The thing is this game is done with Frostbite 3 engine, same as in BF4.

BF4 was notorious for having audio cut out for a LOT of players (me included) on some of their multiplayer maps. The audio just die and you only hear your footsteps and gun shooting, nothing else.
There was also Z-fighting on some of these maps, Z-fighting is the texture flickering, two textures of different value one usually  LOD texture. And they both are "fighting" to be shown. A lod texture is a texture of lesser quality shown at distance to lower requirements and heft of the textures.
That is what the flickering is. the game cannot decide which texture to show. Something like that.

I digress.

My point is that this game has or have some of the same issues. It is not hard at all for me to think this is what is happening here in some form. Some kind of audio bug for music and banter.
Perhaps it is time for Bioware to contact BF4 team at DICE that finally fixed the "no audio" bug etc. Maybe there is a solution somewhere in there. A tweak.

If they have it in BF4 too and no fix until now it makes me feel even more pessimistic.

Hi, I am on PC, with a physical copy of the game, have played for 100+ hours and I have experienced the banter bug.

I have heard exactly 10 banters throughout my entire playthrough, and can name who they were between and what they were about. I very rarely use mounts, I've been in all the regions, and I have subtitles on for both ambient and conversation. When the very rare instances of party banter did occur, the subtitles for them showed up, so it's definitely not an issue of missing it because of audio. My companions also comment on places to ping-search and camping sites.

I have music in Val R, unlike most with this bug, but not consistently anywhere else. Ambient sounds (rivers flowing, birds chirping) and combat effect sounds are audible, but almost never any music, and definitely not combat music.

Just activated a forum account here so I can make this post. Maybe it will help.

I am playing on Windows 7 with the Deluxe Edition hard copy and am experiencing many audio issues including the lack of banter and background music. I am 60 hours into my first playthrough. I have yet to touch the main missions after reaching skyhold, mainly due to the Guest Face/Inquisitor voice bug, so that may give you some idea of what I've done and what banter should be available to me. I have been at this point in the story for a while now and for the longest time I heard very little. What I did hear was typically directed at or initiated by Solas. Now there's more, and it seems mostly directed at or intiated by Cole.

Oddly enough, doing the opposite of the suggestions has had the desired effect for me. My rate of banter has increased now that I have pretty much a static party (Cole, Cass, and Solas) outside of companion related side quests. They talk to each other quite a bit now, whereas switching anyone out will result in awkward silence for hours. I've taken up riding more, and have been clearing as much of a map as I can before moving on to the next place, which means I'm staying in the same place for a really long time. I've also turned half the subtitles off now hoping that would help. Maybe it did. Something did.

I have noticed that nearly all this increased banter happens right after combat has finished. Sometimes with two back to back. In one case I had a Cole-related banter initiate after a fight, then a second non-Cole one begin straight away, even though we got ambushed, so they were talking over combat.

Another thing to mention. I had Varric begin a banter after quick traveling to a camp once. He got a couple words out but the requisition officer wandered into range of me and gave her "Inquisitor" greeting which for some reason cut him off even though I didn't initiate dialogue with her. Reloading the auto save and resting wouldn't make him restart it. So if the no repeat thing is true, I guess I'll never know what was said. Seems like there is a sound priority issue.

weird thing is, i have the audio bug in bf4 till today (mostly in vehicles) but have no problems with it in da:i. sure there are passages your people are quiet, but the game is dozens of hours long, so dont expect a constant flow of it (so i really dont know if its really buggy or people expecting just too much)

It's a credit to how good this game is that I am enjoying it as much as I am even without the music. I'm on my second playthrough.

I was only half joking when I offered to send over my PS4. Clearly I have a setup that is bugging out so that might be useful. I have as of yet not tried any of the workarounds, but I have done the things that OP listed.

I will try to stream more when I can, and if there is anything you want me to try out and record just let me know (drop a PM) and I'll see if I can make it happen. I am currently out of a job so I don't really have anything better to do anyway. XD

I will leave my stream here again just for good measure: http://www.twitch.tv/spiritmuse

Stop making excuses.

You cannot with a straight face say that there might not be a bug when a CRAP load of people report playing for 80 hours and getting 10-20 banters. It is statistically improbable that several people can play a game for almost 100 hours and not trigger any banter. There would be TONS of opportunity for it to happen. Hence it IS A BUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just because you have a certain sort of expectation from something doesn't actually mean the game itself was created with that intention in mind.

You might have expected swimming in this game for example, and find out you can't, and list it as a bug. You may even write articles about how you think there should be swimming and talk to everyone else who also think that swimming is the game. But if it's not in the game it isn't in the game. It isn't a bug.

My point is, at the end of the day, is that you are a layperson (I'm making the mother of all assumptions here, forgive me but bear with it), you do not know for sure what the actual intended behaviour is. Bioware has tested it due to the listed concern and have found no fault. Seems pretty clear to me that what is occuring is actually intended and therefore, strictly speaking, isn't a bug.

We know from the twitch stream at least that Mike mentioned that

a) You can't milk the conversation frequency. No more walking across the bridge in redcliffe type scenarios.

We know also know that you are gated through storyline missions. I don't know about you, but I'm a bit of a completionist. I purposely delay the next story content until I get through all those War Council boring things. If I find myself out for extended periods of time in a single zone (for example Hinterlands, I was there for ages) then obviously I'm going to exhaust my conversation banter.

I am sorry but I find this post extremely patronising and offensive. I played the game in COMPLETE silence for 70 hours. No background music EVER . And no banter. Sorry, had a few one liners and 5-6 banter in 70 hours. 6!!
How can you make the assumption that all these people on the thread they kinda just whining without real merrits? That i did not notice what i had till now, only i had high expectations and the SILENCE is indeed intended. Please, using your reasoning, justify it for me why I have to play through an entire game in complete utter silence. Do you truely believe that this is the experience what the developers intended to give us? ONLY listening to our own footsteps for 70 hours?
Agh..:/

Dude (I'm assuming), I only have 10 hours of play in one of my characters, have 3 new characters on board (Viv, Sera, IB), and in a completely new area (storm coast) and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS for over an hour.  That is not normal, and I really find it condescending that you would insinuate that it's due to expectations.  Just a quick breeze through this thread and you would find minute-by-minute accounts of fans playtesting this issue, which in my mind conclusively prove there is an issue.

Crossposting…

Here’s what I propose for the PC players: sign up for Twitch. It isn’t too bad, unless you’re absolutely at the limits of your machine already. I don’t know if any consoles support streaming? If so, do so.

I use Open Broadcaster Software to record (I found it simplest to use; Twitch has links and installation instructions) and since video quality is of little consequence I have the max bitrate as 2000, resolution downscale is set to 3x and broadcast at 24 FPS which reduces the resource use even more.

Important: turn on archiving in Twitch settings. This will save your videos for two weeks, for free, which will hopefully be enough.

I’ll try to get some playtime today myself… unfortunately I didn’t have archiving on when I streamed some gameplay earlier  :( So make sure you turn it on!

I was traveling through the Hinterlands and was just leaving the Redcliffe Farms area when I noticed that Solas had the dialogue bubble next to his portrait.  He didn't say anything, though and that bubble remained next to his portrait until I returned to Haven.  I also didn't have any music play during that time either in or out of combat.

Arijharn, with respect, this isn't a matter of expectation versus reality for most of us. This is the game not functioning as intended. I invite you to any of our streams, any of our houses. You'd undoubtedly wind up saying the same thing all our unaffected DAI-playing friends have upon your arrival -- "you're glitched."

We know from direct evidence that there are severe discrepancies in banter rate between people—and between different characters. People are seeing 10 banters in total in 50+ hours. Conal’s clarification also expressed that they do believe there is a problem, just that they haven’t yet reproduced it.

Like I illustrated earlier, the game has (at least) 3 hours of banters—this is recorded. At a guessed average of 30 seconds per banter, if we spread that out every (pulled out of hat) 20 minutes, that makes 110 hours of exploration to exhaust it. Not combat, not quests, not Skyhold/Haven; exploration.

It’s obvious that something is wrong. If you don’t have the bug, or don’t care, that’s great :)

Please also note that banter does not recycle, so you will only hear a set of lines once. The rate at which it occurs is also random, which is why sometimes you will encounter it more frequently, and sometimes less so.

This is wrong, as I have heard the "Eye Spy" with Varric and Cassandra a good dozen or so times...

Hi,

I logged my experiences as well since I'm getting weird behaviour in the amount of banter - which makes me suspect I also have the bug.
Before I read about the possible bug from somewhere else - I noted that there seemed to be a lot less life to the characters out in the field compared to previous games.

Seeing the behaviour in Storm Coast at the bottom of the list I'm pretty sure that is not how it is supposed to be right?

The hinterlands parts seems more on par with what is designed but I guess the devs need to say yes to that question. Though that amount of banter during this session was the most I've had for a long time. I've experience long stretches of time in silence. I think Hinterlands have worked the best - while storm coast is pretty silent and val royeaux is dead silent banterwise.

In any case, I'll hold off on progressing the game further until a fix is done. If the companions are supposed to talk about previous quests, I shudder at what I might have missed, and most likely I'll need to restart the entire game (which makes my heart sink) and throw away 35 hours of gameplay - not to mention that the so important First Impression is not what it should have been.

In my opinion - it is important that we get more advanced details about how the system is supposed to work. I sincerely don't get the "they are talking all the time"- feeling others have reported but this is subjective. It feels pretty cold and sparse. Sera comes off as retarded when the first thing she says after several hours is "Dwarves are ****."
So far my banters all involved Varric except for two, which had Cass+Blackwall and Blackwall+Viv. Most banters I've heard has been between Varric and Cass and they have been about 5-6 roughly.

So the below is a 2½ hour test with a lot of running around picking up flowers and fighting bears and spiders and mabari.

0min - Starting in Val Royeaux - Varric, Sera, Dorian (this party has never been together before. Dorian has just been recruited, and Sera and Varric has never been in the same party before.)
no music is played - is it supposed to?

no banter or comments for 30 min
30 min - travel to Hinterlands
32 min - Banter between Dorian and Varric
38 min - Varric monologue "..great job blondie". Heard it before so a repeat.
45 min - mount/dismount
48 min - Varric/Dorian banter
1:02 Varric/Dorian Banter in camp after Rest
1:03 Travel to Stormcoast
1:06 - Sera/Varric banter. First time Sera banters.
1:06-1:16 Standing idle in the middle of nowhere
1:16 Varric monologue "...moldy dwarves"
1:28 Varriac/Dorian banter
1:39 Sera/Dorian banter
1:41 Back in Val R. Still no music
1:49 Back in Haven
1:50 Storm Coast with Solas, Viv and Bull - these have never been together before. Solas and Viv has never been to Storm Coast before.
2:30 no comment or banter from anyone for forty minutes.

No combat music played ever (is it supposed to?). The only combat shouts I hear are when someone is close to dying ("Hold on Bull!" - or somethin) or when a fight is done. Is it supposed to be like that? - Makes me miss the DA 2 style "Did you see that Hawke? That was beautiful!".

I am suprised they have not responded to whole MUSIC IS MISSING IN THE BACKGROUND part, I have no combat music, no music in zones and sure as hell no music in Val Royeaux.

Unlike this post, I know that this is a bug, because I used another save file from a friend and he has background music and I dont.

I have a question for Bioware:  Have you tried to replicate this issue on a fresh install, using the same installation package released to players?

The systems you are using to try to replicate the problem might have the correct version of every file (and drivers that have not yet been released to the general public).  But if anything went awry during the packaging process, when you were collecting the release version of every file to prepare the install package - well, the players might not have the same version of all of the software that you are testing in your lab environments.

Just a thought.

The banter system is also designed to work over the course of a 150+ hour experience, so don’t be surprised if you don’t encounter everything within the first 60 hours. We wanted to give players plenty of reasons to keep coming back to Dragon Age: Inquisition, and this is one of them.

This is the problem, its not a 150+ experience its closer to 70 to 90 at best.

I am playing on xbox one and have not had this issue. I expected banters to decrease due to size of the game. You take the relative same amount of banter as da2 and put it into DAI and it'll seem off.

As it is, I've been listening to danaduchy on YouTube upload the banters and they are hilarious and awesome so I am really sad some people are not experiencing it.

I would also say that while this game is massive 150 hours does seem excessive. I'm thankful that the team is looking into it and I urge us to be patient with them. I truly believe they want us to experience the best game we can.

I'm glad you weren't hit by the bug. :) How frequently would you say that music plays while you're exploring regions? And does music ever play for you when you're at Val Royeux?

We're all pretty certain it's related at this point. For some there is never any music anywhere.

I don't always notice the music while walking around but almost always while I fight. I even turned it up because the soundtrack really is excellent.

Music did play for me in Val Royeux, and I did not have issues with it. I have had moments where it's just quiet besides ambient sounds- no music. Usually notice it in the hinterlands.

This won't help most people, but am posting in case it helps a few:

I have a the pc version and 7.1 surround system. When I first played the game, the audio was all out-of-whack and music/ambient audio were barely audible.  I went into my soundcard's audio settings and enabled a stereo->surround mode, where programs/games think you have a stereo system and only use 2 channels but then the audio driver distributes that sound to all speakers.  Sounds great for me now.  The game's audio seems to work better for 2-speaker/headphones than it does for surround.

Won't help anyone with banter issues or music that is sometimes there but might possibly help someone who hears no music at all.

BIOWARE!

As creators of video game entertainment, I get that you want to make it right for everyone. I enjoyed the game with the little amount of party banter, so why would you focus on such a small thing? Meanwhile there is a dragon who has infinite babies at it's command, and killing said dragon takes too much of my gosh darn time. As a company who wants to get things right, why would you make such a dragon, why would you make pretty much only 4 different armors? How could you say, they are gonna love this, and really believe it? It's a great game, but you have to admit, a straight up and down vertical two handed weapon is not aesthetically pleasing, and the fact that humans can have beards, tattoos, and scars, but not everyone else can is ridiculous. The management of this game failed it, there could of been more wow factors than ever, but there twernt. The resulting factor of an straight up and down great sword is a character-popsicle, and yet the whole team didn't think that?

That's my rant, needed a place to put it.

lol
