Mind telling me what CE stands for? For the life of me I'm trying to fix this bug and your answer seems to be it. Is this a mod?
CE = Cheat Engine. It's a small program which you can use with many different games.

Cheat Engine. Used for cheating in single player video games. God mode...infinite money..etc. People have now enabled it to trigger banters for Dragon Age. I haven't used it yet...but Its severely tempting me to do another playthrough.
You won't be disappointed....
This annoying bug deprives us from some good deal of funny moments. Some conversations are just hilarious with great voice acting.
EDIT: I don't know what's the situation in the WA, but I managed to get some banters there with the cheat engine.... 80% the banters wouldn't trigger but in some situations they started talking. Is the area bugged or it was designed as a no banter zone ?
- Download DAI CLI Save Editor + DAISaveChunkEditor
- back up your save games
- make a copy of your original save and put both programms + the save into the same folder
- drag & drop the save onto the das.editor
- enter Option 1 - Export values to file and hit ok/enter on your keyboard
- open the DAISaveChunkEditor and browse for [filename].DASFACE
- then I edited the Lip Shine from 0.500 to 0.000 and saved the file
- drag & drop the SAME save as before onto the das.editor
- enter Option 2 - import values from file and hit ok/enter on your KB
- enter the [filename].DASFACE name without the .DASFACE (i.e. if you file name is DAI1.DASFACE all you need to enter is DAI1)
- now you get a new save file named [filename].DAS.NEW
- delete the .NEW and copy and paste the save game into your DAI savegame folder and overwrite your old save game with it
Off topic but could this method/something similar be used to import faces across saves? Like if I made a really great looking character but rerolled and can't get the face right could I use this to get the same face?

The current tool doesn't have that functionality. You can only change colours AFAIK. The guys over at DAI Tools Forums are looking into it though. Save game editing is just a matter of time.
Wow!! I use CE in Western Approach and Finally I got a lot of bunter in the area!
Okay, for those getting banter in WA, who is in your party?
I have gone with Iron Bull, Varric, Solas, Dorian, Cole and, Vivienne in random combinations and, got at most an environmental remark form Bull is all for at least 1 hour in WA. No real banter and that's with CE Banter always on.
Is it possible banter only works with some companions there?
After deleting all game data on my PS4 and restarting the game, I got banter in the Western Approach today for the first time. Party was Sera, Doran, and Cass. Sera fired first and then a little while later Dorian fired. Overall, I'd say I'm still not getting banter as often as I'd like (of course, given how much banter I've missed in prior games, I'd like it very often), but I do seem to be getting some even in the previously dead WA. I'll see if it lasts.
Hmm, second one I've heard say that they get banter in WA with Sera. Don't tell me she's required to get it. I'll have to go recruit her in my new game I just started today to see if that's the case.
I got banter in the WA between Dorian & Viv, Sera & Cass, Varric & Dorian and Cass & Dorian.
Edit: But I only had banter (in all my pt's) in the WA after I finished the war table mission for the Pits and near the Ritual Tower.
Just as an update to my earlier grumbles, I did a game repair (again), to test my curiosity and my banter returned sans CE (in the Hinterlands, anyhow; I haven't had time to go anywhere else yet).
If I weren't looking at Sudden Influx of Paid Work atm I'd run the thing and see if there's such a thing as "banter degradation" over game life (by which I mean, over several new games, not over the course of a single game--obviously banter lessens as you've used up more of it). I thought it was the patch that caused the problem--maybe it was. Perhaps we actually do need to "repair" after every patch or hotfix?
[ETA: I am obviously using the digital PC version and am using no mods.]
Something weird happening there, Mary Jane. Shouldn't need to repair game files so often once a game's been installed.
I want to blame Origin. Not because it's logical to do so. I just want to. ![]()

Again, Sera. I dislike her so do not recruit her, thus never have her in the WA. Is she required to get banter there?

I don't think so. I had all my WA banters (except Seras of course) without her in my party.
I really wish I could get banter properly.
(OK! Last posts in 5 forums now!)

I've noticed that without CE, Sera banter is the only one I seem to get reliably. Anywhere. She seems to be by far the chattiest companion.
I wanna share my experience on PS4 about the party banters
On my first playthrough when the game was released banters worked totally fine, one every 15-20 mn 30 mn max
It still works fine on patch 3, but with patch 4 it's totally bugged.
I've started a new game, I spend 2 hour in the hinterlands and I only had 1 banter. I've read starting a new game will help to trigger banters more often but my new playthrough proves that is not.
I hope Bioware will fix it because consol players can't use CE to trigger it.
I could have delete the patch but if I did I can't use the Keep and so my worldstates so I'm stuck with dumb compagnons ![]()
PS : sorry for my english, i'm french. Hope you'll understand what I mean.

Is that not the official site? Fourth paragraph has a link to a non-auto install version. I have Norton 360 updated on my machine and I did Norton File insight on the files. Tens of thousands of users have used them.
So...I do not understand where your coming from
They're coming from the camp of people who still want something to be angry about despite this ray of happiness being shined on us.

Finally someone with a ps4 issue!
I am on my third playthrough and I have maybe heard at least between the three is 2 hours at most of party banter! I play the majority of the game mixing up members just to see if someone will make a peep but nothing! This is such a disappointment because I remember playing Origins thinking "Gawd doesn't Shale ever shut up!?"
^ i'm too a PS4 owner and have that damned banter issue, i can't play the game knowing i'm missing one of the most important aspects for me in a bioware game: Camaraderie
i'm still waiting and hoping this will be fixed *sigh*
The bold one, i tried it and it's confirmed!! it works like a charm!!!
no matter who i bring, party banter will activate at least twice an hour or three!!
i don't what's the connections between it, but it solved the problem so far, thanks man! ![]()
Well, there are workarounds that seem to help with the banter. I've had 1 1/2 successful playthroughs (one on PS4, 1/2 on PC), where I had banter as it's supposed to be: something every 10-15 minutes, except for the Western Approach, which is bugged.
The workarounds I used were:
- keeping the journal and codex clear of "unread" (marked with a star) entries
- after traveling to a new zone, I waited for the autosave, then reloaded that autosave and played from there
- only keeping about 5 save files
- playing offline
- I never acquired the horse
I bet a lot of these don't have anything to do with banter but after I got a nice amount of banter I didn't want to stop doing them for fear of breaking things again, lol. This was also before the latest patch, which seems to have broken banter even more? If you don't want to try all of them, at least keep the journal/codex clear - pretty sure that's one workaround that actually helps.
If you're on PC, try the mod everyone is talking about here, it's your best bet - if you don't encounter the banter bug, you won't need to hit the button at all, but if you do, you have a way of jump starting it at least.
DarkAmaranth, thanks for getting into it! I agree that there are different things people talk about: the actual "banter bug" where there is next to no banter (this includes any and all comments except for scripted ones) and the people who think that only conversations between companions count as banter - the latter group might actually experience a "normal" amount of "banter" because environmental comments count as banter too (and why shouldn't they?).
Could you explain what the "various events that reset the timer before it reaches zero" are? I think people who actually have almost no banter might hitting those events more often having the chance of banter reset every time. If we could figure out what these are people could actively avoid them maybe?
Need some help here...
So I started DAI, loaded the game
Started cheat engine and added the banter.ct file
Clicked on the little computer icon and selected dai icon, but did not get asked if I want to keep the table
Went back to DAI and I hit num1 but nothing happened.
So what am I doing wrong ? Thanks in advance.
Just wanted to reply to this message few times ago, in case someone else is experiencing the same issue:
I had the same issue when following the instructions, but then I tinkered with the order: first I opened the process, and then used load for the banter file- it asks you do you want to load the Lua, and reply yes. Then it should work as intended.
On my current playthrough I stopped playing for a long time (the only functioning banter was on my previous human warrior playthrough), and then found out about this Cheat Engine option. Well now, the game is worth playing again. I am revelling in the company of chatty companions- I rather have multiple times repeating banter than no banter at all. The file I have also got rid of the ghastly pyjamas and now I am playing the game with glee. If there was a way to get rid of those pesky Skyhold drums that play at all times and have music playing for longer in the background I would be happy (often it still does not play at all).
It is a shame, that this was a fan fix and not an official one (high praise for fans however- you have my sincere gratitude), and does not apply to all platforms. I prefer my game vanilla and unmodded in terms of functionality, but unfortunately without banter the game is really a shadow of itself, and latest gamethrough in silence was a struggle. To me: CE has saved this game as I wish to play it again.
I tried traversing the plains and a person named Conal Pierse started talking to me. I was obviously worried. He said that they are working on it. I asked who they are and he disappeared. Take from this fairy tale that ye may. Booware has a LOT of work ahead of themselves'.
I decided to make an account to post about this issue.
Inquisition is my first Dragon Age experience, though I did buy Origins at launch on the PC. For some reason, I never got into it at the time, and never played it through. I have friends who played it and previous titles like Baldur's Gate, however, and I definitely remember watching the quirky and frequent party chatter happening, and listening to my friend talking about the characters as if she knew them.
It didn't occur to me at first that this just wasn't happening in Inquisition. I loved the cut scenes and the other conversations with characters, but I came to dislike adventuring out in the world because it was like wandering about on my own just killing stuff. No character interaction, just the occasional one-off comment from someone when I would come across an elven ruin or whatever. Then I came across references online to the banter bug, and found that my party was supposed to be TALKING to each other, and I was really disappointed.
So I started to notice that once in a blue moon - literally, once in every couple of days of play - I would get a small snatch of banter. I'd practically drop the controller and hush anyone who was with me in the room. "Ssh! It's banter! They're actually bantering!" But that would be it, for another several hours of gameplay.
I finished my first playthrough, and I couldn't tell you how many banters I had in it. A meagre handful, spread across all locations and all combinations of characters. Certainly absolutely no continuing conversations, or comments on my relationship, or anything fun like that. I started a new playthrough hoping that things might be different, but I played it for a week and I counted. ONE banter. Until yesterday, when I suddenly got three in an hour in the Storm Coast having just recruited Iron Bull and included him in my party. This was much more like it. If only the game could be like this, reliably, everywhere you went. It amazes and saddens me to think that they recorded five hours of this stuff. I have heard mere minutes of it.
So now I'm reading that there's a way of triggering banter manually using this Cheat Engine software. The thing is, I'm playing on the PS4. Is there any way of installing this on the PS4?
Unfortunately, there is no way to put CE on a PS4.

This bug is still frustrating the heck out of me. I tried Cheat Engine but I don't like the idea of manually firing off banter. I like the organic feel of having companions banter every few minutes while exploring. It's just not happening though. Once every 30 minutes sometimes, sometimes once an hour, sometimes not ever (Western Approach). The game is too quiet to not have banter every 5 minutes. Even the way it's supposed to work (every 10 minutes I believe) is too long in a game where music fades in and out so infrequently. Whole silent chunks pass by where I'm just running around listening to environmental noises and my character's footsteps. It's awful.
Trust me.. it's better to manually trigger the banter than waiting for them to talk. There are 5+ hours of recorded banter so you won't run out of banters by the time you finish the game.
