Disappointing. It makes sense to spread the banters out since it's such a big game and big zones but it still feels too quiet even so. I feel like I'm missing a connection with the characters I definitely had in the previous games, though I think that's a combination of things rather than just the scarcity of banter.

All this being said there are some places banter simply DOES NOT take place for me. Like the Hissing Wastes. No banter. At all. That needs to be checked.

There's meant to be music?     apart from tavern bard(s)?

Ditto sparse companion chat, PS4 version.

Some reddit users who were looking at the code were saying that when they compared a bugged save to a non-bugged save, both were showing banter as being fired in the code, but the bugged version wasn't actually playing for the player in game. So whats happening with you is that the banter has been fired off, because of the bug you didn't actually get it, and its giving new banter that was supposed to happen later.

Seems legit and maybe why it's "working as intended" from the log files, but not what the human-interface device hears...

Party banter has been as expected for me.  And I'm mostly stuck with a static group!

Just to add to the numbers, I too seem to be getting this bug. Banter is rare and it's not unusual for companions to be silent for several hours.

There's a tendency for speech to start at the begining of battle -- and I end up cutting it off by going into tactical camera/pause -- or after I activate an area transition (e.g. entering a cave/mine) and it's cut off by the loading screen. Though those may be location or plot specific instances of speech rather than random banter. It's noticable mostly because they speak so rarely.

The Skyhold war room fast travel workaround fixed the music in VR for me (didn't realise there was supposed to be music until reading about it). Don't yet know whether it affects banter.

Played and completed the game, I maybe got Party Banter 5 times over the course of 50 hours.

Ditto... except my playthrough took 100 hours. I went to the TV Tropes page for Inquisition last night and it was full of things from the banter, which sounds so amazing! I wish I got it.

Lets hope not but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being forgotten.

wait...so bioware doesn't think that the party banter or the missing music is a bug?

Im 55 hours into the game and i was wondering why the game felt so plain. THERE'S NO COMBAT, AMBIENT OR CUTSCENE MUSIC FOR ME. It sure felt weird npcs were dancing like idiots with no music after closing down Haven Rift. What a joke.

There's always audio cracks. I have to start game, load my save and quit, rinse and repeat 4 times to get rid of audio cracking.

There's constant failing of Search option too, cant find hidden quest items. I had to return to an old save which made me lose 4 hours of gameplay.

As for the banter, it fired up maybe 6-7 times for me during 55 hours. Here i thought Bioware was too lazy for writing good proper party banter. I'm really disappointed with my game now and lost interest to play more after figuring these short-comings were actually technical bugs..

They can't reproduce it yet which is why it won't be fixed in the next patch. It does not mean that they think that there is no bug - they are aware of the problem. It's really difficult bug to track down, obviously... :( It's not even exclusive to a platform, it happens on all versions as far as I am aware. I'm sure they are working hard on trying to fix it.

Re to the person complaining about no banter in Hissing Wastes - it's so strange, I played through the area yesterday and today and my party wouldn't stop talking. I didn't track it exactly, but I think I got at least 10 banter interactions. If the banter works, it is timed perfectly IMHO - not too much, not too little. It just has to work first :(

Wasn't having a huge amount of "no banter" and I was hearing music most of the time (it comes and goes), but it was definitely very quiet for very long stretches, especially the Western Approach. Tried the suggestion: cleared all the journal entries so they showed on the upper right hand side one after another as "completed", only traveled with the war table and the "exit map" points, no fast travel or mounts. I continued to make sure the journal entries cleared after I completed quests and made sure the codex was cleared too.

Started in Western Approach - still very quiet, even with a party I've never used together before. Eventually went to the Exalted Plains and the moment I got there (with Solas, Dorian and Cole, a party I hadn't used together before either) I hear a banter. Ran around doing the quests for about 2-3 hours, still have only visited the southern half of the map. In that time I heard maybe 10-12 banters, a few between all three of them, one related to a companion quest I'd just finished, plus some environmental comments. Once I paused directly after one, came back and unpaused and there was a separate one halfway through, so I don't know what it was about. Also ran back to rest at the camp and another one was halfway over when the "resting" blackout came back, but otherwise there was just banter every 5-10 minutes or so, which was kinda great.

I think there's definitely something to the whole journal thing and it seemed to take a little time to get going. I'll have to try it again tonight to see if it's a fluke, but there definitely seems to be some kind of thing related to the audio system and the clearing of old journal entries that's holding back the banter. If some of it is based on the game thinking "you have not yet left Haven, so this shouldn't be firing" and it's holding back other dialogues that way, that could be some of the problem right there. I haven't actually progressed the main story past getting Skyhold, so I'll also have to see if doing that opens more, but based on that one party I think there should have been a ton already, so...anyway, that was my experience with trying it out.

The whole party banter thing is on the ropes for me sometimes I get sometimes I don't that's not what is really bugging me it's the fact that some conversations with characters can't progress at all I'm stuck at An Ideal Romance I start the whole scene but the conversation gets stuck and I can't even skip forward through it to progress further so I think I may be putting this game on the shelf for a bit till a patch comes out to see if it fixes these problems which sucks because I'm really into this game right now so hopefully a patch ain't far off.

Got my first banter on Western Approach \o/

and it was a doozy between Blackwall and Cole. Cole wants a beard lol

Shame that all I've got left to do there is the dragon and a few shards.

I have been getting lots of banter in the Exalted Plains tho I only went there after I fixed the music with the War Table fast travell thing so dunno whether that helped the banter or not.

This is the exact same single conversation I got in the Approach

I am 20 hours into the game (yes, I know, I'm slow) on the PC version and I have had 2 random party banters. That's 1 every 10 hours of play. I'm also getting very little music while exploring, mostly just for a few seconds when I log into a zone and that's it.

I've tried the reddit fixes (clearing out codex/inventory/journal, mount/unmount/rest, fast traveling through the war table) and none of them have improved the music or banter chances.

The game is still fun, but I'm very disappointed that I'm missing out on a huge portion of the experience, and I'm not getting the real game that the designers created.

So, I did the War table fast travel. Set my screen to fullscreen windowed. Never Alt+Tab.  And went offline  I seem to be getting the right amount of banter now.

How do you go offline without alt tabbing?

My current playthrough, I've been avoiding manual saves. I get music and banter pretty regularly now. I saw it as a potential fix and it's worked for me. Although, sometimes waiting for an autosave to trigger can be super frustrating.

You turn off the internet or go in offline mode in origin.

I might have to start over. I really don't want to play the same effing character again. I'm in too deep and really close to the Nightmare cheevo so there's no turning back from my current PC. It was all good in the Hinterlands. But after Skyhold everyone becomes mute. I probably had 4 banters total with Sera, Blackwall, and Cassandra, and Iron Bull post-Haven. That's four in 70 hours.

I used JeffZero's workarounds and the only thing that was fixed was the music.

Just for the record - on the PS4 I'm almost 90 hours in and have had little party banter. Constant change of companions doesn't seem to help. Also - almost no music aside from the singing bard in the bar and wind/weather sounds. I've tried the reddit fixes as well with no luck.
