So I thought it would be more fun to pick my characters' talents ratehr than let them auto-level but I do wonder if that wasn't a huge mistake.
Question 1>
I spent the bulk of Alistair's points in Strength to get him in great armor. Usually 2 pts in Strength 1 in constitution. Should I have been giving him constitution points instead to make him a better tank? He does seem to need a lot more healing than Shale.
Question 2>
Did anyone like the way the game assigned talents for their characters automatically?

The game is rubbish at assigning points, just look at Loghain.
You should get enough strength to wear Massive armor, and put everything else in dexterity. Constitution is rubbish for a tank.

Yep, enough strength for the armour (and you can get some of it from items), the rest into dexterity to boost defence. If you're on the pc and have 'wasted' points, you can download the respec mod and redistribute them for yourself or your companions.

For alistair, 42 strength. I like 45 to equip the blood gorged amulet. After that put everything in dex (assuming you keep him in shield focus). Once your dex exceeds your strength by abour 8 points, switch his weapon to dagger!

I usually assign points for everyone. I used to build Alistair with more constitution but found it pays more to put it towards dex as mentioned in previous posts. Actually, I can't think of any of my characters that have a high constitution.

Shale, I think her constitution is actually higher then his strength when you get her. Also I think the dog starts with higher constitution.

I go with 42 Strength for Alistair, then stop putting points into Constitution at 15 because I give him the Lifegiver ring. Everything else goes into Dexterity for the shield and Cunning for Combat Tactics.

You NEVER need more constitution, thanks to Blood Gorged Amulet and Lifegiver, which give you +22 con combined.
And when I say 42 strength, I mean 42 strength minus whatever +strength items you feel like getting.

Run around naked with max dex. I think you'll also be able to romance the darkspawn with such ideas too.

thanks for all the help. Dexterity and not Constitution eh... oh what have I done to poor Alistair. I assumed he needed a high Con score because Shale was surviving so well and had a high score.
I'll hunt for that respec mod (unless someone has a handy link)?

also of note, when alistair likes the pc character enough he gets a bonus to constitution. if he likes the character a lot or is in love he gets massive bonus to constitution. so really you don't have to put a lot of points to constitution.
