So has anyone been able to make a Necromancer build that works well on Nightmare and is effective as, say, Rift Mage ? I have been trying but haven't been very successful with it...

IMO, Necromancy is underwhelming and its only saving grace is Walking Bomb and Spirit Mark, both of which are at the far end of the skill tree, which means you need to have a lot of skill investment to even make them work any decently....

So I am curious to see if anyone has been able to make a decent Necromancer build ? Would love to see what you have come up with...

Tis' rather sad because on paper, Necromancer is powerful but in reality, they are "meh" compared to Rift Mage. Knight Enchanter is not included in the comparison because they are too OP to begin with.

Limited mana mostly hurts Necromancer builds. Untill level 15 or so you will need another mage in your party with Static Cage or Pull of Abyss. Premature explosions are bread and butter for necromancer as you can effectivly have more than one Walking bomb also doing so causes some nice initial damage as well.

Once you reach level 15 you can start being effective without another mage in the party. Though lyrium potions are essential.

Static Cage, Walking Bomb, explode the walking bomb, static cage pull enemies together, fire mine to the middle and just look in awe to the damage numbers. Also Walking Bomb's explosions (if triggered with its normal timing) is a detonator just like stone fist so killing the initial target with a primer always an option.

Spirit mark does wonders sometimes but i find myself not using it most of the time due to mana limitations unreliable mechanics. Though againts dragons, walking bomb with mark does good DoT. By the way walking bomb does hit multiple parts of a dragon if exploded (i need to verify this though)

F**k it, i just return to one of my saves with my rift mage and it's ten times better than necromancer. Plays just as it plays on casual.

wouldn't dare to say if it works for nightmare but its quite similiar to what bhaal has. for my first playthrough my bread and butter was upgraded spirit bomb, the fear effect, upgraded static cage, chain lightning(upgraded but not neccisary) and energy barrage. have party members focus on the one with the bomb (apply bomb to the target with least amount of health) upgraded static cage causes stuff that gets hit in cage to take X amount of more damage. so with spirit bomb exploding/dots ticking on everyone, chain lightning whenever off cd. you'll see a bunch of small numbers flying around. you can also use fear on whatever mob is outside of the cage (in the hope they run in or to keep em busy.).
