Do they limit or eliminate falling damage if you are mounted?

You don't get damage at all. And horse doesn't die either.

Horsaineering is one of my favourite activities in the game.

I've taken up riding a lot more now that my hero outclasses most random encounters and I'd rather just trot past them. The animations and general horsie sounds are fantastic. I just wish the steps reflected the terrain better. Just a nitpick though.

I only have half the horses though, and I don't really care for the other mounts. Has anyone found them all? Are any Palomino? Wait, would that be a spoiler?! I want a Palomino.

By the sixth (I think?) story mission I was able to buy them all from the stablemaster. And, if I recall correctly, there is a Palomino, the second down on the list. I forget the name though.

I didn't really start appreciating horses until I went to the Hissing Wastes... Now that is a large open zone suited for a mount. ;p

Oh, and the horse master, when giving you your first horse, refers to it as "the chestnut in the barn". Took me a while to find the horse, as I was searching for an actual chestnut, while all the horse master's horses are bay! I've seen this mistake other places too, how odd.

Overall, fantastic horses, thank you for putting so much time and effort into them (I know it couldn't have been an easy task to make them as good as they are)!

the original bioware headquarters is in Calgary, Alberta. Not my part of Canada, but it's well known as a cow town, and for the Calgary Stampede. (If you do some googling you might be able to find a picture of our Prime Minister (national political leader) looking hilariously out of place at the Stampede wearing the obligatory cowboy hat). I imagine that even tho many Bioware staffers have never ridden a horse, as residents of Calgary, they would never get away with a bad representation of horses in DAI.

Your horse talk reminded me of the late Ian Tyson, a country folk singer songwritter, ranch owner operator and rodeo rider, Alberta born and raised I believe. I think he won a few "cutting horse" competiitions .: (kind of a sad song, but lots of horsy stuff)

Mounts have become very useful in reaching certain areas I have trouble getting to on foot.  Especially for getting to collection pieces in obscure places. They can jump higher.  Most of my own limited experience with riding horses was in forested, rocky terrain, so clopping around uneven cliffsides on a mount brought some of that back, haha.  And they definitely aren't slow, at least on PS3, speed depends on stick pressure, and just push on L3, and they'll run (*hart makes that funny bugle noise*).  There's one particular quest you can get in the Exalted Plains where I can't imagine how it can be managed without a mount... wouldn't be as fun.

The other day I was trying to climb a steep incline on the Storm Coast while mounted, and I was failing.  When I turned back to look for another way up, there were three darkspawn just staring like they'd never seen an elf riding a purple hart before.  Just trotted on by. :P

I didn't bother with mounts until very, very late in the game, but I'm glad I started using one.  Running around is a lot slower even with Fade Step, and it's preferable to simply ignore certain enemies when they don't give you exp or useful loot (for me, at least).  I just wish that mounts made scaling cliffs easier the way they did in Skyrim.  That would have really given them a boost in terms of utility...

Also, I noticed that there were a lot of mounts to buy or unlock, but the only one I used was the dracolisk.  Such a bizarre looking creature, but I can't see my elf riding a different one...

I'm glad this thread exists; I thought about creating one myself. I have worked as a riding instructor before and managed a camp's equestrian program. With that in mind, I wasn't expecting much from the horses in the game, but OP is totally on the mark. They're well proportioned and their animation is gorgeous. I love that they sniff down at the ground as if to graze if you leave them alone too long. And I adore the fact that the inquisitor will cluck to get them going rather than just the unrealistic "hiyah" (unfortunately, I now have the habit of clucking at the screen whenever my finger slips off the button and the horse slows down!). It just adds to the realism of the game for me. And I love my little Dalish paint pony--glad a paint was an option!

Don't ride anymore. Too much stuff to collect and too many trash mobs attacking me while I was riding by. Plus, I wasn't getting banter while riding.

This, this, and this.
Sorry, horses.

LOL Same. I thought this really was a terrible thing to have missed! It really took me a few minutes to realize that not a soul at BioWare knows the difference between a bay and a chestnut. It kind of embarrassed me for them and reminded me I was playing a game.

Personally I like the movement of the Skyrim horses better (I could watch my character ride his horse in Skyrim for forever) but I do think they move nicely here.

I also found the model rather generic... at least Skyrim horses have that heavy coldblood look to them that makes them pretty special to the world. The DAI horse looks like your average farm horse I see on the side of the road. No breed distinction whatsoever.

So glad I'm not the only horse person who could not find the chestnut!!! I eventually noticed the mount button appeared when I ran past the bay.
Was watching my brother play, he gets the instruction, goes to the barn and imediatley gets on the horse. I asked him how he knew and he says its standing right there with a saddle on. I made no comment..........

Haha, I just got to this part last night and had exactly the same reaction. Or rather, I wandered around, finally noticed a horse was saddled and spent a few minutes staring at it and going... "That's a bay." I think I repeated it often enough my partner got annoyed with me. But it is! ;)

Clearly Dennet must have been messing with us on purpose.

I love the mounts in this game, and the variety! Still, some areas you can't mount up and instead I just use Cassandra with charging bull to speed up movement.

In this game, there's crafting materials every 10 feet. Riding a mount mean you miss everything on the ground, so I don't see the point of mounts,

Mounts are nice if you have to travel a long distance without stopping.

As someone who has never sat on a horse, BUT loves a) animals and b ) animations, I love the horses as well and I ride as much as I can, even if it's just a walk around a corner. The animations are beautifull and I love looking at them. Same goes for the hearts.

To the OP's comment on rearing: I guess it is for people like me who don't know much about horses. It just looks good ;-) I like it.

The only thing that saddened me a bit is, that all mounts use the horse skeleton and animations. I find it the most obvious on the dracolisks; their slender built makes their legs sometimes look funny.

And the War Nug seems to walk on fists because they had to make the walking animation (which originates in hooved horses) half-way believable.

And they didn't change the sounds of footsteps. So dracolisks and war nugs sound as if they had hooves. I know this is a very minor thing, but it made me chose the horses over all other mounts (sadly, cause I'm a big reptile fan and dracolsiks would've been cool, but they just shouted too much "I'm a re-used skeleton and don't even have own footstep-sounds" to me while I used them; so I don't anymore).

But the horses, they are really awesome ^^ I wonder how great the others could (have) be(en), had BioWare (been able to?) invest/ed more time into them.
