Just as a further note: there is definitely also a repeat bug, despite what the devs say.

I've just had a certain convo about whether Dorian feels good about a bet with Varric regarding whether or not we will beat [The Elder One] for the fourth time in a single run-through.

What's even more annoying/amusing is that, um, Dorian's already lost that bet. This is post-endgame. /sigheth

Apparently he still feels good about his chances, though.

I don't think the devs ever said it doesn't exist...just a massively higher percentage of people are getting almost no banter as opposed to repeat banter. Which makes sense, since you have to have actually had some banter to get to the part where it is repeating.

I've absolutely had repeat banters (though Varric does seem to actually try to play I spy with Cass multiple times).

I've also had banters in every region. Especially the Hissing Wastes, at least with IB and Varric. No one map has been a dead zone entirely but the banter feels rare - maybe triggring once every 45 minutes, and then occasionally going nuts (2-3 in a row). Changing up my party a lot might help.

Yeah, repeat banters are definitely a thing. Viv and Dorian's discussion about what they'll say about Corypheus (That he's Tevinter) has repeated so often for me I dream about it. Anyway, any updates? Is Bioware still pretending like everything's kosher? Because it's not, it's really not. I'm holding off on a second playthrough until something  is done about this.

Recent weirdness: I had a group in the Emerald Graves that would talk everytime I walked to that mansion from the camp on the ridge northish from it (I'd slide down the mountain/hill thing to get there), I don't remember the group's composition but it seemed like one of the good old day's banter triggers so I figured I'd switch the group up a bit so I'd get caught up on the banters but no. It immediately stopped working. My companions also almost never speak in deserty places. I dunno, maybe they don't want sand in their mouths. But seriously. Braving the entirety of the Hissing Wastes with only one banter is beyond lonely.

I don't feel like they ever denied something was wrong for players, just that they couldn't figure out the bug that was causing it. Hopefully we'll see something post holidays, because they are due to increase the coin flippage to see if that helps people.

I have good days and bad days. In the afternoon, I banter like crazy, evenings I don't get a peep. Next time I have a good run, im leaving my PC on :-/

I couldn't help but notice this thread and I might be able to offer an explanation.  Perhaps the party members are aware (A.I.) that they're trapped inside of this horrific game and have decided to remain mostly silent.  If one doesn't have anything good to say (about this game), then....wait, that's me included...(tapes mouth shut and jumps out the window)----->

I started getting a bunch on my new character. I already liked the game, but it's SO much more enjoyable with banter. I'm sad I didn't get any on my original character.

Though, for that character I have yet to ride a horse or even do that quest so maybe that's it. Have there been any updates on if they increased the banter change or not? I feel like that's a pretty easy stopgap and should not be hard to communicate...

I do QA for a small software company, and after getting into QA mode with DA:I, I came to the conclusion it absolutely is something to do with completing quests. Possibly a bad close on the play completed quest sound command. Since banter is not supposed to happen when game mechanic sounds play (combat etc), as long as the game thinks the completed quest sound is playing banter will not trigger. I've found every time check all my completed quests so there's no gold mark by any, I'll get banter till I complete another quest, and then it goes quiet again.

I played for almost 40 hours before I found someone's suggestion to check off all completed quests and had zero banter till I did that. Then I immediately had a bunch till I completed another quest and then bam, none for a few hours till I again checked off all completed quests. I've been able to repeat this over and over since then.

I've also had repeated banter as well once they got going, maybe because they'd been kept mute for the first 40 hours? heh.

^^^ Good suggestion(s) and sound thought processing.  Maybe Bioware should hire you.  At the very least this sort of clue might give the trained chimps at Bioware an idea on where to start looking for this one particular solution.  Soooo....how are you at fixing PC-specific M+KB controls?  Any work on user interfaces?  Bioware needs help and EA won't give them the money.....at least that's the latest rumor that I just made up...

This sounds like a very plausible hypothesis. I have yet to run into the banter bug, but the number of people who seem to experience it is certainly worrying. Banter is such a big part of the game experience. I hope this suggestion will be tested.

To some extent there would be logic in this. Finishing quests would be a sort of a marker of the players progression through the content. And it wouldn't be unreasonable to trigger a greater likelihood of banter the farther a player actually progresses through the game.

Though the theory about quest finishing sound being the culprit seems also possible. Banter does get easily affected by various other sounds and dialogues.

Have there been any updates on if they increased the banter change or not? I feel like that's a pretty easy stopgap and should not be hard to communicate...

The thing is, there isn't a specific, easy to narrow down issue with banter frequency. Most people have no problems, and banter triggers quite often without noticeable issues. For others that seems to not be the case.

Increasing banter frequency wouldn't really solve the issue if there is a bug in the code that doesn't properly activate said banter in the first place.

Party banter seems to be tied to spots on the map

There are undoubtebly certain spots that trigger specific banters, yes. However I haven't run across any spot on any maps that trigger guaranteed random banters. With the open world state of the maps, that wouldn't be a particularly logical approach to take - it would deprive some players of a lot of banter just because they decide to take the paths less traveled and obvious.

My character is an archer so Varric and Sera have been benched for the most part. I heard Sera has funny banter so I took her, Viv and Cass out to harvest in Hinterlands. Not a peep from any of them. I've had banter with other charactets fairly often.

Hinterlands is a wonky place for banter. Try Storm Coast. That place always seemed to give me some reliable banters.

The banter system is also designed to work over the course of a 150+ hour experience, so don’t be surprised if you don’t encounter everything within the first 60 hours.

Music

Ambient music is unrelated to banter, but works in a similar fashion. ...  we chose to use music more sparingly to occasionally enhance the mood.

In areas like Skyhold and Val Royeaux, apart from bards or scripted plot-specific moments, there is likewise no music,

I have an odd issue, in the Tavern at Skyhold my bard sings, but there is no backing music.

On Youtube there's videos where the bard is clearly singing and playing music, so this is definitely a glitch.

re: banter, i've had some, but it'd be nice to know how much is "normal".  I'm only at 143 hours and 55 minutes, and you do say i should be patient until 150 - so will banter rate increase in the last 6 or so hours?

I wouldn't expect it to increase in the next 6 hours...i think he mean that the reasoning behind banter being so sparse even outside of the banter bug is that they were planning for it to span across a lengthy playthrough.

It's apparently been reported that there is up to 3 hours of banter that has been recorded.  Therefore 3 hrs = 180 mins.  Let's assume an average of 30 secs per banter (which is probably high, since most banters are probably shorter than that.).  Therefore 180 / 0.5 = 360 separate banters have been recorded.  Over an average 100 hr playthrough, that would equate to (100 x 60) / 360 = 16.6... i.e. one banter every 16 minutes on average.  Of course there are many factors impacting this so we can't just use straight maths, but still, the maths seems reasonable and reports from those without the bug say 15-20mins between banters which corroborates.

There's more than 3 hours if you look around. 5 hours and 35 minutes if you look on youtube....still, I don't disagree with what you said. Just saying he shouldn't expect it to randomly increase as he approaches 15 hours.

It's so annoying, this bug, hope they fix it soon - played 7 hours before I got my first party banter... :/ And now I can only trigger it by starting, then leaving combat. A short background music goes off every now and then and seems to be working as it should.... But it's disheartening, and really makes it rather bland to run around.

This might be totally arbitrary, but found that when my skyhold outfit stops jangling like metal on metal, my banter doesn't fire in the world. I could have unfinished quests, travel through the warroom or outside of it, but when a sound glitch as minor as that occurs, I could stand around at a camp for 10 minutes and not get a peep. They still have fighting dialogue and there's combat music, but no banter when I don't jangle. My first playthrough I never heard armor sounds, and never had banter. The first 50 hours of 2nd pt, jangled all over and and they gabbed all the time. Reinstalling the game just in case but soooo weird...

Have you got to the bit where it's revealed the Divine is a fade-touched blighted arch-deamon, kills everyone at Skyhold, and you have to finish the game as a Nug?

;)

In other news, i found someone who's uploaded all the conversations, so i might just listen to them online rather than in-game

My banter seems to be fixed, I started playing again recently and I'm suddenly getting a bunch of conversations. I even heard music in Val Royeux for the first time. (Not sure what fixed it though, maybe it was in a patch)

I'm curious though what the normal rate of music is. Because though I heard VR's music it only lasted for ten seconds or so before fading away. I've heard some people mention combat music as well, but I never hear it when wandering the wilds. Is music supposed to be playing all the time or does it normally fade in and out?

Music does normally fade in and out, but as it turns out, we're not supposed to hear music in VR or the drumgs in skyhold. They're actually bugs but are somehow tied to our banter firing. Combat music is great, but I think only works when you meet a battle that is more challenging. I've had it when I fight rifts and pride demons but not wolves, so it's not always.

Just had a great banter after fighting the dragon in crestwood, it wad so perfectly timed between dorian and solas right after it when down.

Spoiler

It was a beautiful thing althouh bull wasnt a kid in a candy store when he saw it...oh well.

and after I reinstalled the game, set my graphics to auto and my audio to "night", and removed all my saves files except for the latest, my armor started jangling again and I have banter again...phew..was about to quit playing...

I just can't bring myself to watch the youtube videos out there..too impersonal and I'd rather spontaneously be surprised and have a giggle. Hopefully everyone has some luck in the new year too!
