I am a complete noob. I was just in Lowtown at night after talking to the captain and I have plot markers turned on, but it will not show me where Guardsman Donnic is to be found! I have searched everywhere in lowtown at night, and I defeated 2 different attacks. Is there just something that I haven't completed yet that I need to?

So sorry to here of your problems, unfortunately I havent played the game in years, and I cannot remember that particular quest. The only thing that I think is related is downtown or docks area in some tunnels. Thats about all I can say.. remember that I could be wrong..by the way I am now playing dragon age inquisition. And it rocks.

Do you have Aveline in your party? I think she's required for this quest. The quest goes - Stop the ambush, report to the captain, check the duty roaster and then head to Lowtown. Make sure you checked the roaster (the post with the notes on it).

Finding Donnic: Starting at the market you walk to the Hanged man, turn right, go down the stairs, past the stalls and into the small alley.

More seriously, what Krypplingz said is spot on. There are no prerequisites for this quest, but you do need to complete all the steps.
