec:

See...  I dont agree with the idea that women are over sexualized.  I dont think men are oversexualized either, and I've heard a great deal of people claim both.

Fashion is a method of displaying an identity.  Things like the color, size, quality, fabric, who made it, and others allow a person to establish themself in a crowd and state who they are affirmatively.  This is certainly true in the hierarchy of class.

If the Herald, male or female, walked into the ball, to see the Empress, and hobnobb with royalty, to represent the Inquisition (an up and coming International military organization) and all it stands for... In the culture of Orlais... I'm frankly surprised they arn't thrown out as a joke.

I dont understand what you mean by respectable.  To be more "respectable" in this setting would imply that the Herald should dress far more ornately than they do.

Are you arguing we shouldnt know the difference between a man or a woman in games?  That doesnt make sense to me at all, both irl and in the game.  In this high fantasy medieval game, both sexes have roles to play.  We are talking about dynasty, lines of sucession, money, and political power.  There are specific roles to play for princes and princesses.  Its how Thedas (society) turns.  So...  I think I disagree.

The point is, I want the options to outshow the competition in the Orlaisian ball, and have more outfits in the keep.

I can picture that conversation:

"Cassandra, get into this ballgown."

"Bite me."

Spoiler: You're gonna do quite a bit of fighting, so an attire that would result in you tripping over a long train could be problematic.

It doesn't have to have a long train lol. As Wynne said, they could have even copied Vivienne's orlesian armor.
