Hispanic isn't offensive. My girlfriend, who is native puerto rican, uses the term all the time, as does her family.

I think that most of these terms are only offensive to white middle-class americans who have recently discovered a world atlas.

True, to an extent. I would still highly advise not dropping the n-bomb unless your buddy is a very, very good friend. Even then, he still might sock you one.

Especially if he's black. They hate that.

I find it odd that oriental is considered offensive. I mean im white. I dont care if people call me white. Or anglo saxon. If I was black I wouldnt mind being called black. Of african. If I was asian I wouldnt mind being called asian. or oriental. The Orient is all of the Asian nations. Why not say oriental? It holds no negatives I can see.

That being said I put absolutely no stock in political correctness and actually go out of my way to be non pc. I cant stand political correctness. I guess im just a close minded bigot

what he said. im asian, and i dont find the term 'oriental' offensive at all.

It's likely that in the future, mixed marriages would be the norm and people no longer really identify themselves as belonging to just one specific ethnic group.

I don't like it when people call me African. I'm not African. I'm Black(or African American if it makes you nervous. ;O)

Oriental has been used in a negative context quite a bit. It's an 'archaic' term, and we might as well use asian.

There are quite a lot of racial terms that do not mean anything derogatory, yet are considered offensive for socio-historical reasons.

If a lackadaisicalian comes to this country, speaking no English, and takes your job on the first day... you're sh*t at your job. We don't need you! Down with malaisians! Less of that sort of thing!

Oriental is not offensive. it's simply a dated term, like "******"-- also not an offensive term.

"Asian" is a stupid, useless term. I believe the OP is looking for the term "east asian".

Well Id call you black then. Though I dont see why you would say youre not African. Its your homeland. Thats one of the reasons I have no problem being called anglo saxon, or Germanic. I come from Prussia and I am proud of that. I look at its beauty and acomplishments and I am reminded that I am from a wonderful place.

Who went and declared the term "oriental" racist while I wasn't looking? What an absurd suggestion.

You Americans are wierd. It's not offensive here in Britain, and I can't for a second imagine why it would be. It's a geographical descriptor, about as significant as calling someone from England "European".  Seems a shame to declare such an innocent term racist for the sake of it.

This. Probably just due to being a spacefaring people in contact and living with aliens, they probably moreso call themselves human, and at most, identify what planet/colony/major part they're from.

You sure its not offensive? No offense man but from the news I see even saying Islamic or black will land you in jail.

Like the cops who where fired for putting up a add in the paper with a dog in it about adopting dogs. Some Muslim and high class white british people decieded it was offensive to Muslim sensibilities.

Or where the Romanians illegaly broke in and are still living in a families home they built. When the woman reported the crime mentioning they looked Romanian the police officer called her a racist and hung up.

Absolutely.

There's a lot of guff in the papers about it but people are very easy going and there's a big of an anti-PC fightback that keeps things on the level.  Oriental is about as offensive as saying "bog roll" as toilet paper.  Like I said.  It's a geographical descriptor.

I've called plenty of things Islamic and black.  I'm also immensely offensive to religion 99% of the time except when expressedly asked not to be.

The police spend half their time grinning, to be honest.

Yes, because all Asians are Americans... >_>

How about something less ethnocentric... say, "of Asian descent"?

Its a reference to the movie "The Big Lebowski" calm down bro.
