I have read (somewhere) that the banter is not supposed to trigger when enemies are around or during fights and yet my banter does this quite often.  I am not complaining but if the statement is true (re: triggering criteria) there is indeed something quite odd at work in that system.

Its kind of "funny" and rather odd listening to a two way banter, typically centering on the sarcastic, in the middle of a (supposedly) life and death fight with demons.

Maybe, they should have added combat banter so instead of having a condition where it doesn't trigger, it simply switches from conversational banter to combat banter, vice versa.

Now that would be interesting indeed!

Bioware could also use the same method for the ambient music so it switches from combat music to ambient then to a environmental tune that is appropriate. They can keep the music subtle so as not to disrupt the immersion of the game.. I assume that was the intent when they came up with this odd system of triggering banter in the first place..

So I did a simple experiment on my PS4. I got my smart phone set it for 15 minutes and fast traveled to the storm cost through the war table with black wall, bull and dorian in that order. I am logged on to the bioware servers and the internet. Once I arrived at the first camp I did not move the characters or the camera. I started the timer and waited. Approximately 10 minutes bull and blackwall fired a banter. Also the music was was a consistent 30 seconds every few minutes. They were talking about getting a drink after blackwalls personal mission was completed. I also completed blackwalls mission days ago as a side note. Funny thing is that if I were to play for hours normally I almost never got a banter. Is this the only real solution. Wait around for nearly 10 minutes at a camp not moving at all?

Ps as I was almost done writing this up which I did another test after getting on my war nug on the same camp, getting off quickly, fast traveled to the blades of hessarian camp(I own it), and waited again for 15 minutes. After not moving for for for 13 minutes the banter triggered again. They followed up by blackwall saying he grew a beard to hide his identity for so long. So the question for Bioware is how do we trigger banter when we are not waiting in camps? What is the perfect scenario to possibly get banter by just playing the game and having fun while not waiting around at a camp for the banter to trigger?

One quick update I honestly don't believe I have ever hear them speak once together. And it does seem like there was other conversation that happened that I never heard on screen. Maybe someone know if they heard previous banter between blackwall and bull before blackwalls(TR) personal quest.

Also lets be honest hear when we (or at least I) play normally and I'm going from one quest to another there's going to be enemies that come up in front of my path and so I'm going to kill them with whatever team I feel like bringing along. I'll play. kill, fast travel, loot, do quests, go to skyhold, war missions, upgrades, talk to companions yada yada yada and when I'm out in the filed doing quests or fighting whatever comes my way there are moments when there are no enemies for at least 30 seconds and for two hours or more I swear(as I also assume most people agree) I didn't hear one banter between two party companions. So whats the perfect scenario to finally trigger a banter without sitting in place at a camp?

Yeah, Blackwall and Bull actually have quite a few banters, even before his personal quest. I got a lot of them using the CE trigger in Crestwood, best in Old Crestwood and The Flats area for some reason.

Playing on XBOX ONE. Since the download of patch 5 party banter is now really consistent on my installation. I get party banter on any map approx every 10 to 15 minutes.

I am wondering this too. I don' want to wait around at camp for banter to trigger. I want to play the game, but playing the game sees to result in no banter... especially if it's true that combat resets the timer.

I haven't been here in a bit, but I did want to clear at least part of this up.  Back in December when I was recording and submitting saves to Conal for testing, he let me know that banter isn't supposed to trigger at camps.   So that is straight from a dev.

When it comes to the combat, I found that is what it takes to get the banter to kick in sometimes.   If I've been having trouble with banter firing, I usually go find an open rift.  Typically they start talking right after I close it.  So I'm pretty sure that combat is related to the banter trigger somehow.  <shrug>

So Natashina says combat is needed to trigger banter, and Heidirs states that combat supposedly resets the timer. Lol which one is it?

Bioware if you are reading this, could you please clarify how the banter has been tweaked so we know the proper situation to expect banter to trigger? Thank you.

I suspect that even they don't know how it works.

They probably know how it's supposed to work, but we could also probably find over ten dozen cases where it works differently.

Yep, pretty much.  When it comes to party banter and combat, I'm only passing my personal experiences along.  ;)

For me Banter usually triggers when i change zones on a map(not maps just areas inside a map), when i'm walking around and the zone name pops up that usually triggers Banter as well.

A developer went over this.  Here is the link:  http://blog.bioware....in-inquisition/

Obviously though it's still not good.  It should work way better than it does.

Actually I know about http://blog.bioware....in-inquisition/ but that was the untweaked version. I wish to know what the new best version to expect banter to fire without extra long periods of waiting, which many times are still long periods, way over 20-30 minutes in the open world. So what am I (and other non pc users) doing wrong. Is the banter counter getting reset once we are in combat???

I am finding that banter seems to trigger more in areas where I've already killed or there are no enemies. I finished pretty much everything in the Exalted Plains, and while there I had 2 banters within 15 minutes. I've noticed this elsewhere, too. For me, it seems, if there's aren't any red dots near by, banter is more likely to go off. I don't know if that's typical for other people, but I find it really annoying because most of your time in the game is spent battling enemies - during which I'm getting almost no banter at all.

I'm getting more banter now - although some of it is single lines that have the feel that they should be part of a conversation; and I'm still regularly getting the voices speaking all jumbled so it sounds like the person is talking backwards. (Xbox360 post latest patch)

So, it's been a while since I've played, as I've been waiting for party banter to get fixed. I play on PS4 and had almost zero banter before patch 3. With patch 3, I do have a bit, but still not much. I know there have been updates since. So, you guys: Should I pick up the game again or is it still broken?

If banter is your concern, I think it's worth picking up again. I'm on the PS4, and I hear much more banter than I used to after patch 5 and by keeping the codex clear.

You'll never know if the banter works for you specifically until you pick it back up. There's no way to tell if the results other people are getting will be the same you experience.
