I haven't seen any of them yet.

Oriental *is* considered an offensive term. It's like calling someone a ******. Use Asian, or if you wish to be more specific, their nationality (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, etc).

As for your complaint that there are none in ME1, I think you need to look a little harder. There are quite a number of them. Emily Wong is by far the most obvious.

What the heck is Anime-Japan? Anime is neither a country nor a part of a country. It is as ridiculous as saying comicbook-America.

Kaiden is Japanese, Alenko is Australian, a pretty common pairing in the Pacific. Another accent flub a la Anderson of London.

Well, i wouldn't consider London-ese a race :P.
As for the pairing, it just goes to confirm the mono-race thing. (I'm beginning to sound like NubianGOD, someone help me)

Anderson sure looked like he was of African descent if not "black."

Isn't "orientals" an offensive term?
How can OP be that concerned and still use offensive terminology?

Yeah. That said, until a couple of years ago, I still used "Hispanic" and "Oriental", and I'm a radical, so I was quite surprised to realize that I had been using such offensive terms.

i think all the asians were slowly incorporated into the international genome and outcompeted by our much larger western counterparts, but mostly they destroyed themselves with ever-increasing amounts of suicidal gameshows.

There aren't any middle easterners either, except the reporter we punch in the face. I have half a mind to be insulted by this actually. But good for them that it's a good game.

If you listen to the Avenue Q song, "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist," they say that the term "oriental" as an alternative to "Asian" is offensive. That's proof right there, because Avenue Q is amazing.

Anderson looked like he covered both, to me, personally. Also, see Jacob Taylor. and you could definately make your character black.

Hoping that's just a troll post.

No actually it's a serious question, Jacob is the only Black person I've seen in a Mass Effect game.

The one guy's assitant on Noveria that was (SPOILER!!!!!!!)))) Actually a cop was black, The Guy on the presidium was Indian, Who asked you to get his wifes body out of custody....

It would make more sense to have Asians as they will no doubt form the most powerful nations and most populous in the future (India, China, Anime-Japan)

Unless they blew themselves apart in a huge nuclear confrontation... not so far fetched, actually.

Really? cos i remember plenty. Anderson always seemed black with something else tacked on.

Between the huge same-sex movement, and all the whining about other various things the last few days, I think people are pretty much just LOOKING for stuff to whine about.

You really can't call any human in the setting by any modern racial term. You may have noticed that any character you're able to create is of a 'mixed' appearance by today's standards, whilst none of the neolithic extremes are possible. This is very much intentional, as per the fiction outlined since the very first books.

Not that features presently unique to specific groups aren't still visible amongst some individuals. The 'whitest' character is probably the default male Shepard, whilst Emily Wong is the most East Asian that springs to mind.

It's funny how people seem to see the character creator so differently. There was a thread just the other day that said basically "how come I can't make my character not look asian?" Apparently some people think all or most of the eye choices have an asiatic quality. I don't see it, myself. I would think it would make sense if the quick start gave choices that had premade characters which represented each ethnic group and that would cover it. Considering how vast the ME universe and much is done with the different cultures etc, that representing that scope of variety here on earth in the human appearance choices with the character creator would fit right it.

Hispanic isn't offensive. My girlfriend, who is native puerto rican, uses the term all the time, as does her family.

I believe the preferred term for Asians is Mongoloid.

IMO, Oriental is used to describe something from the Orient, not someONE. Since when have you ever heard someone from the west being called Occidental? As others have said, there's a bunch of NPCs in the game already, besides Custom Shep.

I smell a thread lock coming.

I think that most of these terms are only offensive to white middle-class americans who have recently discovered a world atlas.

I find it odd that oriental is considered offensive. I mean im white. I dont care if people call me white. Or anglo saxon. If I was black I wouldnt mind being called black. Of african. If I was asian I wouldnt mind being called asian. or oriental. The Orient is all of the Asian nations. Why not say oriental? It holds no negatives I can see.

That being said I put absolutely no stock in political correctness and actually go out of my way to be non pc. I cant stand political correctness. I guess im just a close minded bigot

True, to an extent. I would still highly advise not dropping the n-bomb unless your buddy is a very, very good friend. Even then, he still might sock you one.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and info.

(to be clear)

I didn't know "Oriental" was an offensive word to those who got offended. I apologize.

I'm from far east where those words are not used in offensive way.

I don't think face reconstruction in ME1 made a playable character an Eastern Asian looking man or woman.

For example, skull structure is still those of western.

You can't dye Japanese girl's hair into blonde and say she's Westerner.

(You know what I'm talking about, right?)

And, finally,

I thought it would be better if there are more options (skin colors as well as races) to choose for romantic involvement.

P.S.

I like smurf and calamari, but still Liara is NOT my type.

Yet it would be contrary to the setting. It is intentional, by design, that regardless of the character one creates, it will appear mixed by today's standards in one way or another. Going through the creator, it is evident that care was taken to avoid 'pure' Asian/African/European/Nordic features, so if anyone tries to create such a character, they'll always be disappointed.
I say take that.

To expect modern delineations after ~180 years of admixture is kind of crazy. Like looking back at 16th Century paintings and wondering why everyone has such 'weird heads.' Genetics: sex magic.
