A passive crit bonus and a passive damage bonus for the party on a crappily controlled AI? I like his specialization just fine!

all companions can get/find amulet's of power, usually from their specific war table missions

Is the number that you get for each member random or do they all get the same amount?
Also, does your inquisitor him/her-self get any of the amulets?

For some reason I have 3 for Varric and none for anyone else. Weird.

Does anyone know if it's random? If so, I was also wondering if the chances of getting a amulet of power for the right party member increases when you don't recruit companions you don't play with anyway...

The amulets are fixed rewards and all companions get amulets regardless of whether you use them or not, typically in situations that are associated with them. Varric gets several amulets in the beginning of the game where it makes a big difference, while others, such as Cole, get their medallions in the second half of the game. The inquisitor also gets amulets.
Examples of thematic association amulets:

If you run in and out of Valamar and not take every item out of the vases/chests in the Vault, you can find Varrics Amulet of power, and you can keep running in there for schematics, mats and Amulets of Power.

for the number of amulets, i cant say, though there are plenty of those for your companions
as for the inquisitor, i found one in crestwood in a locked house after the lake is drained. before that, it was barred and someone is inside

I swear, this is like the third free skill point Varric has gotten. Does this just make him the best Rogue companion, or is his specialization still too limiting?
other companions get amultes too...you just have to find them...sometimes in unusual places...but basically
everything templar you might find something for cassandra
everything dragon/monster/glorious battle - bull
everything tevinter - dorian
everything fade/spirit - solas
varrics are just easier to find...but so far i think in my party, cassandra has the most skill points...
