Negative Defense stats BUG

I'm over 70 hours into my first playthrough with my Male Human Warrior. I've been playing on Hard difficulty, and it's been really challenging. I spec'd my Inquisitor for damage, but I found it odd just how much of a glass cannon he was. 1 hit from nearly anything melee would completely get rid of a full bar of guard, and I'd die in 3-4 hits from anything else after that. Made dodge roll and counter-strike essential to combat survival.

For some reason, I decided now would be a good time to see what my actual defensive stats were...

My base melee/ranged/magic defense stats are at -99% (technically -89% bc of the Inquisition Perk.) All of my companions have their base stats at 0%, which makes sense. So, all of the defensive items I get don't really make much of a difference, bc I'm starting at a base double damage received. At first I thought "maybe this is just how crazy HARD difficulty is" but that doesn't explain why my companions have normal base stats.

I'm playing on PC. I've tried loading previous saves, unequiping and re-equiping armor, restarting the game. No idea what to do.

I couldn't find another thread with the same bug, If anyone has a link, please share.

I'm trying very hard to love this game, I really am. This is the first bug I've seen that I think is truly game-breaking though.

It's most likely not a bug.  Check to see if you have an item with the "Beserk' ability equipped to your warrior.  It grants massive amount of damage at the cost of -100% defenses.  It's a little one sided atm, and I kind of hope they'll tweak the ability because at the moment whenever I see something that says "beserk" I just toss it immediately.

I had this same issue. I was using my reaver and found a Beserk Axe and was like "HELL YEA" then after dying 5 times and trying to figure out how i died so fast I threw that axe off the cliff, Lit up the forest on fire and had an EPIC Bon Fire because I was Back to Kicking Ass and Taking names.

Thank you kind sirs, you are correct.

I've been using a rare maul for the past 4 levels that has the Berserk trait. I originally confused it with "rampage" which I don't use, so I thought I'd be spared the negative modifiers, and I completely forgot about it. I threw it out my skyhold window, and with no other 2-handers to use, I plan to take the fight to the baddies using only my fists!

All is right with the world again, thanks :)
