I think I'm missing the obvious but what exactly is this a reference to?

 

An exploit in the game. If I remember right, if you looted a chest and left at least one item in it, then re-loaded the area, it would refill the chest. Some people used it to keep getting the power amulets that give you ability points and could max out all the ability trees. It was a good way to farm schematics, though...  

 

I don't know if they fixed the chest thing, but I believe they took out all or most of the amulets.

I know he is, but that's where my mind went. *shrug*

This might very well be from any book by Simon R. Green, where characters often talk about a certain character (Blue Fairy) with: "He's a half elf. Never trust an elf!" "he's half elf, and you can never trust an elf." etc etc ad nauseum. Not once, not twice, but a LOT...

More likely than the less than likely foreshadowing of a certain ingame character or another...
