After getting one banter in 15 hours on my last save file, I restarted and made sure to travel to the Hinterlands directly from Haven's War Room instead of backing out and leaving through the gate this time. Still no background music, but I have had two banters fire (one between Varric and Cassandra and one between Cassandra and Solas) after about an hour in the Hinterlands. Still sparse, but those characters were completely silent for me before, so the War Room does seem to be related somehow.

It might not be since you restarted.

Question, are people counting quest banter as banter?

In Crestwood at the moment doing the main quest there... plenty of banter re: the quest at hand, I'm thinking until I've finished the quest then normal casual banter gets put on hold there, can anyone verify?

My banter has been regular-ish, every 20 min or so through my 50 hours so far (approximately... haven't been keeping that close of an eye on it) :)

I think this is part of the "problem" not related to the bug (which I believe does exist) and people testing should be aware of it. Judging from my observations I think every time a character quips something it counts as banter and resets the timer. At least that's what my experiments yesterday showed: I had a lot of banter until I went to the Storm Coast, where I had environmental comments in about the same frequency, but almost no banter.

I think this is a problem because a oneliner ("I like the sea") is wholly different for the playing experience compared to a conversation that spans a couple of lines at least.

Still, if you are testing, please keep this in mind (and do note the region you're in).

This would also mean that you would get MORE banter in regions you have already explored, because the environmental comments are exhausted. Can anyone confirm/refute this? At least my testing shows it might be the case, as I get less banter when I am first starting out in a region. Not zero though - I quested through Emprise du Lion today and had about 3-4 instances of banter, plus environmental comments, all in all something about every 10 minutes, I'd guess. The banter got less frequent the more I explored, but this might just be because the frequency of the combat increased at the same time...

Why I think this is unrelated to the bug: in my PS4 game, I have almost zero banter. When I went to Emprise du Lion in that game, I had zero banter, only Cole would comment on everything, all the time (comment/oneliner like "It sings" and stuff like that, no banter). It got so bad that I stopped bringing Cole along because I'd rather have silence instead of constant nonsense talk. In my PC save, Cole plays nice with the party and has really interesting conversations with everyone.

If banter isn't supposed to recycle, why did I hear Vivienne say the same thing to Cole in the Exalted Plains 3 times?

About how many rifts there are and how it would be so much more convenient for everyone if the demons would just fall through the portal back to the fade.

I don't mind hearing Viv talk even if I've heard it before, but  I was just surprised.

I havent heard any variation in banter. My last 30 hours of play through were really bad. I've had the same two conversations repeated every 15 minutes or so between Cole and Vivi. Stats below.

Static Group consisting of:

Blackwall

Vivienne

Cole

Myself: Female Elvan Mage with british accent.

120 hour play time and finished the game yesterday afternoon.

30 hours of hearing Cole and Vivi with the same two conversations:

Cole telling Vivi that when she casts spells she is casting spirits and she is disgusted and needs a bath.

Vivi telling Cole that with all of the rifts around all of the lost confused Demons should go back through them and Cole replying they cant hear her.

Those 30 hours consisted of doing everything in:

  • Emerald Graves
  • Emprise du Lion
  • Hissing Wastes

After completing those areas I then beat the game. Hope this helps. Reading about other people hearing Cole chat it up in other ways makes me jealous.

We shouldn't have to switch party members out for the banter if we don't want to because of some kind of banter-limit. This seems like a major design oversight. Instead of there being a limit on banter between certain party members you could have at least put it on some kind of algorithmic loop based on it randomly generating dialogue based on whoever is in the group. That way there would not be a limit at all. This seems like an odd thing to do...

This is extremely lazy development. I'm finding a lot of things in this games design extremely laid back and lazy.

Yep, same problem here. There's no music in game at all, except for storyline missions( like in your heart shall burn etc.) In those missions this works great, battle music in battles and ambient music in exploring. I believe there is some sort of script which is not being used when in "open world mode". I am about 80 hours so far and I never heard music in open world exploring. When I appear in camp it starts but after few steps it is fading out. This is right for any location. But banters somehow do work for me regardless that I use same party members all the way. There's not too much of them, but I do hear it sometimes. As for me it ruines all joy in the game and is very serious issue.

I'm really sad seeing the blame being placed on us the player.  I have no location music most of the time, I went to Val Roy once and it started up and was so pretty, I shopped and it was gone.  Same thing once in the Emerald Graves I heard beautiful background music and once I interacted/fought something it was gone.

Banter is minimal too, some chat more than others in certain placed like Crestwood had the most/best banter with Bull, Sera and Dorian.  But I have done so many combos I thought would be awesome in different locations and gotten nothing.

I am Xbox One, Deluxe edition, imported from Keep, Dalish female rouge, 50 hours playthru lots of side quests as well as main story line.

Wait, seriously? You're asking for infinite banter? What sort of godlike algorithm do you have in mind?

After the reddit fix, I am getting fairly regurlar banter and music- not all the time, but within my last 3 hours of play, I had approximately 5 banter. That's more than I had before, so that's good.

Combat music is present occasionally as well, as is background music.

I wonder what the bug is related to: the quests not properly closing, war-table travel, or me updating my audio driver?

Unlikely to be that last since I appear to have it and I'm on PS4. Could be multiple things - since the problem is banter not actually triggering in addition to audio not looping/playing it appears that it's multiple bugs all wound up together.

If things work as intended on dev kits (and I'm not contesting that they do), it could be an issue with the code that actually got shipped rather than the code BioWare's working from. I'm going to uninstall/reinstall when I do my second playthrough just to be sure.

I already did the reinstalling, and I still had the bug. For others, the bug disappeared by doing nothing. So it's a very difficult one to figure out.

Can someone from Bioware/someone smarter than me answer this? Dialogue is not intended to recycle, but many of us often hear recycled banter. Is environmental commentary banter meant to recycle? For example, in the Hissing Wastes, Dorian and Iron Bull talk about sand. Varric and Cassender play eye-spy often in the Hinterlands. Are these 'filler' commentaries perhaps confusing people into thinking actual banter (I.E., Dorian and Iron Bull joking about 'staves') is recycling?

IF your explanation is correct--and we ARE getting the "correct" amount of banter--then that would mean BW intentionally took one of the most successful and popular elements of BOTH prior DA games and reduced it by about 90% for no apparent reason,

Which is why your explanation sounds kind of self-serving to long-time DA fans like myself who looked forward to this feature...

So here's everything I tried, in (roughly) the order I did it, over the course of the last few days:
Uninstalling and reinstalling my audio drivers
Cleared out journal and codices and kept them clear
The mount/dismount/rest dance
Changing the audio dynamic range to a random other setting
Unticking all of the account options
Uninstalling the game, reinstalling the game, and repairing the game via Origin
Launching the game with Origin offline
Traveling from the war table

I had some mixed results until last night after reinstalling. Last night, I took Sera, Bull, and Dorian to the Storm Coast (which is fairly well explored) and just kinda dicked around picking elfroot. Guys, I got five banters in an hour, firing every ten minutes or so. I couldn't believe it. Then, the banter petered out and was replaced by irrelevant environment comments, one every ten minutes or so. What do I mean by "irrelevant"? Dorian made a post-combat comment ("That went well!" or "Everyone still breathing?" etc) three or four times while I was running around - but always five or ten minutes AFTER I had last been in combat. At one point, Sera announced that she did not get on boats after having eaten - while we were standing around the Blades of Hessarian camp, well inland, with not a boat in sight. I'm far from knowledgeable on the subject, but it definitely gave me the impression that the game is "generating" banter/music/comments/etc as expected but the audio just isn't firing when it's supposed to.

So, Silith, I had the complete opposite happen to me - the longer I explored in a map that was already fairly well explored, the more banter was replaced by individual/environment comments.

I fast traveled from the map back to Skyhold and traveled from the war table to Forbidden Oasis with Cass, Varric, and Solas, and not a peep from them after about 45 minutes or so. There was one environment comment from Cass about finding Venatori there.

I did the same thing - this time traveling from the war table to Western Approach with Cass, Varric, and Blackwall. Was hoping they would have something to say about Here Lies the Abyss - seems rather relevant to those three in particular - but nothing.

So it seems like some final combination of the above workarounds (and blood magic) fixed banter for me - but for whatever reason the fix didn't "stick" after I used the war table trick for the first time. I will do some experimenting to see if exiting to main menu (or even desktop) any time I want to travel to a new zone and doing it all again will help, or if Handsome Hank from the other thread is on to something with only fast traveling from zones via the world exits on the map.

Might also try re-rolling - while I don't really want to use the default world state but I'm curious to see what happens if you're offline for the entire game.

I've had the same experience with all the fixes so far. It works for a little while, and then it's like the bug takes over again and it's back to silence.

Which is why your explanation sounds like self-serving BS to long-time DA fans like myself who routinely have to look behind just to be sure someone is actually there. Not to mention ambient music that randomly fades in and out then simply disappears .

I think they're just covering their tracks and pointing out that companions aren't supposed to be talking constantly. The rest of the OP noted that they hadn't been able to reproduce the bug (which, given how widespread it is elsewhere suggests that it may - may - mean a difference between the code the devs have and the code we have) and were continuing to look into it.

Until they can reproduce the bug, there is literally nothing they can do about it. Since they cannot as yet reproduce it, they're offering some clarification and best practice in the interim.

Interesting, thanks for sharing!

I am very sure that the Western Approach is completely bugged for many (dare I say everyone?), and I'm fairly certain that the Forbidden Oasis is too. Thank the Maker that at least the Hissing Waste works - I love the desert regions a lot, but until the banter works there I won't go to WA anymore. :(

If testing banter, do not do it there.

If it helps anybody at all, I've found that banters tends to trigger in or near campsites. If I switch out my party and run around the camp for a bit, I sometimes get dialogue, and then i can switch my party out over and over to repeat the process.

I paused my campaign for this... I still thoroughly enjoyed what I've played so far, but there are some polishing required like the response delay bug, doesn't bother me.

I think the banter bug might be the straw that broke the camel's back, because now I feel like I wasn't getting the 'complete' experience..

Thank god I'm still able to enjoy multiplayer though!

Not sure if this has been suggested a lot, but combat stops party banter, and they tend to wait a little bit after combat before talking. If your like me you fade step everywhere (or whatever the other class skills are) then this could be your problem.

As soon as i stopped doing this the companion banter came back. I guess fade step starts combat, so each time i use it ive started combat again, giving my companions no time to talk.

I’ve had banter extend into combat several times, and I’ve had banter trigger immediately when sheathing weapons several times…

Fair enough, i can only say what my experience was. The only banted ive had during combat was scripted banter, not random party banter, and while i have occasionally had banter immediately after, most of it comes after ive been walking for a bit. I went for around 20 hours of using fade step to get everywhere, with very little banter, and the moment i stopped using it i had 3 bits of banter in 30 minutes.

Could very easily be a coincidnce, or unrelated, however i was just pointing out what seemed to fix it for me :)

Oddly enough I did get one instance of banter in Western Approach - between Varric and Cole. I'm pretty sure it was their first interaction, too. Actually, that might have been last night? Or maybe the day before. At any rate it's not 100% broken for me, or at least no more broken than any other zone.

You're right, it's a shame it's so buggy, Approach is gorgeous!
