The hell they dont repeat, if i hear varric say "Hey Speaker, I Spy with my little eye" one more time im going to put my limited edition Witchers sword though my monitor.
I've done some testing of my own.
Based on race/sex
Dwarf Male- Banter almost non existant, reuses same lines in a row, see above.
Qunari Male- Party wont shut up there always Yamerin about something or another, doesnt repeat unless you change area's.
Elf Female- Occasional banter more than dwarf, less than human and qunari. Repeats lines same as dwarf.
Human Male- Frequent banter not as much as Qunari, doesnt repeat unless you change area's.
Dwarf is the only race i've put alot of time into, but all the rest have at least 4 hours of time put into them.

i only play as qunari and all four of my files have had the banter bug. i'm almost certain it doesn't revolve around race/sex.

I've done all the things listed. Once I added new companions I would play with them, and explore new areas to see how they are in battle. I never use the mounts, I do progress the story quite frequently and I even try to trigger banter by going to new places. Like I tried to trigger banter in the Storm Coast by going to the beach but no dice. And I only play with subtitles on. This makes me really sad that you guys are thinking it's the players being dramatic or impatient. I hope you guys find the reason for the bug.

Role another race, you can tell about 30 minutes in once you hit the hinterlands. Perhaps its opposite of mine? try rolling a dwarf.

My PC is a dwarf and still no go.
I've put together a list based on feedback in the thread, and this is what I've come up with. This is all the things players have tried in testing for this error and most do not work except where noted:
- Switching party members
- Staying on foot
- Exploring new areas
- Doing different quests
- Progressing with the plot
- Doing a lot of War Table missions
- Talking to everyone while at Haven/Skyhold
- Waiting to get the mount quest done
- Doing the mount quest as soon as it's available
- Going straight to the Hinterlands from Haven on the crit path without talking to anyone
- Reinstalling the game
- Reinstalling the game after a clean boot
- Repairing the game via Origin
- Disabling Auto-save
- Disabling Origin overlay
- Disabling cloud saves
- Changing audio settings (like TV to Night and has reported some limited short-term success)
- Turning on subtitles
- Avoiding combat, just staying at camp
- Playing the game normally (i.e no being idle for the sake of testing for banter)
- Changing difficulty level
- Created a new world state for import
- Using the depressing default world state
- Zoning in and out of an area (like Haven to Hinterlands back to Haven back to the Hinterlands)
- Using the quicksave as little as possible
- Not having many characters
- Have the latest drivers/updates for those of us that are PC
- Avoiding some quests (some folks have reported losing banter after smashing the first red lyrium crystal, for instance)
- Making sure that the voice sound was all the way up
- Had our save files tested, either by folks like Murloc Knight or by Allan
- Unchecking our journal/codex entries. Basically, marking everything as read. There has been some success with this, but posters are currently monitoring to see if will slip back into silence like it did with the other "fixes."
- For PC users, changing our installation drives from regular to SSD or vice versa. A very few have reported results, but that won't help the console folks.
- Fast travel to camp, mount, dismount and rest. There has been some reporting limited success, though it doesn't last if you exit the game. Usually, there is two-three banters at the most before slipping back into literally 3 or more hours of total silence and barely looping music.
- Unplugging the console or the PC from the network before playing game to ensure no online communication is done.
- Reloading a single save file several times until banter is heard. In one case, they reloaded a Hinterlands save until they heard music within a few seconds, then wandered, and heard banter. For some posters no music = no banter, seemingly. Note that the effect did not last.
I wanted to add that short term success in this case means that there is perhaps one to three banters in a fairly short amount of time (within 45 minutes) before it goes back to 3 or more hours of silence. Or that it seems to work until the player exits out of their game and then has to repeat the "trick." On our end, we're still testing various gender/class/race makeups, being on or offline, as well as with our party makeup.

Did they update this? I swear, today alone, I've gotten more banter than I have in the past few days.
Not according to some of the other posters in the thread, but I haven't seen any sort of patch or update myself. I will be playing later tonight though, so I can let you know.

I found this on neogaf.
So after my latest hard lock, I noticed in the task manager that RealTek Audio manager is using over 1 GB of ram.
Could this be directly related to the audio bugs and freezing during conversations? -ThoseDeafMutes
Maybe this is related?

This makes no sense. No sense.
You're saying fewer than 15 banters in TOTAL so far in a 60+ hour playthrough is working as intended? I barely know what the characters think of each other! I switched party members all the time, and some of them never talked to each other once!
Some people have had 90+ hour playthroughs with even fewer banters than me.
EDIT:
I think, for the sake of our sanity, it would help if you told us how frequently the banters are actually meant to fire. People are trying to test this for you, and they're doing it in the dark.

I don't know. It might be the causing errors leading to no banter, banter repeating and music cutting off. I have gotten the feeling that this game has problems with holding information. For example, I have read people suggest to turn the PS4 off instead of using rest mode and someone else said to clear the journal for party banter. I'm not much of a computer person but I think it would be worth looking at.

if you are truly committed to fixing this bug yet you can't recreate it to make a proper study (which is understandable) i suggest that you contact players who suffer from this issue & who live near your studio and actually go to their place of residence and try the game on their hardware, and conduct a research from there
just a thought, i know it's a lot of work but we deserve it.. don't we?

Switch up party members: There is a limitation on the amount of banter between characters, and it is possible to exhaust it over the course of a playthrough, especially with a static group of followers.
Explore on foot: Banter will not fire while the player is mounted or in combat, so stop to smell the roses (or pick the elfroot) from time to time.
Complete missions and talk to followers: some banter is tied to your progression through the main story (you wouldn’t want Sera spoiling the plot for you, would you?). Playing through the main story and learning more about your companions will unlock more banter.
Visit new places: Similar to party members, it’s possible to exhaust the banter for an area. It’s a great wide world out there, so go exploring.
Turn on subtitles: If you are concerned there might be something wrong with your sound system, turning on subtitles will help you identify if you’re hearing the banter as it occurs.
Please also note that banter does not recycle, so you will only hear a set of lines once. The rate at which it occurs is also random, which is why sometimes you will encounter it more frequently, and sometimes less so.
The banter system is also designed to work over the course of a 150+ hour experience, so don’t be surprised if you don’t encounter everything within the first 60 hours. We wanted to give players plenty of reasons to keep coming back to Dragon Age: Inquisition, and this is one of them.
We will continue to investigate further, as we know that our characters are a much beloved and key component of BioWare games.
Firstly, thank you for looking into this issue and for continuing to do so for those of us who are certain there is an issue. While some of us may be playing in a way that creates a perception of no banter, I feel there is some issue at work for many of us.
As to your suggestions:
1. I presume you mean that party members can have banter run out as they are set to not repeat banter and likely have banter that is locked until certain events or conditions (specific quests completed etc). As I do frequently switch my party members (in an effort to hear interesting exchanges and learn about them), I do so even more often at present to see if anyone will talk to certain characters. This is further assisted by watching my wife play, as she has her own preferences for who she wishes to learn about and we actively alter who travels with us to a new location. This also means that sometimes I see my wife get a banter that I have never heard (despite being further in the game and having traveled more with those same characters, like Dorian and Varric who I have yet to hear anything from or Varric and The Iron Bull).
2. I do exclusively explore on foot, and always have making this a non-issue. More importantly, I have actually had at least 4 instances of banter triggering at the start of combat (yes I am certain, as trying to pay attention to banter while in combat was frustrating and this happened recently, with many more instances of it immediately following combat. I have also never heard any combat dialogue (low health/killing blow/being on fire/etc). I have observed the same issues in my wife's game.
3. I do complete missions and talk to followers, to my knowledge most of those who no longer do so are becoming aware of banter they have never heard.
4. Just as before, I do visit new places. Often in hopes of hearing new banter.
5. I have had subtitles on since before I hit new game the first time. I learned my lesson in DAO to use subtitles in case noise gets in the way of trying to hear banter.
I have heard some banter, but I have also heard enough sound glitches and dead silence to feel that something is off (perhaps it was design decisions, like if banter is impossible in Val Royeaux and it is meant to have only footsteps and overheard npc dialogue without the hushed crowd or music...but I'd like to think after all the DA2 complaints of the city feeling dead we wouldn't be given a dead marketplace in the capital of Orlais).
In case it is useful, my wife and I play the Xbox 360 Deluxe Edition of the game. Again, thank you for looking into this issue.

Yikes. I didn't think this was going to be an easy fix, but hopefully something will come to light soon. Myself, I've had very few banters at almost 50+ hours. I've never even heard Iron Bull, Blackwall or Vivienne banter with anyone, even though I try to take them out frequently. Maybe I should re-roll another a character and see if I have more success (*sobs* at the thought of doing everything all over again).

Ok...
You say that, then can you give us a rough estimation as to how often we should be experiencing the banter?
Was it really designed so that we potentially even within an hour or more of playing?
What about the music that doesn't occur in areas? I'm not talking about it coming and then fading out, I mean not coming at all like in Val R.

Everything is working fine for me. Playing on Xbox One. Music all the time and party banter every twenty minutes or so. Varric is a veritable chatter box! Sera is hilarious with her combat shouts!
If the other platforms are having issues, hope it gets fixed for you Gus soon.
Happy for you, as much as I can be.
What's your music situation in Val Royeaux? Do you get music + banter there?
