Reporting back in with news of success!

I am not sure what did it, as I haven't changed a lot but banter is working for me now. I get a scenery comment/banter ever 7-15 minutes.

Here's what I did/do after reinstalling the game earlier:

  1. Always use the war table to travel anywhere from Skyhold/Haven
  2. Use map exits (On maps that have them) to travel rather than the world map.
  3. Activated subtitles (IDK if that helped, I'm just listing everything I did)
  4. Lotsa running around to harvest mats (NO MOUNTS)
  5. No quick travel (I never liked it anyway)
  6. Switching out party members every 2-3 hours or so
  7. Sometimes "parking" the party for a few minutes for everything to settle (I use that time for smoking breaks) and no, banters don't just occur then
  8. I do not keep many active saves (I have named folders for my characters where I store the ones I'm not actively using & it IS fairly easy to separate them)

Combat does not seem to reset the timers because I've had banters right after closing rifts. I've been traveling around in the Hinterlands and Storm Coast for this test, it also worked there after discovering Skyhold.

This worked for about 15 hours of playing. Will test some more during my next WE and report back in if any changes occur.

So I have to ask: are we just a vocal minority now with this issue? Did most people get fixed? Just seems unlikely they'll pool more resources into this issue sine they've "addressed" it :(

I already do all of this.  As a matter of fact I wanted to come and ask if theres an easier way to exit to the world map as I always fast travel to the camp nearest the exit and then run there.  I almost never use mounts.  Subs are on.  If war table travel is an option (after unlocking a new area) I always use it.

I still have yet to experience banter every "7-15 minutes" as you claimed.  I'll have more time to test this weekend but right now, my best banter moments are between Dagna and the human guy as whenever I enter the Undercroft I am guaranteed at least one exchange.

I'm sorry, I didn't claim that what I did is a universal fix. Maybe I just lucked out. I just shared what I did prior to the banter frequency stabilizing itself because I hoped it might help others who were affected by this issue. (As I was)

the banter still isn't fixed yet, right?

did bioware say anything new about the issue? like acknowledging that the problem still persists?

i so want to play the full game, feeling that sense of camaraderie i missed in my first playthrough

Saving and loading seems to be a banter killer in the latest patch for me. If I don't need to reload in an area, banter usually starts firing regularly after the first time (it seems to take a bit longer for that first one). But if I reload a lot (which I almost always do), I've noticed it's possible to go an extremely long time without hearing banter. I'm not sure if that matches anybody else's experiences.

My suggestion would be to avoid reloading a lot in an area when you want to hear banter. Combat doesn't seem to have any effect, nor do any other exploration activities (some can block banter for a short while, but it shouldn't really have too much of an effect on the timing).

Static barks like that are not part of the banter system.

Banter is exclusively things that the active party says randomly while out in the world.

About the same here since my last post.

Then today I had to wait around 30minutes again for banter to occur regulary after loading. Can't quite put the finger on what reset the timer (if timer there is, this thing is driving me nuts.

I have not heard anyone in any of the banter threads say that the problem has been fixed by the patch. It’s possible they are just happily playing the game now and not reporting back—or that I’ve missed it—but you’d think at least someone would have said something, no?

No its good advice, I've been doing most of the stuff but it can stil be pretty random.  I just spent about an hour at the Hissing Wastes map, and I had two banters, both were right after combat.  I'm doing side quests so not sure if progression makes a difference.  Also watch out for the Requisition Officer, especially if you fast travel between camps.  She will get right in your face and interrupt any conversations to put forth her requests.

"you wouldn’t want Sera spoiling the plot for you, would you?"
Funny you'd mention that.. during my 3rd playthrough now, when i was going up in the hinterlands to get blackwall (Before Corry was introduced into the story) There were red templars near the lake (For reasons i don't know since they shoulden't excist yet in the story) and when i killed them iron bull said "I Wonder why Corry (yes i can't spell his name so i name him corry) Would send red templars all the way up here"

So Just wondering why you have the game spoil itself By triggering a companion dialogue on something he shoulden't know about yet

Not hearing any banter at all.

This is very sad.

Only had 3 banter in the Hinterlands in the last three hours. I don't think creating a new char helped me, but I'm still hoping for the best.

If you're in the habit of doing optional quests before main ones, like me and a lot of old RPG gamers (for 'fear' of losing something when you progress through the plot), you stumble into this kind of things a lot in DAI.

Not just banter.

And then the story doesn't makes much sense anymore, plus 'autospoils' like you pointed out.

I was having the same problem with suddenly no banter after patch 3, then yesterday I went to the hissing wastes and decided to switch Varric for Sera and suddenly they couldn't shut up! Didn't change anything else, no fancy traveling, no completed quests ticking.

I re-installed after patch3, started a new character. Everything was fine; for the first time I heard regular party banter in rather regular intervalls for roughly 25h.

Then....

Skyhold...

haven't heard anything except one banter in 5h now.... maybe Skyhold messes things up big time? Not looking forward to spending the next 60h talking to myself only... :(

My banter hadn't improved at all over the 7 characters I played. I have just had a run through of DA2 and the banter there was really regular and very enjoyable. Its made me really appreciate DA2 more than I had previously.

DAI is really quiet for the banter for me, maybe I notice 3 or 4 conversations on a two hour map exploration. (if I'm lucky)

There is not supposed to be banter or music in Val Royeaux

I get the background music that is used in Emerald Graves/Winter Palace when I first arrive in Val Royeaux.

I see that alot of you are getting big issues again after skyhold, i had the same problem, it was fine the 40-ish hours before. Here's one thing to keep in mind:

Unread War Table missions may have the same effect as unread Quests and Codex entries

I'm back to decent banter atm (took a bit tho i think), after unchecking those and keeping up some other blood magic. Here's what i do

Spoiler

Btw, is anybody else always getting armor sounds after cutscenes in Skyhold, but as soon as you travel somewhere else it's gone again?

Just curious, are most people who are still experiencing the banter bug playing on PC? I had it on my first character on PS4, but after deleting and starting over I've never been affected by it again, despite backing out of the War Table, traveling from the World Map, playing while connected to Origin, using mounts, loading from manual saves, and all the other little things I've seen some people say you're not supposed to do if you want to avoid the bug. I suspect a lot of the "fixes" people have come up with only seem to be working because the actual mechanic that's keeping them from hearing the banter is even more random and inscrutable.

Even still, it can be wildly inconsistent -- there are times when I'll get four banters in a row if I haven't used a certain group of characters together in a while, and others when they'll fall silent forever unless I rest at camp and idle for a while. So something's definitely screwy with the internal timer. Combat doesn't completely freeze banter for me, but when I finish a long fight characters will usually start chattering like they've been biting their tongues the whole time. Certain maps also tend to produce more banter (no one will shut up on the Storm Coast, for instance), perhaps because they have fewer elements that reset the clock.

I also have this issue. Banter went from infrequent to none post patch 3. Just wanted to add my voice. Thanks.

Strange thing I noticed: I seem to be having normal banter in some areas.  Things seem to be ok, with 10~15 mins between banters in Hinterlands, Emprise du Lion, and the Hissing Wastes  :?

In my 3 playthrough never had armour sound. Didn't even know we should have; (

And if it is really true, that war table missions must be checked read.....that is just infuriating. After the little yellow dots gone, I need to check EVERY single mission one by one, which one is finished and which is not.
I am not willing to do that.
