Part of me is wondering if it's the "random" algorithm used for banter that is actually working as intended - only, it's too random (if there's such a thing lol).

Except that is not how random works.  If it's truly random, then yes, on occasion, the time between banters could be lengthy, but over a period of time, the time between banters should average out to a lower number.  If some people are getting banters only once every 30mins, 1 hour, etc consistently while others are getting every 15 mins then it's the opposite of random...

SPOILER ALERT!!! "Venatori, Corypheus must have sent his..." - Solas during hinterlands part 1 mission. Cory hasn't been discovered at all, why is he spoiling who the main bad guy is before the bad guy has been uncovered?

Idk i'd take it though...i haven't been able to get solas to have a single line of banter with anyone in over 100+ hours of gameplay...literally 0 banters from him. Cassandra, dorian, and sera are the only ones who seem to say a word, and even then it's once every 20 hours.

No, random is random. Over extremely long periods of time, over vast numbers, they average somewhere if the algorithm is truly random. At an individual scale, a truly random result could be someone getting banter every 3 seconds and someone else never.

But obviously the randomization in DAI actually happens within small, confined parameters.

Yes it's definitely within confined parameters. Similar if two players were to roll a 20 sided die. On one iteration, one player might get 1, while another might get 20. But over 100 rolls, each player will average somewhere close to 10. That's what I mean - you can take a 100 hour playthrus as many many random rolls. Therefore it's outside the realm of possibility (OK maybe that's a little strong, but at least very improbable) that someone would average banter every 20 mins while someone else would average banter every 4 hours over a 100 hours. Individual banters are on random timer, yes, but entire playthrus should average to a similar gap between banters. Of course that's assuming really random, but it think we have realized there are a number of factors that prevent banters, which is why the codex trick works.

I've only encountered it twice.  Once at Val Royeaux when going to address the Chantry.  And Once during Cassandra's personal mission.

I'll add my experience here.

Throughout the Hinterlands I adventured with Cassandra, Varric, and Solas. I remember getting some banter and music, then after a while it stopped completely. I assumed that the group had said all they were going to say, so I went to a new zone (Storm Coast). Hours went by with no banter, and that is when I hit up the forums and found out about the bug. So I went there with Blackwall, Sera and Vivienne who I had recruited in the meantime but had never adventured with. Nothing. I checked into Val Royeaux. No music either. Damn, I had the banter bug.

So I went into my completed quests and scrolled through them, and was spammed by the Quest Complete message upon exiting the journal. For good measure I did the same for all Codex entries. Fast travelled from the War Room to Storm Coast, and then Val Royeaux where I was greeted by music!

Confident that the bug was resolved, I went back to the Storm Coast where Blackwall asked Sera how the end of a story she had told went. What story? I thought, they had been mute up until now. I guess I'll have to Youtube the banter. So it seems to me that the program *thinks* it's playing the party banter, but in actuality nothing is happening.

Since then I have been careful to fast travel from the War Room (and never back out of it) and also keep my Completed Quest/Journal clear. I have had no banter issues again as a result of this for which I am very happy.

I just wanted to highlight my experience because I cannot understate how much better the game is with the party banter. I have been extremely tempted to start again (due to the bug, plus I'd like to tweak my character's appearance) but I was already 40 hours in, so I haven't.

I really hope you can find a fix for this Bioware because it is a major feature, plus most of it is so good! It's a shame it's being missed.

This party banter bug is the one bug I do not have.  Mine talk all the time. Some combinations seem to talk a lot more.  I am deaf so I have the music and sound turned off in game.

I do wonder now if me having all music, sound etc turned off and captions on since I loaded the game is an issue with why I have constant conversation and you all do not?

I just played for about three hours straight tonight. Got Cole as a brand new party member and traveled with him, so I should have had fresh banter available and definitely should not have heard it all before. No banter in that entire time. I was running around Therinfal Redoubt and the Hinterlands. I got music playing intermittently in the Hinterlands, after trying the various suggestions I've seen to "fix" this banter bug:

- Go Offline in Origin

- Remove manual saves and use only autosaves

- Update Realtek audio drivers

- Go through all codex and journal entries until none have the 'unread' star

- Fast travel out of war room into a camp, rest in a tent, mount a horse, ride off a bit, dismount

- Change audio settings (this time from TV to Night)

Obviously, none of these things worked. I should have heard someone saying *something* during three hours of play with a new party member, right? This bug is killing the game. I'm on PC using Windows 7 64-bit.

My own data to add:

I just started a new character. I was running around the hinterlands with Varric, Cass, and Solas. Lots of banter happening. Then I get to the cultists and ran through closing the rift, picking up the agent, and getting the potion for the kid's mother. My quest journal went through a process where it seemed to be stuck in a loop. I got the completed quest message over and over for a couple quests. After that, no banter at all.

So, after 115 hours of playing I got maybe 20 banters total. That was with switching characters, trying all the fun tricks of changing the audio, mounting and dismounting, resting, checking the journal... yea they posted a list earlier in this thread, so I don't think I need to repeat the list. I tried it all. I don't ever use my horse, cause its boring and you miss things on a horse. I explored the heck out of the world, and "stopped to pick some elfroot" >.<   I had several party groups who didn't speak to each other at all. like not once. The only ones that ever talked to each other were Varric, Viv, and Iron Bull. Solas chimed in like once. Cassandra was a mute, Sera more of a mute, Dorian pranced around not using his sexy British accent ever, Cole was silent as well. You can't tell me that Cassandra, Sera, Dorian, and Cole all had NO banter coded. 115 hours and no banter from those guys.. and I played with them plenty. I want to play the game through again since I beat it once, but I don't know that I really want to unless this gets fixed. I was playing a Human Mage, and I want to play an Elf... and I really don't want to do another 115 hours of no banter. So please, keep looking into this cause it is most certainly not the way the game is supposed to be. I have seen the youtube videos with proper banter and I have gotten none of that. I realize you guys have a million bugs to fix, but really... banter is a integral part of the DA series, so please fix it.

So it wont be fixed in the first patch ( which isnt here as of yet ) ........only god knows when the 2nd patch will hit , o well im sure it annoys Bioware as much probably more than the rest of us since its their game still though playing DA without Banters is like playing Call of Duty without guns yes its THAT serious to me :-) now we wait.

Wouldn't surprise me if can't play this game relativity bug free for a few more months yet. They had years and extensions and this is the turd they released? Amazing how incompetent this whole thing is.

Oh get your freaking heads out of the sand Bioware and update your playerbase FFS..

No word from the dev team in over a week now on either progress on the bug or clearing up confusion regarding audio, despite pages and pages of posts that keep coming in.

Just ridiculous.

I pm'd a couple of the devs that frequent the forums because some of the users that keep defending Bioware's actions suggested it, and they just ignored the messages. I can even see that they've read them too. If you got this kind of interaction in any other industry, people would be grabbing their pitchforks. Could you imagine if you were at a restaurant and a bunch of people were missing parts of their meals and the restaurant said they were "looking into it" and you never heard from them again?

I thought maybe turning down graphics settings would help. I had mine set to the max settings for everything, but I changed the overall setting to Automatic and that knocked things down to High and less than the max. I restarted the game and loaded my save. While playing in the Fallow Mire, I started with Cole, Blackwall, and Vivienne. Had a banter between Blackwall and Vivienne, and music played intermittently while I explored. Seemed like a good sign! I ended up swapping Vivienne for Solas at some point, still in the Fallow Mire. Had another banter between Blackwall and Solas! Played some more, ended up swapping Cole for Sera and Blackwall for Cassandra. I didn't have any other banters. I played from 11:30-12:30, so an hour of play and two banters.

Maybe lowering graphics settings is another fix to go along with clearing out the completed quests, etc.?

Seems unlikely to do so on consoles? You could try on the PC, but of course you'd have to avoid all the other fixes to verify it does something:)

This is so heartbreaking. We're talking about issues like in 60+ hours Cassandra and Varric have spoken two lines to eachother. No amount of explaining will convince me that's as intended. And what about the complete absence of background music?

I've had a similar experience. It really dulls the game. I was reading all these reviews about how the characters responded to each other so well and just didn't understand it until I realized I had this bug. This is not normal and needs more testing.

Could you give us the number of average banters in an hour (or over a few hours)? I haven't been to hissing wastes yet (so I definitely haven't exhausted the banter). I'll go there with party members I don't frequently use and just count them up.

For what it's worth i wanted to add my voice to the ones asking for a fix.

I rarely have party chat, and i got background music just for few seconds here and there.

For the most part i walk around in complete silence.

This is way beyond lazy or rushed coding, so i guess can't really be working as intended.

Please keep looking into this. Thanx

Hahaha that is exactly how I feel, only got to meeting Varric and turned it off because I heard about this bug. Which sucks cause I'm itching to get deep into it.
