So I should hear banter every 10/15 minutes. That's interesting considering I can literally play for 3/5 hours and hear nothing at all.

In general my companions seem slightly more chatty in the Hinterlands, while nobody says a single word in the Hissing Wastes.

Hey Everyone,

Here is an update on how the banter and music system work from the BioWare blog:

If you would have explained this more in depth like you did in this blog, earlier. It would have helped to alleviate some of the stress and not knowing what is working or not sooner.

I do get the music for 10-30 seconds in a few minutes interval and I thought that was not intended and it was suppose to play at all times like, let's say how it is in Skyrim. Now I know at least it is working as intended. Especially how quiet it can be in Hinterlands etc.

As for banter it was also good to know more in depth. Still doesn't change that sometimes banter can be very very far apart. But it at least make me not focus too much on and and when I get back to playing I can at least just try and enjoy it for what it is.

I do want and wish that you guys would have put in the "increase" of frequency that you plan in this patch though, since you acknowledge some areas (edge as you call it) is very little banter.

Anyways I am going to try not to focus so much on the music and banter, because it ruins what otherwise is a good game. I might have gripes that I prefer the more visceral and intense combat of DA2 and more "epic" fights that way than the attrition in DAI. Still the game is good.

I definitely do not get banter every 10-15 minutes, more like once every 4-5 hours, and playing offline and all the other fan fixes haven't changed anything for me.

So the update that the next patch will increase banter frequency. Isn't that useless since people don't see banter at all?

It may or may not be… I don’t think there’s anybody who has had absolutely no banter; even once per ten hours is sometimes. As such, it’s possible that increasing the frequency will work—and it may work better than linearly, if the increased hits happen to occur at better intervals and the underlying problem is timing or resource related.

Conal also confirmed separately that they’re looking into the Journal/quest status thing even though it wasn’t specifically mentioned.

I've never had banter.... Unless you count that random comment about the place i'm in banter.

I wasn't sure where to post this, I know this thread is about the Banter but on the Xbox1 version there is several points in dialogue scenes where you have to press X to advance the dialogue or you just sit staring at that character with no option wheel. I'm not sure if I miss dialogue because of this but the way the answers are given from other characters in the dialogue after hitting X to advance it sounds as though I may be.

First time I experienced this was the first time I talked to Dorian in Skyhold.

Second time was at Adamant Fortress in dialogue with Stroud, Hawke and Livius Erimond.

It happened off and on through out the game randomly.

They need to make banter more frequent. If it firing so rarely was a deliberate design choice, it was a mistake. Banter is important for outlining the characters, and how they relate to each other. Imagine playing DA2 and never hearing the snarky conversations between Isabella Aveline, or never hearing Leliana tease Sten about playing with a kitten in DA:O. If banter in those games fired as rarely as in this one, it'd be a defintie possibility.

I'm just about to head into the final mission, and then Varric tells the Iron Bull he spent time in Kirkwall. Really? Wow, guess the Bull never made that connection in the downtime of our quest to save the world. Too bad I'll never know where that revelation might have lead.

Thank you very much for the update! I admit that the 10-15 minute average is...surprising. My first playthrough averaged less than 1 banter every 2 hours; I never used a mount outside of that one racing quest, and I changed up my party often.

Thank you for continuing to investigate this.

At first, I was able to get banter by using the horse in camp trick. That stopped working. Then I moved to fast travel from war table. That was good but stopped working. Then I tried the updating journal and codex. It also appears to no longer be working. All of these workarounds are a lot of work and detract from the experience.

My first playthrough was 144 hrs. I did not discover the banter bug existed until 130hr mark. I just assumed two things - Bioware did not have as much banter this game and they did not launch with the option for us to respond during banter. Imagine my shock when I found out that it was a defect. I had very little banter first playthrough (about 20. know this because I have been trying record all party conversations). Also, in my first playthrough, I only had one conversation where I could respond. In my second one, I have had two so far - one after solidifying my romance and one not related to the relationship.

Second playthrough now at 90hr mark. Many of the fixes I did above helped. However, I still have gone long span of time with no banter. And this is in places where I know there should be some. I think being online is part of the cause. I forgot to go offline last night and had no banter in almost 3 hrs. Then today went offline, and bam banter every 3-5 mins.

In my two playthroughs, I can attest to the following - Western Approach is broken. In over 200 hrs, I have only had 2 banter convos in that area and those might have been triggered events.

Also, even with the workarounds, the banter bug can return. It may have something to do with quest updating or even the number of save files (deleted a ton of save files on 2nd playthrough and banter started up again). Not sure but the bug seems to happen unless you play a specific way - only fast traveling from war table, constantly ticking off your journal and codex. Since most people will not play this way normally, it explains why so many of us have this bug. It diminishes an otherwise great experience.

There is a problem clearly. On my third run i managed to escape the banter bug (i have banter every 10 min on average), but Weastern Aproach is still silent as a tomb. Party won't even comment when i am near a place to set camp. If that zone can be bugged i assume all zones can bug out.

Like Dalendria, I tried all those workarounds and they would work for maybe two banters and then silence for several hours. The blog about how party banter works is obviously the ideal way it should work, as my party will begin banter when I start a battle, talking through it so I can't even hear over the battle sound effects (and someone said something about battle music, but they were kidding, right? Cuz that doesn't exist unless it's a main quest battle area? Right?) My typical party banter experience in my new playthrough:

Zone in to camp, party talks immediately while still in camp or just as we leave it. No banter for hours (aside from comments about the specific mission) and then I leave the zone, frustrated that I should've just taken out my mount instead of walking in silence.

I have the banter bug as detailed in an earlier post.  I tried all of your suggestions and none of them altered the banter frequency.  I still think that many of us would really like a banter slider that allowed us to set banter frequency like an intermittent wiper on a car windshield.  Some people like lots of it and others care nothing for it.  It is a HUGE part of the game for me and I really miss it.

The suggestion from a user to delete saves and reload from an auto save DOES work. (Sorry wanted to give them credit but can't find it to link.)

I've boiled it down to this.

Enter an area.  Manually Save.  Go to a tent in the campsite.  Click Rest.  This causes an auto save.  Open up the folder.  Delete the manual save and reload the auto save.

If I do this every couple of hours, I get to hear banter about once ever fifteen minutes.  If I return to my normal play style of frequent manual saves, the banter disappears again.  It is rather bitter sweet. I found lots of things like I was missing like Bull getting all silly and bouncy when you see a dragon "Can we kill it Boss?  Can we?  Can we?"  I had thought it odd before that we walk up on a dragon and no one even notices it.  Just dead silence.

Bioware should be able to reproduce the banter bug by playing the way I do (like someone whose game is capriciously unstable due to graphic card issues).  Never go more than about ten to twenty minutes without a full save.  Obviously whatever is causing the banter bug has something to do with a counter or flag that is set by the autosave procedure that is either not set or set improperly by the manual save.

From Conal Pierce's Blog post

"In areas like Skyhold and Val Royeaux, apart from bards or scripted plot-specific moments, there is likewise no music, as we wanted to make these spaces feel real."

This was eye opening to me.  I rarely if ever hear music while questing which I find very disappointing.  However when I return to Skyhold and am trying to do housekeeping things like sell loot and craft etc, I hear constant repeating non stop war drums.  A short riff that repeats incessantly.  It is INCREDIBLY annoying.  My children refer to the game as "The annoying drum game".  They insist I wear headphones.  I've taken to manually muting music when I'm in skyhold.

Can anything be done to fix this please?

Susanne

Hey Everyone,

Here is an update on how the banter and music system work from the BioWare blog:

Your party may chat (or bicker) among themselves about all kinds of topics: getting to know each other, working through issues, or even just commenting on the surrounding scenery.

So are all party comments treated equally by the game? What I mean is, when whatever triggers the "banter" happens, is it just as likely for it to be a one-liner about tripping over roots as it is to be an actual conversation? And consequently are those of us who average party members actually speaking to each other every 2-3 hours just insanely unlucky?

I also save constantly and am getting the bug. I may try a few hours on a new char and do no manual saves, see what happens.

This HAS to be it.  I quicksave + some hard saves pretty compulsively and haven't heard more than 10 banters in 60 hours- heavily weighted towards the earlier hours.

And it's frustrating that Bioware seems to think that upping the frequency of the banters will solve the problem (and implying that the player is just being stupid/impatient).  It's not the frequency of the firings- clearly stuff is firing but never making it to the screen.  I managed to trigger a banter by trying one of those black magic solutions listed here (going through my completed quest log)- the banter that triggered between Varric and Cole suggested there had been an earlier conversation, but I had never heard it (and yes, I turn on any and all subtitles as a habit- and never read it either).

The music should stop if you go to the war room and then leave it (it should fade out once you end up back in Skyhold).

It gets stuck playing if you fast travel from the war table, and will continue to play until you either leave the war room or get warped to a story mission.

To me it seems area related - I've got plenty of banter in Emprise du Lion and Hissing Wastes, some banter on the Storm Coast - but nothing in Emerald Groves, Western Approach or Hinterlands. And I do switch companions and do their quests and story, so it can't be because they "exhausted all their dialog options".

I also heard Cassandra/Varric banter that suggested that this was a follow up to something but I hadn't hear the first part. Perhaps if you advance too much in the story and don't take certain companion combos along you get the banter only from the middle? That seems... kind of odd, but it might be intentional. Difficult to know.

I haven't noticed if all the codex clearing and/or travelling via Skyhold wartable was helping. I think if I ran around 12 countercklowise around my house singing "Andraste guide me", it would probably have a similar effect (which means none).

Funny enough, the save thing occurred to me just last night, too. I noticed my husband didn't notice any banter issues.

What I also noticed was how utterly mad he got if something went wrong and he hadn't saved in a long time; he saves so rarely it's downright weird to me, I would estimate that I have 10x as many saves as he does. I like playing with keyboard because I take lots of screenshots... and I can hit the quick save button all the time.

It IS a fairly key difference between how he and I play; I am tapping that quick save every time I turn a corner it seems.

I didn't alter my behavior last night in that regard, although I did try the "travel from War Room" trick and was getting a decent amount of banter. Not a lot between party members, but a lot on the quests, or with the Inquisitor (Blackwall and the Inquisitor discussed racing nugs, heh).

Anyone know of a reliable spot that autosaves that we could use as an easy way to get one quickly to try this out?

GUYS IF THE SIMPLE WAR TABLE TRAVEL DOES NOT FIX IT FOR YOU - TRY THIS:

Unfortunately, it isn't possible to travel from the war table on PC except when going to the main story missions that ask if you want to travel now - or at least I am not, the Fast Travel button is always greyed out. (Presumably this is a separate bug, if you are supposed to be able to use the Fast Travel from the war table in general. I haven't checked this day's patch to see if it has been fixed.)

EDIT: I was wrong and have now been told how to use the Fast Travel by clicking already completed objectives. Thanks, abr!

I only get banter about once an hour, even with sera in the party. My boyfriend however, can't shut her up lol. I've watched him play through the same scenarios that i have and the conversation is constant. I, for one, would love more banter and conversation options with the other party members. It seemed like there was a huge surge of party Convo and then back to nothing.

And just a suggestion but, it would be great if there could be an icon above the party members when in the keep, if they have something new to say. Constantly running around the keep and checking in with each and every person is really annoying when none of them have anything new. to say.
