"She knows they're going to kill her, can only save what's important. Precious space to remember her smile."

I *thought* this was Cortana from Halo saving a picture of John's smile when she's becoming fragmented, but the "her" throws me off... Maybe thinking of some other story with an AI that's facing deletion and saves a picture of its operator's smile?

"Old pain, shadows forgotten from dreams too real. This side is slow and heavy, but here is what can change."

I had thought this one was referencing himself, I could also see it being a ref. to Solas in some way.

I think Cole has a cryptic for each companion?

Someone had a theory on this one on Reddit that makes sense to me: Inception. They change memories through dreams, time slows down the deeper they go in the memories.

Aha! Got the "remember her smile" one...

Some of these are a lot more speculative. There's a few we've decided are pretty much definite, but then there are other's that we're kind of just grasping at straws for.

If only a dev were here. XD

I'm pretty sure it's Psycho.

No in psycho she's showering and he jumps through the shower curtain and kills her. Another one is bugging me which is "He hates the world because of the darkness behind the door, some doors shouldn't be opened"

I'm glad someone made this thread, since I was very curious about all the nonsense (from an inquisitor's POV) he was going on about. I'd also like to know about his references in banter conversations as well (particularly with Solas), though I imagine those are actually DA related (but still elude me, for lack of supplementary material and/or connecting the dots skillz).

I think this one would be more likely to be FMA then the other one.

"It wasn't blood in the bath. Fingers on the scalp, intimate, and then the moment is gone."

This one is Gone Home. You find a stain in the bathtub that looks like blood, but turns out to be hair dye. There's a note in your sister's diary about how intimiate it felt to dye her friend's hair, and the last sentence of that note is "and then the moment was gone".

Keep in mind that not all of Cole's dialogue refers to other media. Some of it refers to other characters in the game. For instance, he says something about stale cookies with raisins. Sera has a conversation with the Inquisitor about her childhood, which involves stale, raisin cookies if you romance her. This quote is almost definitely referring to Corypheus.

He hates the world and wants to become its god because when he opened the door to the Golden City, the City was black. It was black because when mortals entered it, they tainted it. Therefore, they should have not opened it.

If its not the interactive novel they said before, it could be the Valerie story from V of Vendetta.

THE Psycho? The one with the blond woman in the shower and the guy who keeps his dead mother in the cellar while pretending to be her? i have no idea how you think that relates to the quoted Cole line.

"It wasn't blood in the bath" ...  In order to get the texture/color right for the blood in the shower (since it was filmed in BW), Hitchcock used chocolate syrup.  (or at least that's the way I remember the story being told when I took my film class in grad school)

"fingers in the scalp"  ...  before she's stabbed, she grabs her hair and pulls while screaming.

"Kid, says the stone. Kid, kidding, it would keep me kept with a name, but the cairn can't catch me."

I think they are *all* references to the DA plot.  And they are references to what y'all are saying as well.

"She knows they're going to kill her, can only save what's important. Precious space to remember her smile."

I can't quite place this. I'm fairly certain the reference is to a woman deciding whether or not she has space for an old photograph while trying to pack a few important things in a hurry. The scenario sounds so familiar, but I can't recall what it is.

An old name burns inside of armor that shouldn't fit, lit by faces of children he couldn't save.

Isn't it about Blackwall, though?

I know, no spoilers, but...

I'm pretty sure he references It's a Wonderful Life, too, or something similar in a banter with Solas (some details are off, but it's the basic plot):

Cole: It sees him ready to jump. Pain pounding, pulsing, life of frustration can finally fall, to freeze.

Solas: Ah, yes.

Cole: It holds him high, shows the hole, where everything falls without him. He never needs to leave. He matters here.

Solas: That is one interpretation, yes.

Cole: You think it is different.

Solas: I think he fell, and it held him as he died, leaving him with images that told him his life was worthwhile.

Cole: That's much sadder. But yes. Calm, comfort, as the cold takes him away.

I could agree. At one point you have to decide which of the two AIs you're saving, and there's a way to save both of them from erasure if you put in the effort (and do a bit of counterclockwise thinking).

That's definitly a reference to Corypheus. He opened a door he shouldn't have.

Although, Fullmetal Alchemist kinda fits too, but Edward (protagonist) doesn't hate the world.

Yup, I connected it to Gone Home too. I never imagined I'd see a reference to such a niche game honestly, but cool nonetheless.

Cole is awesome! I always take him with me. He just keeps giving away secrets of other companions. And his comments on Bull's romance are just the best, even if not very work-safe)))

That sounds like an exact match to the quote. All I came up with for a possibility was The Grudge, but now I agree with you.

I do think the one about knowing they will kill her is V for Vendetta. I love that movie, and V comments about the woman remembering the smile of her girlfriend, before they take her to be executed, when speaking to Evie.
