Gah I managed to restart Firefox without saving my draft. Ack.

Anyway, I had to test some more but I hope I can stop this compulsion and finally start a new game now. I tried to see how the savegames of other characters behaved and if maybe some of those were broken. I tested:

1) female elven rogue (that's the one I used before, this time I used a savegame much later in the story)

2) female human mage

3) male dwarven warrior (nightmare difficulty)

(all with the "standard" voice for the respective race) (and all testing done with KB+M)

 

All of them behaved as expected. I didn't do any in-depth testing - basically I only loaded up the savegame, approached the Requisition Officer, got into combat, idled around, sometimes jumped to a second region. The timer behaved as expected and never once broke resetted. It counted down happily, regardless of what was happening in the game.

 

Bonus: Tests in Western Approach (with the Warrior)

Party: Cassandra/Dorian/Vivienne. I got banter between Cass+Vivienne!!! This is the first time I got banter in WA, EVER. I loaded a savegame where the party was already in WA, then traveled to a camp. While it was loading, they started talking. However, I couldn't get them to talk with Num1 again at all. I also couldn't get Sera/Cassandra/Vivienne, Varric/Cassandra/Vivienne, Cole/Cass/Viv, Blackwall/Cass/Viv, Solas/Cass/Vic or IB/Cass/Viv to talk, again, at all.

 

This concludes my experiments. Conclusion: I most likey never had the "bug". A lack of banter was most likely the result of "banter breaking" behaviour on my part (i.e. dialogue, traveling between zones), which - I assume - works as Bioware intended it to. An exception to this is The WA. It is obvious that there is something broken there and it seems more complicated than simply having set WA as a non banter zone. Apologies to everyone I doubted when they said they got banter there - I believe you now. If I were Bioware and if I wanted to really look into why banter seems to be broken for some people, I'd start with the question why banter in the WA is so broken.

 

I'll go and start a new game now and I'll make heavy use of the mod, which is a godsend since I don't need to worry about banter anymore. No more testing, just enjoying the game. I hope!

You can rebind the hotkey if you can't use the num pad.

 

THis might be a retarded question, but is there some special key you have to use to activate the number pad? I had to rebind the CE because none of my number pad keys activated despite posting teh number if i typed it into google or something.

The key to activate the numpad is the one above num 7,  called NUMLK on my keyboard.

I hate you. She´s hilarious and my Inky´s romance. And mine. Lol just kidding. But she has the most crazy dialogues with the other companions. I know she is annoying and her voice is so... ugh. But she grows on you, trust me. Well, thats her IMHO.

In case anyone is wondering about the efficacy of the CE Banter script, it works .  I went to the Hinterlands and every time I hit the banter key, I received banter.  Thank you so much to the modders and their incredible work.  However, it doesn't restore banter to the so-called "deadzones" where banter notably never occurs.  For me, this is prevalent in the Western Approach.  No matter how much I mashed the banter key, nothing broke the silence.  Still, this is a huge development for this ridiculous banter bug and a much deserved slap in the face to Bioware who have remained silent on this issue.

 

Leave it to the modders and their ingenuity to pick up the slack and fix the bugs the developers' ineptitude prevents them from doing.  Kudos to them.

I would try CE however it seems to installs rather dubious software.... and if it is that search engine "MySearch" then I'll wait for the official patch for banter (which will more then likely never be) or just give up on the game completely (unfortunate)... as TW3 and PoE are out soon and this game will become a foot note for me. Any way, glad some of you are getting some mileage from CE

I have the banter bug and it is annoying as hell but calling the BW staff lazy or saying they need a slap in the face is going too far. If it weren't for their "laziness", you wouldn't even have a game to get worked up about. I'm sure they could have implemented a banter trigger hotkey that works the same way as the CE workaround but it is just that - a workaround. I'm grateful it exists but it doesn't solve the problem of banter not firing naturally. If they had released this as a "fix"  in a patch, people would be screaming bloody murder that 1) it doesn't work in the WA and 2) that players shouldn't have to manually trigger banter because it breaks immersion.

To each his/her own. Nothing says we have to have her in our game, or that we can't have her. That's the beauty of the recruitment system, we can choose to have most companions or not.

 

I finally got ONE comment out of Bull in WA "I don't take any job that might turn out like this." Once jsut after loading in to the Pass Camp, even with CE Banter on full time, no one said anything else for two hours in WA (Had cleared Hinterlands and Crestwood is all before WA Did not use CE banter in those two zones.) WA definitely has a banter problem or, a conflict with a very common process, perhaps iTunes, Norton Internet Security, Some part of Nvidia services?

Even Google's own Chrome browser comes with a toolbar that wants you to install, same with Microsoft and Bing.  Many free software come with something extra nowadays, you just need to pay attention before clicking Next or "I agree".

You are right, of course but I still have trust issues. Thee are some rather dubious programs CE wants to install. I don´t want to f*** up my gaming PC once again.

Seriously, just don't click agree and skip them. That's what I (and many others) did and I have a nice clean CE only install which gives me banter and so many other game saving options. They aren't trying to mess up your PC.

Well, they are. Otherwise they wouldn’t include them. They do offer a way to (probably) avoid them, though.

Or don't download the auto installer version. CE is fine, like many I just don't like the extra stuff so, don't use the auto installer that comes with that stuff.

A. You aren't give a choice whether to not install or to install.

B. There is only the auto installer available from the official site.

C. hell you need a malware remover because of the app/s from this product

D. If I could get a legit version from a clean site I would, but no way will I download it from doggy brothers ru.

"If you aren't having problems then good luck to, enjoy the mod" ... but if there are others sitting on the fence, they should know that an app that installs malware is not the best solution... unless you are prepared to accept the results. Also it's the internet and trust issues come with the territory, unless your foolish.

Is that not the official site? Fourth paragraph has a link to a non-auto install version. I have Norton 360 updated on my machine and I did Norton File insight on the files. Tens of thousands of users have used them.

I agre, it is amazing under CE with banter always on. So much to hear, and, even when it repeats, that beats silence. And there are a ton of laughs to be had. I love the whole questions thing with Dorian and Cole, the chess game with Solas and Iron Bull, the near lovers spat with blackwall and Cassandra, Viv complimenting Cass, Varrics remarks, all of it is great, just need to hear more but CE takes care of it.

Mind telling me what CE stands for? For the life of me I'm trying to fix this bug and your answer seems to be it. Is this a mod?

Cheat Engine. Used for cheating in single player video games. God mode...infinite money..etc. People have now enabled it to trigger banters for Dragon Age. I haven't used it yet...but Its severely tempting me to do another playthrough.
