So...why the heck did Morrigan want the child in the first place?

I have no idea, Bioware miss the mark with this one sadly.

I'm guessing she wanted the old god's essence... it was the god of beauty? The other reason could be she didn't want the warden to die but I'm thinking it was first one though. Personal interest in the old god.

The child has a spirit inside it, which Flemeth wanted, and it seems to me like the dialogue dodged the question of why Morrigan wanted the child at the end back in Origins. Apparently she now loves him as her own child and has discarded his original purpose to raise him as her son... but I just don't get it. Why was she in such a hurry back in Origins?

Morrigan may have wanted one thing at one point but after having the child it changed her motives. She became a mother who wants to protect her child.

She still seems to be grooming him for his "destiny" but love ultimately muddled her original intentions

For the people who don't know why Morrigan wanted a child: you didn't play the game, did you?

They just want to get rid of the kid so they can leave the south I guess.

A lot of the dialogue with Flemeth confused me, because it was so many things at once, but I didn't get what was her motivation for wanting the child in the first place... And none of you have seemed to give me a direct answer to this either.

Morrigan doesn't always have a specific grand purpose. "Oh! Hey! Some random well of old knowledge or something. Time to drinky."
She wanted to preserve something from the past, the old god's essence -- that is "the" goal. She then intended to raise it and... maybe that was it. I don't think Flemeth ever told her what she wanted it for, but Morrigan is all for old magic preservation, so she co-opted the plan. And then she hid him from Flemeth and went all secretive because, frankly, she didn't trust Flemeth. Would you? Woman cackles like no tomorrow. Cackles.

If those reasons involved countering Flemeth, well...
Though now that I mention it, it was revealed that that was the reason Morrigan was to accompany the Warden. Flemeth wanted the Old God, Morrigan wanted the Old God because Flemeth wanted the Old God.
I think in the end they both got what what they wanted. Flemeth gets the Old God, Morrigan gets a son. Now, just to bring the Warden back into the mix... ![]()

I played it and I still don't know why. I pressed Morrigan for an answer and she responded "I prefer not to say."

Unless there is a Calling DLC storyline and they manage to create a proper default and customize option for the Warden I doubt he will appear until they can figure out how to run these things.

She wanted to preserve the ancient magic of old that have been long forgotten. There are very few things left in the world that contains the ancient magic and those things left can easily be destroyed thus destroying all remaining ancient magic. The Old God had knowledge of the ancient magic thus served as the being that could help prevent the destruction of Ancient magic.

Do you mean Morrigan wanted the old god so she could prevent Flemeth from "acquiring" it? (Thus becoming too powerful?)

Morrigan told me she wanted the Old God's soul because she thought preserving old magic was worthwhile (I'm paraphrasing). BUT she also says then she had a kid and became a mother, and it's clear her motives have changed somewhat. At this point, Kieran is much more to her than the vessel for an Old God soul.

When I first played, I honestly thought she intended to groom, train, and eventually possess the child much like Flemeth did to her daughters and was planning on doing to her. That would have been interesting.

It's been years since I beat Origins so I simply can't remember if we were told why. As far as I can recall however she was being very cryptic about it, and told the Warden to "trust her" or something along those lines.
A lot of the dialogue with Flemeth confused me, because it was so many things at once, but I didn't get what was her motivation for wanting the child in the first place... And none of you have seemed to give me a direct answer to this either.
people have given you direct answers. She wanted the Old God soul to preserve it. She says so directly, and, let's be honest, Morrigan is a bad liar.

The same reason she wanted to save the well of sorrows. Both Morrigan and Yavana were brought up to preserve the past. Yavana preseved the silent grove.Morrigan wants to preserve the old gods, old magical traditions, elven artifacts etc
They were both always Mythals servants.

I thought Morrigan's dialogue made it quite clear that she was all about preserving as much of the old world as possible. Old gods included.
yes but as Flemeth said to what END?

I think she clarifies a bit more if she encounters Flemeth with her kid in DAI- Morrigan freely admits she intially wanted the child for power (since he is extremely powerful and knowledgable even at ten years old) but then she grew to genuinly love him and says she'll die for him and wants to be a better mother than Flemeth. (Flemeth's face when Morrigan says that...ouch)
So yeah, she wanted the child first of purely for the power a child with an Old Gods soul would possss but then she grew to genuinly love him and now just wants to keep him safe.

Well, much had been lost so she wanted magic to return.
