Thank you guys for your replies! I think I might give it a go tonight and see if patch 5 has made it better. Thanks for your advice.

I've had much better banter on my PS4 since I started clearing the codexes (and just the codexes, I don't bother with the quest lists).  I have no idea why, but it seems to be working across 3 different character playthroughs.  Previously, a few hours in and my banter would just stop and an oppressive silence would set in.  It's sort of a pain to constantly clear codexes that I've already read in a previous playthrough or have no interest in, but so long as I have banter, I guess I'll do it.

Sure would be nice to have a "mark all as read" selection for the codexes so I don't have to either click on everyone or try to spot the little shiny thing in the corner of the unread one.

Man I'd been doing so well. Today had a 4 hour session only 1 banter. :/ (And I reloaded in the middle of it because it started at the beginning of a battle and I couldn't hear). I'm not near the end of all my banter chains, I know that. I switched around my party members more than usual, I wonder if that has something to do with it.

I've been watching my husband play on the PS4, and I think he's getting WAY more banter than me on the PS3. Then again, he's also wandering around the dessert with nothing to fight...

Does anyone else think 15 minutes is too long? Maybe I'm just greedy. I really wouldn't care if banter ended up repeating, maybe they could activate the "skip" button.

My findings on PS4 since the last patch - banter seems to trigger after the end of a battle or after closing a rift as it did before, and fires somewhat more frequently. It's spotty traveling around, sometimes longer than 15 minutes with no "events" that should restart the timer.

I also thought it would not work in camp, so I've never tried that. Interesting.

We just got the PS4, and since I have a playthrough on PS3 I haven't finished, we agreed he got to play on the PS4. But now I know banter is working better there, I might have to wrestle it from him.  :P

I believe there is almost 6 hours of possible conversations between all party members. In all my playthroughs I've only ever heard a fraction. I had to look on YouTube to hear the full conversations. And I can note at least one instance where dialogue repeated itself. It was between solas and iron bull about how he sacrificed his people in that one quest. I heard it over and over to the point where I never have those two in my group at the same time. If you aren't finding a problem here, then maybe you are the problem.

since ppl had such great experiences i think i will try nu titans solution.
i have banter but very infrequently. and i fast travel around a lot and that seems to reset the timer. it would be great if it kept on counting even when in skyhold. fast traveling to an area makes for a safe place to trigger it after all.i am on pc.

i tested my banter in redcliffe, just standing around. it triggers every 10 to 15 mins but in other instances where i was plucking herbs it did not seem to trigger.
i want to play and not twiddle my thumbs ( or, in my case, knit)

i also wonder if the inner circle romances only start if there was banter concerning the respective party beforehand.

I just looked on youtube and there's over 5 hours worth of banter

I'm 30 hours in and I've probably heard, what, something like 8-10 banters at the most? That's terrible. They took the effort to have this much banter, so please fix this issue so we can actually, you know, hear it.

Seriously, this is one of that features that makes Dragon Age stand out among other games and...it doesn't even work properly.

So I've noticed that banter seems to be improved on the PS4 (for my husband, at least). Today, started up the PS3 and set a timer, and I seem to be getting banter every 15 mins. I don't know what happened. I haven't been getting banter this frequently previously. I haven't played the past day or so, and before that I was at the winter palace. Maybe patch 5 really did fix something (for me at least)?

I wandered around the HIssing Wastes and purposely did not use a mount. I tried to record everything I thought might interfere with banter. When I stopped getting banter, I changed up my party. I also noticed there were times when banter seemed to trigger when I stopped moving to record something... I don't know if that's just a coincidence or not...

I did test to make sure the banter wasn't somehow map specific. Traveled to Exalted Plains and got banter 14 minutes after arriving. So it seems like banter is working for me now. I'll have to keep playing and see if things break or hold. I should probably start a new playthrough and make sure things work from there as well.

EDIT: Not much luck with the Emerald Graves. I think going into the villas, which brings up the loading screen, restarts the timer.

I didn't think of the loading screens restarting the timer, maybe you're right. Saturday I got ONE banter in FOUR hours....but I was in a lot of loading screens with fast traveling and going in and out of Echoback Fort. I'll try to avoid loadtimes next time I play, see if that helps. Thanks for the tip.

I will play around Emerald Graves some more and see if I can get banter to work as well. Now that I've been tracking how long it takes banter to trigger, I've been doing a lot of "oh, it's been 10 minutes since my last banter. Let's wander around for a few more minutes before I travel back to Skyhold/fight that dragon/go into that area/whatever" and that seems to have helped. I might have to start playing with a stopwatch near by. It's certainly improved my enjoyment of the game.

As I note, I had one banter that took 20mins to trigger. So it doesn't always hit that 15min mark.

EDIT: On another note, I also wonder if the going into the radial menu (leveling characters, managing inventory, checking the map) pauses the timer for banter. I was in the radial menu at some point while waiting 20min for the banter previously mentioned and before I changed parties in my previous post from 10:23 to 10:28. If the radial menu pauses the timer like it pauses the game, that would explain why banter took longer in those instances.

When in the Emerald Graves, be sure to take note of the often very short environmental comments the companions make - those count as banter too and will reset your timer, even though they usually only consist of "Oh look, a tree!" or something. It's easy to just overhear or dismiss them because they're so short and inconsequential. I think that's why it feels like there is little to no banter in the Emerald Graves, at least that was my experience last time I went there.

ETA: Oh and yes, being in any menu should pause the timer, at least it does on PC (that's what CE tells me, at least), so it should be the same for console versions.

I thought the environmental or quest comments might reset the timer (which is ridiculous because there's so much of that dialogue), but in my exploration of the Hissing Wastes, I was still getting banter every 15mins regardless of other dialogue. I'm not sure if that's some blip in the game or not. But in that particular session, extra dialogue wasn't effecting banter. I'll take notes on my next session and see if it stays the same. And, as always, what's happening on my end doesn't mean it's the same for other people... but all I can do is report on my experiences. This recent surge of banter on my end is very strange.

On PC I had many party banter from the beginning. Then, since patch 3/4, no more banter, silence. And no banter with patch 5 either. All with the same character. I now started a new character and now I have party banter again. Not so often like in the old days before patch 3/4, but that might be intended, don't know. I hope, no future patch or other circumstances will break that (again).

I found certain party members together had more banter than others. My main group consists of Blackwall, Iron Bull and Cole. The banter is frequent and funny! If I try anyone else, it's quieter. Sometimes I think the relationships between the companions affects the banter too (Blackwall first told Cole he didn't trust him, after 4 hours of playing as that group, he said Cole was alright, like he was getting used to him). Varric and Cassandra talk a lot too. Could be my imagination, but it seems to be based a lot on relationships.

Silith is correct. I don't know if this is true for all maps, but it seems true for the Emerald Graves.

6:07 - entered the area

6:22 – Casandra "This place almost makes me forget about the war."

6:37 - Cole "this is better than war"

6:44 – vila entered (loading screen)

6:48 – villa exited (loading screen)

7:02 – party banter

7:15 - party banter

After getting Cole and Casandra's environmental dialogue, I switched them out for Sera and Blackwall and got the normal party banter.

So, at least in the Emerald Graves, don't take Casandra, Cole, Varric, or Dorian. Their one-line environmental comments will count as party banter.

I'd have to try a play through in the Emprise. There's environmental comments from Dorian and Vivienne there as well, and I don't know if they effect party banter.

I don't know if there's other maps with environmental comments...

I never really noticed the banter/music problem or paid attention to it. Freaking 72 pages of reply and bioware just ignores it? That is just ridiculous.
I'll try the reddit fix tonite and see.

Last time i played for the first time with Cole and no banter came out at all. Same of Iron Bull.

I read a statement from Bioware that there is actually not supposed to be music in Val Royeau and Skyhold and that music in general is supposed to play for 30-45 seconds or something.

Bullcrap or what?

It's crazy that these one-liners count as party banter. I like the one-liners, but I want to hear my companions talk to each other. And I don't get when I play for two hours and only hear Sera complain about the green in the Emerald Graves and Cole comment how nice it it.

And there's certain areas where you don't hear banter at all. I just completed "The Knights' Tomb" quest and was there long enough to hear two banters, but instead heard nothing.

I'm seriously considering purchasing this game on PC so I can use the cheat that lets me activate banter on my own. I really don't like how the banter was set to work in this game.

The banter on PS4 actually works pretty good now. I posted that I've been testing this for a little while now. The place where I got most banter was (believe it or not) the hissing wastes. Not kidding. Due to the vast amount of space when walking around and not that much to fight probably helped. I unlocked the area for the first time last week. Traveling to unlock the party camps took a bit of time. With a timer set to 15 minutes and getting in a fight now and then I checked to see  if a single banter would trigger while I was going to unlock each party camp, and that also did include one liners. I consistently (due to almost never hearing any banter before now) got 1  banter before the timer was up. It takes sometimes a little less than 15 minutes, more around 10 minutes. I think the exploring and calmer moments when picking up plants, rocks, and shards gives you a better chance at hearing banter in general within 15 minutes. Tricky thing is that other than the hissing wastes, you'll normally get in a fight which is not bad, but having banter timer possibly reset due to the fighting is also not good. I say that it should trigger always once you reach a certain amount of time without banter and that your not fighting at that moment. Wow I did not expect to write so much. Lol.

So i did a few things from the reddit fix. Put my PS4 offline. switch audio to headphones (works anyway in my home theater) cleared de the codex entries. I traveled from the war room and then to Val Royeau. No music there. I took a new party to the Storm Coast (Cole Solas and Iron Bull) and i had 2 environmental comment adn one banter including the 3 of them within maybe 30 min. Music starts here and there but always for a few seconds.

I guess i am ok if i take the staement i mentionned earlier from Bioware to be true.

I get music in Val Royeaux if I fast travel from the war room (directly or indirectly), doesn't matter if on or offline. Otherwise, no music. I have PS3.
