Do you have the subtitles on for conversations and ambient talk?

Ah, very good question.

Can't say for certain at the moment (at work)... though 'conversations' is the likely choice.

Will try it with ambient enabled as well.

At least then, if it does work, even if I can't hear it... I can read it.

I think the core of this problem is that no one knows when or how often banter is supposed to fire.  Some users have said 5-10 minutes.  Others, 1 or 2 an hour.  For me, I get clusters of chatter and long stretches of silence, even after switching party members out.  This has left us with the issue of gamers perceiving they have an issue because someone said they hear banter every 5 minutes.  I'm not saying there isn't an issue, but Bioware can alleviate some of this anxiety by telling us how often "normal" is.  For goodness sake, users didn't even know music is supposed to come in and out.  Bioware needs to communicate with us more on this.

Urm... where does Conal say that recently?  The OP by Conal was on 28 Nov, Mark's comment on Twitter was from 2 days ago.  By my calculation (admittedly my math ain't too good), that was AFTER Conal's OP.  LOL - timelines!

My bad, I apologise to Conal and Mark.

Started a new game, made sure that when I was prompted to venture forth to the Hinterlands at the war table in Haven that I accepted, and have been religiously clearing off all new items / quests / codex entries, plus travelling via map exit points / war table only.

Have had more banter in the first few hours than I had in my first playthrough total. It's amazing.

Occasionally everybody does go quite for a stretch of time after the first 3 banters, but then they all start up again. In fact I even had 4 banters between Solas and Vivienne in the space of 5 minutes.

So add me to the list of people who seem to be having success with these methods, hopefully that aids with the debugging.

To all the angry people, Bioware *need* to be able to reliably reproduce this in order to fix it. It's not enough to watch videos or listen to the pages of complaints. If they can't figure out the exact set of variables that trigger the problem, then they have zero way of knowing if any fix they implement actually works. Can you imagine how much angrier people will be if Bioware make some random changes, advertise it as being fixed, but then it's still broken for everyone?

I have an idea about whats wrong with banter not saying it truly is but just an idea, I myself having issues with it. What made me think of it was some banter between blackwall and sera them discussing a story sera had told about a tavern and blackwall wanted to here the end of it, now I had not heard the banter about the tavern story. I am wondering during debug it says bantering is firing correctly and all our cases it does but not all of it gets parsed through to audio and subtitles. This is how it could be possible to be silent in areas you've spent a large amount of time in (say 20 hours) and you have heard only two conversations despite party combination yet behind the scenes due to you being in an area so long all the banter has fired and exhausted itself but you only hearing a small percentage of it? Thoughts particularly hearing banter about previous banter without hearing the conversation that lead to this banter beforehand.

Dennet is also a factor now?

Horses are. And some people reported to have quite a lot of banter before they started the Dennet mission. So I avoided him as long as I could, but it didn't really help.

All right, I know for a fact that while going through the HInterlands, I've had Cassandra and Solas have the same banter trigger at least two or three times. Hours apart maybe but I distinctly recall thinking to myself that I had heard this banter already.

Fortunately, my sound seems to be working fine (music, banter triggering--although there is less banter on my second playthrough so far, but not horribly so), but I wanted to add my +1 to the "I'm hearing banter lines more than once" statistic.

I also think the area you are in is a factor too. Seems i've gotten a couple rounds in hinterlands but nowhere else..

I'm not that far into the game, as in haven't got Skyhold yet (had to wait a week for a new PC to be built) but am getting banter, not a lot but some.

I've had it in the Hinetrlands, though it is sporadic and interspersed with long silences but Dennet didn't seem to affect me. The Storm Coast has been the most bantery for me to date.

Nothing at all in VR, if that means anything.

I'm also putting my hand up for repeat banter.

Out of curiosity. Did you have to delete your old saves or doesn't matter?

Hello long time lurker here.... but with recent speculation and fixes i had need to add my own.......Well first i reinstalled the game and then removed 60fps worka round...started new game in offline mode and LOADED deafult word state....Lo and behold music in areas and banter every 15-45 minutes and even ever muted characters bantered with each other.   Then a try it again with new char and every thing was great til Val...(after that 1st conversation between S/V/C/I and that scout that greets you in Val. ) then every things went silent. So i loaded last save before Val and done it again.....silence. So i reloaded again ...and this time after conversation something was different ....Val music was still there and I EVEN GOT BANTERS IN VAL o.O-

So in my theory its not Horsemaster but 1st conversation in Val that trigers the bug....

Crap. Now I have dead silence. Two pops from the tv before the sound went. But youtube has sound so it isn't my hardware. Rebootong now but ...BOO!

Interestingly enough all was good (besides silence in VR) and now that I have picked up Sera it hits me.

is this still being investigated? hopefully this helps - i'm on PS4 and i noticed that there is almost no banter when in the western approach and hissing wastes.  there seems to be plenty in storm coast, hinterlands and emerald groves.  i used 6 different party members and noticed the lack of dialogue only in those 2 areas.

i was on foot the whole time i was in these areas.

maybe it's a where, not a when problem.

or maybe i am just imagining things

It’s a general problem, bschaaf, although those two areas maybe affected even more than others.

You can add me to the list of people doing the above.  Each time I play, I go through my journal etc, and I've had quite a good amount of banter (for me, if I got with something in 1 hour it's 'good'.  but yes, BW tell us!) and been having music to boot.

If you haven't tried the suggestion listed above, do so.  It might work

My game sounds have the same problem, the music does not start, sometimes  walking on horse helps but not always. In my first PT I was all over but got little to no banter, I even though this was a game thing and not a bug. It seem to have even less banter than DA 2 which was really strange.

I don't know if I should start another thread for this or not, as most people seem to mention this as part of the party banter bug (which I don't think I am experiencing) - but I don't have much background music, no combat music, no music in Val Royeaux, and no music in Skyhold.

I don't know if other areas are affected, but what tends to happen in The Hinterlands and Storm Coast is the music will start to play, for maybe 15 or 20 seconds, then it just fades out and another piece of a song will start some time after that.

It's very frustrating because it's painfully noticeable, and everywhere feels so empty as a result (peoples' voices even echo like we're in a big empty room sometimes).

I also experienced an issue early in the game, before unlocking Skyhold, where the bard stopped playing tunes in the Haven tavern.

When I first traveled to Val Royeaux, the bard there wasn't playing music, either. After recruiting Sera she seemed to start playing again, but with no other frame of reference I definitely can't say if it's working as intended.

All I can say for sure is that there are definitely some audio issues with this game that need to be fixed. I only saw an official response to the party banter bug, but has Bioware made a comment about the lack of audio consistency?

Why is there no music in some areas? Why doesn't the music work properly in others? Why does the bard sometimes break pre-Skyhold?

This is driving me crazy...

I just wanted to add to this... honestly, I'm not sure if I'm bugged or anything.

The bard was definitely a bit wonky, but other than that I think my concerns are just paranoia to be honest.

I've been so concerned by the thought that I might be missing out that I've focused on that far too much.

Can't wait for the weekend to enjoy the game and advance the story...

All the likes to this! People keep defending Bioware, when all we need is a bit of communication to help clear things up and calm some fears. I even pm'd a couple of the devs regarding clarification of the audio issues, such as how the music is meant to work, and despite certain users statements, the devs just ignored the messages.....just like they've been ignoring this and various other threads.

I did the exact same thing and have been questing in the hinterlands for 3 and a half hours without a single banter, but music coming in and out all the time. I feel like I'm one of the only people who has almost no sound bugs outside of almost 0 banter in all my playthroughs. The most banter conversations I've ever heard between 2 characters is 2-3 in 130 hours of playtime, but i have had consistent music going in and out during the hinterlands, VR, and other places. I also haven't had any glitches with convos stopping or anything, just no banter....ever..seemingly. Randomly i'll get like 2 banters in 5 minutes one day and then no banter for 5 days straight.

I don't remember...but are you supposed to get banter at the start of the hinterlands? I did templar and mage quests there along with some gathering and still didn't hear a peep outside of battle/location sounds.

PC here, and playing on a low end PC (Can get really good FPS on all low settings except high on mesh for not shiny hair, but can't turn much else up if i want to play smoothly.)

Xbox One here:

- I have never had any noticeable problems with banter, on any of my 3 characters (qunari, human, dwarf). Probably 80 combined hrs so far.
- Some banter does repeat....a lot! i.e. Solas keeps reaming The Iron Bull about the Qun with the same convo; The Iron Bull keeps talking to Sera about stealing his kill; Varric & Cassandra playing Eye Spy; etc. Some of it repeats too damn much, imo.
- I am a completionist and spend a lot of time in 1 map at a time. Sometimes hrs, before leaving to a new zone. I never notice a drop in banter. It actually starts repeating.
- I have had instances of music not playing in Val Royeaux. When I left and came back, there would be music.
- I have had a few instances where environmental music abruptly stops, even whole standing still...as if someone hit mute.
- I have a LOT of problems getting the Bard to sing. Most of the time, in any tavern, she will not sing or play the first couple of times entering the building.

Party banter works fine for me.

However, there is no music when I enter Val R. and that occurs with two games that I started...

I turned on subtitles, but when banter does happen, no subtitles show up. So how is that supposed to help?
