To be perfectly clear: as I said, we are still looking into this and conducting further testing.

I am providing you with an update on what we have found so far, as well as some general best practices. This doesn't mean that we are not taking your concerns seriously or that we are not looking into this.

This is an update on what we have found to date on an issue we know is near and dear to our community.

I'm sorry if there was any confusion, but please do not misconstrue my message as a dismissal of what you've been telling us.

No problems mate, it's very hard to convey tone over text. I thought your post made sense and it's not like the investigation is closed. Thankyou for your efforts <3

i have more than 160 hours logged on Origin with DAI. I learned via the forums that there's supposedly background music while exploring, as well as party banter.

OP's "advice" is like walking up on a car accident, with people laying there dying, and saying they should probably stop the bleeding and not die, and then walking away.

My first play-through was 62hrs long. I had 1 banter, Blackwall & Varric at around 55 hrs. I didn't know banter was even in the game until that moment, I figured you'd gone the way of Skyrim, 'good place to set up camp' and a few main quest things only. I rode a mount only to quickly turn in quests because I fashion crafted too much to want to use the mounts. All of the suggested was done frequently.

My second play-through I get banter every 15mins or so.  I've had more banter in half an hour than in an entire game. Even riding a mount most of the time I am still getting more. The first play-though was incredibly boring without banter. I had that first banter between Blackwall and Varric within mins of them being in group together, not hours into mining a zone.

The only thing that is different about the game aside from date/time is that when Solas asked me a question about being a Dalish before exiting the prologue I answered, where as before I did not. Before I even reached the Temple I'd had more chatting than my previous game. Otherwise I rolled nearly identical.

I'm unsure if it's been reported or not, but it is said that banter between party members does not repeat, as in not the same banter, but I've heard numerous conversations between Varric, Cassandra, and Solas multiple times.

I rerolled with a few different combinations with no success.

Edit: This report just came in:

This is a scary thought. That I am not just never hearing banter but that I am actually missing it. I'm not going to start over but I'll be pissed.

Yep. I mentioned this in the other thread, but the one and only time I've gotten a party banter so far (about 13 hours into the game) was when I loaded a save at the crossroads in the Hinterlands and Viv and Cass were already in the middle of an exchange I never heard the beginning of. Otherwise, dead silence all around.

Honestly, looking into this must take legitimate hours upon hours... So thank you BioWare, for essentially slaving away to address our concerns.

Hey! Do you get music walking around Val Royeaux and do you get music when you have a combat encounter? I don't get music in Val R. but I don't get combat music with open world encounter fights either, just wonder if that's normal. I know Val R has music for some people.

I know right, I work in video production and I HATE having to find some after effects glitch that's causing an effect to look wrong, I can't imagine how much effort and dedication it takes for them to craft this game and then bugfix it.  <3 Champions.

I think that they will eventually find a solution because the team has worked so hard on that content it would be a shame for players to miss.

Omg.  Same here.  Your post made me realize that the only time my banter worked was when I talked to Solas about the Dalish.

I get it in val royeaux and in combat encounters but the volume is pretty low for all the music in the game

The amount of Banter I collected myself and from others and put down into my thread detailing it was staggering, there is no way people are exhausting it all in 25-40 hours I just finished a 90 hour game and still have yet to experience all the Banter. Others are playing 2-3 hours with no banter at all if I dismount and wander for that time period on foot I get 6-7 conversations.

This feels a lot like a snub from where I sit and it's not even an issue for me.

Does anyone know how many banters are between each character, exactly?

Solas never seems to shut up and I consistently have him chatting up other companions, but the rest of them are dead quiet to each other. Varric and Cassandra just don't talk, Sera and Blackwall have made a few jokes, but otherwise, total radio silence even after running around on foot for hours on end with several diverse party combinations.

A few tips for people that I've noticed is that banters trigger immediately after fast traveling between camps--sometimes I miss the first part of it because it starts before the game has loaded, but it triggers.

EDIT: I realized I just started droning on, the reason I'm wondering is because the few conversations I've gotten between characters like Dorian and Solas make it seem like they're not interested in speaking at all.

Please also note that banter does not recycle, so you will only hear a set of lines once. The rate at which it occurs is also random, which is why sometimes you will encounter it more frequently, and sometimes less so.

I've had Varric ask Solas about the nobles' reactions at the ball over a dozen times in the same area, without any other banter occurring inbetween.  I don't have a silence problem, but there is definitely repetition going on.

My first playthrough has about 60 hours and I got maybe 12 banters through the whole game (as well as no music most of the time outside cutscenes) I switch up my party every few hours and never use a mount. I've probably used a mount 20 minutes total in the course of 60 hours because I really really wanted to hear the party banters that I loved so much from previous games. :( With no music and no companions talking and very few NPCs who will talk to you, the world feels really lonely :crying:

@Booty i have a list of banters here there are probably 3-5 for each conversation between characters that doesn't include the location specific stuff or the three way conversations.

I do believe you have first to fix how to "banter" with us before you can fix the companions banter....

you alone raise the storm to cat 5 with words like these

-We have conducted rigorous initial tests, all of which have shown that the system is working as intended

just a little hint: you never EVER say something is working as intended under ANY circumstances unless you are 100% sure you tried EVERYTHING for which then, no further tests will be needed...you should have simply said what you posted above and that's it....

We’ve heard a number of reports from users concerned about party banter not firing in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

We have conducted rigorous initial tests, all of which have shown that the system is working as intended. We ran tests over the course of several hours, and compared the captured footage of the playthrough with what the banter the game had recorded as having happened. In all instances, our game records matched the recorded play. The banter also occurred as frequently as intended.

We have also similarly investigated save files that were supplied to us by users, and these were likewise found to be working properly.

There are, however, instances that can disrupt the frequency of banter, so here are some best practices for ensuring you encounter banter out in the wilds:

Switch up party members: There is a limitation on the amount of banter between characters, and it is possible to exhaust it over the course of a playthrough, especially with a static group of followers.

Explore on foot: Banter will not fire while the player is mounted or in combat, so stop to smell the roses (or pick the elfroot) from time to time.

Complete missions and talk to followers: some banter is tied to your progression through the main story (you wouldn’t want Sera spoiling the plot for you, would you?). Playing through the main story and learning more about your companions will unlock more banter.

Visit new places: Similar to party members, it’s possible to exhaust the banter for an area. It’s a great wide world out there, so go exploring.

Turn on subtitles: If you are concerned there might be something wrong with your sound system, turning on subtitles will help you identify if you’re hearing the banter as it occurs.

Please also note that banter does not recycle, so you will only hear a set of lines once. The rate at which it occurs is also random, which is why sometimes you will encounter it more frequently, and sometimes less so.

The banter system is also designed to work over the course of a 150+ hour experience, so don’t be surprised if you don’t encounter everything within the first 60 hours. We wanted to give players plenty of reasons to keep coming back to Dragon Age: Inquisition, and this is one of them.

We will continue to investigate further, as we know that our characters are a much beloved and key component of BioWare games.

This is complete and utter BS....

This is nothing but you guys ignoring what we tell you. How the hell can you conduct a test internally that is suppose to reflect THOUSANDS of players.

That is where WE come in, you know "real world testing".

If people report that they have banter once every few hours. something is wrong, and that is over a WHOLE playthrough of 80+ hours.

Your saves that you looked at, I don't believe for a second you could tell if it was normal or not. It is clearly an issue where a script or something isn't firing off.

Where is the music in this game ?

I hear music for 30 seconds when I fast travel to a camp, the rest is dead silence.

This has been reported all over the place from disparate people on all platforms. The problem is ON YOUR end, do not pass the buck and say we are idiots (in so many words) for not hearing banter but once every few hours. Are you trying to say WE are playing the game wrong, or is it you guys made it wrong...

You say "run out of banter with characters", sure, but that would first mean you actually GET TO HEAR IT in the first place, right? unless you have 5 lines of banter per character, clearly something is wrong.

Now I know though with this public announcement that you guys either are clueless or just don't care or even KNOW how to fix it.

That location stuff is really helpful, I'll have to try it out. A couple you may have missed in general though: Cole and Bull (Cole trying to understand Bull); Solas, Sera, and Blackwall (harassment and bromance respectively with a couple of three-way conversations)

Solas, Cole, and Bull also have a few three-way conversations.

Developers accusing US for being stupid and not playing the game right, yet countless forums and gaming news sites reported this problem. You guys test it on a couple of systems in your office and then proclaim we are wrong. Are you kidding me??

I stopped playing this game and play Far Cry 4 which I planned to play after this game in waiting for a patch so I can get the proper experience and now I basically read that you DON'T CARE or accuse us of basically lying. Hence no patch is coming.

"continue to investigate". No you won't, you already established that it was our fault and that there was nothing wrong on your end and LIMITED tests.

I swear, did all the talent go out the window when the Bioware founders left?

Didn't you know? According to Bioware "you are playing the game wrong". Bioware concluded all is well in the sherwood forest.

We are all lying or just deaf or something. It works on a couple of their in-office systems.

Only anyone with ANY technical expertise know that there is something called in-office is NOT the same as real-world results.

Bioware royally pissed me off with this announcement.

Crud.

I came to the forum looking for a solution to another bug - but now I think I have this bug, too.

I'm only level 6 but I've heard 4 banters and almost no music.

Also - is there a proper place to report bugs? I have this one where my party climbs imaginary ladders when they shoot up. It's horrendous. :P (But it has only happened in one battle - but it's bad enough so that I can't progress.)
