I let Varric keep the lyrium shard more or less to see what happens. I was told he gets possessed during his personal quest. I was also told he'll leave the party if a Hawke he was friends with died. So I leave Hawke behind. Varric doesn't leave. I do Varric's quest. Varric is fine, and his card is pleasant. Was I misinformed, or is the game bugged?

That whole Varric leaves if Hawke dies, was back when people were speculating that Hawke was the one being executed (Blackwall's personal quest), and the quest was actually Varric's, and that he would leave if you refused to act on it. That turned out to be untrue.

The other, is also what I have heard, though I havn't personally actually played far enough into the game to see what would happen. But as I've heard it, Varric were to get corrupted/possesed by the Red Lyrium.

I asked M. Laidlaw about this on twitter actually. He said that the red lyrium won’t have an affect on Varric because he’s too smart for it.

However Varric techinically dies and is revived in the Hushed Whispers quest, when you bring him along and you fastforward a year later. When you go back to the present moment however, he's back to normal though.

I'm confused? I did the primeval red lyrium inner circle quest and his quest later in the game in the Hinterlands Cave and don't remember deciding to give/deny him a shard.

I thought I did everything with all my companions I'm sure I did perhaps I skipped it quickly in conversation or wasn't really listening

The red lyrium shard was from a DAII quest.

Yeah, pretty sure the possession thing was a big ol' rumor.

In DA2 Varric and his brother find an idol made of red lyrium. It drives Bartrand mad and at the end of the quest you can decide to let Varric keep it or destroy it, then a rumor popped up saying that if you let him keep it in DA2 he would go mad too so lots of people rushed to the keep to change their decision. Its not actually in DAI

Oh THAT idol. I thought there was an additional bit in inquisition which I would have found odd given Varric knows how dangerous it is. I didn't give him the Idol in DA2 and let Bertrand live, I think there was a war table operation that put me in contact with an alive and well bertrand but I can't remember.

I'm really curious if there is a way that he does leave the Inquisition. Before the game came out they were going on about how companions can leave if approval is low. There was even a consequences trailer in which when they were talking about this it showed a cut-scene where Varric appeared to be walking away from Inquisitor, Cullen, Leliana and Josie (cass might've been in the scene as well).

Besides a potential divine leaving, a certain someone else leaving post-credits cut-scene and the aforementioned Blackwall has anyone actually seen/heard of a companion leaving the group?

Cassandra apparently can't leave. Solas hates me this play through but has shown no signs of leaving, and I wouldn't be surprised if he or Varric can't leave either, especially because I haven't seen any dialogue where you can tell them to get lost.

Lots of companions give you options to send them away, but not many just straight-up leave.

I have heard of Cole just leaving though. I'm sure others can too, if they hate you enough.
