Thank you so much.  Going to the war room stops the drums.  You are my hero.

I'm just passing along stuff that others have discovered, but I'm happy to have helped.

Fast traveling shouldn't affect what you hear in other areas, but as you've discovered, you'll want to return to the war room as soon as you get back to Haven or Skyhold since the music only turns off if you "back out" of the war room normally (it gets stuck on when you fast travel).

Music can also end up playing in Val Royeaux (it will replay its entry theme each time the area is loaded), but it doesn't loop (at least I don't think it does) so shouldn't be too much an issue (it's just really loud). I assume the fix is the same, though I've never tested it.

I wonder if you might be on to something here regarding the manual saves. I save like crazy too (quicksave every minute and manual save every couple of minutes on ps4 or with gamepad).
I know I said I'm done with testing but now I really want to know if not saving at all and/or only using one or two save slots makes a difference... Should be easy to try out.

Okay I just wasted two hours "testing" this, I really should stop.

I used an old savegame from my bugged (next to no banter) game on PS4. It was early after acquiring Skyhold, Vivienne, Solas, Dorian in party. Cleaned out codex/journal, stayed online. In each test, I idled 30 minutes in Storm Coast (with a bit of combat here and there and running around), then travelled to Hinterlands and idled for another 30 minutes. At the time of testing, I had 19 different save files on the profile. For one hour, I did a manual save every 2-5 minutes. Then I went back to the first save to redo everything, this time without manually saving at all (just running around, idling, some combat with the occasional bear).
Result: no difference whatsoever. I got some kind of party interaction almost exactly every ten minutes: 4 banter + 2 environment comments in the test with saving, 3 banter, 2 environment comments in the test without saving.

**** this. This is so much more banter than I get when actually playing. How is this possible... At least I know that I can happily continue saving whenever I want to.

I tested this again today and there is a difference for me between reloading from autosave and use of manual save.  Reloading from autosave and deleting out old saves produced about 1 banter per 15 mins for me and the other is 1 an hour.  Perhaps the PC platform is different?  My games are all on PC.

I played offline for about 3.5 hours in Plains and Graves, and got 3 banters the whole time. It wasn't really an hour apart, but all lumped together. It's better than the 0 banter I was getting before, but seems like it should be better...

I'm reluctant to try the deleting old saved bit because I like keeping prior saves. I do see a bit of difference when reloading from an autosave, but I do that without deleting other saves. Is there a reason why this method should work better?

I have a couple of games going.  In all of my games - previous to the one I started today after the patch - I have had quite a bit of banter going on between Solas, Varric, and Cassandra in the Hinterlands.  Today - after patch in my new game - I have nothing, except maybe a comment or two about the area, but nothing between companions.  I noticed a bit of party discussion between companions right at the start of the game, before even getting to Haven.  After arriving in Hinterlands though, silence.

Also, I created a new world state for this new game.  I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I did notice the problem occurring after I updated whereas I didn't have the problem before.

I'll go back to one of my other games and see if I am experiencing the same problems.

To summarize:

- I have other games, in which there was plenty of party banter, including in the Hinterlands.

- Didn't have the problem before the patch.

- Today, I created a new world state.

-- I watched the 'movie' for the new world state before exporting from the Keep into the game.

-- Updated the game.

-- Created a new game.

-- Currently in Hinterlands with Varric, Cassandra, and Solas, but so far there has been no party banter where as there was quite a bit pre-patch.

- I'll check previous games to see if the problem exists there.

Update: I went back to a previous game - one created pre-patch update - and I had 3 party conversations in less than an hour: Solas/Cassandra x2 and Varric/Cassandra x1.  I had been playing my new game - after updating - for close to two hours with no party banter.  I'm starting to wonder if it has something to do with the new world state I created for my new game.  I may have to test this theory tomorrow.  Right now it's too late to do so tonight.

Something I forgot to mention, I did switch to offline mode in my new game, though I don't think I played for very long.  So, tomorrow I'll play my new game in offline mode and see if anything triggers.  I'm going to also play my other games - created pre-patch - to see if the problem is there. I'll try both online and offline modes and I'll create a new world state for a new game to see if the problem is there in offline or online mode.

Update: I played on the game I created yesterday in offline mode.  In the space of an hour and a half I have gotten 7 party banter dialogues: Cassandra/Solas x2; Varric/Solas x4; Varric/Solas/Cassandra x1.  I also hit F5 to quick save quite often, so I don't think that's it either.  At this point, I really don't think the patch has anything to do with the bug especially since looking at other reports about it.  From what I've seen people had reported this bug before the patch.  Now, I'm starting to think that maybe being connected might be the problem, just going by what I've seen and what others have reported.

Perhaps tomorrow I'll try a different game while connected and see if I get close to the same amount of banter in the same amount of time, or if I get any banter at all.

I've been having great experiences with the Patch / Workaround / Hotfix and noticed that my banters have been fine also. Music has been firing regularly in phased bursts as described as intended in Conal's Music / Banter post.

* I'm quite fastidious with my journal and codex maintenance, however a Banter fired with journal quest updates still marked as "unread" so I don't believe this is necessarily causative, at least in my case;

* I'm playing with the Origin interface disabled in-game (it's an option in Origins, not within the game) and I'm still connected to the DA servers;

* I used Map Exiting as well as Fast Travel via War Room and no problems either way. I think Map Travel and Mounting tend to cause issues of some sort, albeit in consistently.

The biggest issue for me has been keeping a very close eye on not going into combat unnecessarily, as *I believe this doesn't contribute to the timer for banters to fire*. For example, I do *not* use Evade (as a Rogue) to move about the world faster as that essentially triggers combat, nor do I haphazardly auto attack the air.

Also, I'll make a note to hunt down trash mob animals (Rams, Fennecs, etc...) that tend to accidentally get "tagged" if they wander into a fight. I strongly suspect keeping these pets alive but tagged as Aggressive is possibly causing the game to recognise some players as still in combat, or else in combat maybe until they zone out (or the mob somehow gets reset), thus elongating banter timers.

I'm not 100% on this, but thought I'd propose it just in case. It means you need to really chase down those Rams!!!

EDIT - Map Fast Travel does not cause any problems, however it does appear that it may reset the timer on banters. I would conjecture that players experiencing lower levels of banter are likely in combat AND / OR fast travelling a *lot*.

I'm essentially feeling that I'm otherwise not encountering the bug anymore now, woot woot!

FURTHER EDIT - Map Travel to change zones, intra-map party changes also don't cause issues. I'm withdrawing form this thread now as it's clear that I'm no longer suffering from this bug, assuming I ever did.

Playing in offline mode and cleaning out my quests and codexes has yielded some results for me. Although I still get a lot more banter in say, Emprise du Lion than I ever do in the Hinterlands, which I find somewhat odd. For my part I seem to get less banter in the lower level zones, and a lot more in the higher level ones. So far I've noticed that companions are quite chatty in Emprise du Lion and the Hissing Wastes, so that's something at least.

I doubt the patch affected your banter rate. I'm getting the same banter rate as I did pre-patch (about 1 random banter for every 2 hours of exploring).

For what it's worth, the patch noticeably improved the graphic quality in my game. Especially in battle, post-patch the animations are much more smooth. I didn't even realize how jittery combat was for me until the patch improved it.

Same here, no reason to spend all those hours on a broken bugged game. I'll just wait till patch 3 which hopefully will fix the game.

Played for 1:30-2 hours on new patch with new computer and got 3 banters. 2 between solas and Cassandra and 1 between solas and varric. I also got a ton of intermittent dialogue relating to all the stuff you see for the first time (astrariums, location dialogue, etc). I think it is working correctly. Heard my first ever Solas banter...<3.

No, this is a way of explaining how the system works for the people who have been asking. Also, because of the chance element involved in banter firing, it's letting people know that it's normal to hear more banter at some points, and less at others, but it should average out over the course of a playthrough (barring the factors like combat and riding mounts that prevent banter). Likewise, it lets people know that it's perfectly normal that they are not hearing banter or music in Val Royeaux.

The post also mentions not only that we're still looking into this, but also that we are looking at ways to provide a more even experience. This is reiterated in this post about upcoming patch notes.

I hope this isn't the only way the banter bug is being addressed. It seems like something is actively preventing banter from working for some, and for those users who never experience banter, increasing the odds of it firing won't help (Zero times any increase is still zero after all).

That's what i've been saying. I made a new save file and have literally not seen a single line of banter in that file. And the other... Well I see it every 4 hours or so. Maybe.

I've been getting more and more banter lately myself. One of the things that *seems* to work for me, is always updating the entries for codex, inventory and missions. But no choice ones so far.

I'm on PS4, just started a new playthrough. The first one was 60+ hours, and eerily silent. Now I'm seven hours in the new playthrough, just recruited the mages, and my characters have said three exact lines of banter since the beginning. Very depressing. The only thing the patch fixed for me is the music, now it works exactly like they said it should be. But I'd rather have them talking, to be honest.

I keep cleaning codex/inventory/quests but to no avail. Tomorrow I'll try playing offline and see if anything changes, otherwise I'll just shelf it and wait for the next two patches before touching this game again.

So about this banter bug, can anyone give me their thoughts on a few questions I've had about it?  First, for everyone here posting their impressions (either no change in banter or hearing more) since the new patch, have you just resumed a previous save or started a new game?  I am very curious if you resume your old save, is it possible to encounter all of the banter that previously never fired, kind of like a backlog?  Or is too late and the chance to hear them is gone?

On my current game, I am about 40 hrs in, and I've shelved it for now as I'd prefer to resume when the issue has been fixed.  However, I am now debating whether I am better off restarting to maximise the chances of getting all the missed content or simply resuming.  Unfortunately, the details Bioware released about banter reads somewhat vaguely with no definitive answers.

Saw someone earlier post that they had success by turning the graphics settings to automatic. I tried it because what the hell. I took the same party that i had 0 banter with in the Storms Coast to the hinterlands and they had 3 banters in 30 minutes or so, which is by far the most success I've had with any fix (sad i know). Don't knowwww if it works for anyone other than us two but thought i'd let you guys know.

I set the graphics to automatic and restarted the game. My journal wasn't cleaned out.

edit: 4 in 35 minutes...by far most successful fix i've done.

edit: I finished and got 6 in about an hour. 2 between sera vivienne, 1 between IB and sera, and 3 between IB and viv.

I've done both. Zero banter since new patch.
