So basically I have only played through the game once about 2 months ago, i had never really looked into what was going to carry over from me1 to 2 because i didn't want to spoil to much of the story. Curiosity got the better of me and I started reading the forums and this got me wondering if I missed out on a ton of stuff. I only did a few side quests, garrius's escaped criminal and wrex's family armor along with the earth moon quest. With this in mind I have no idea who or what cerberus is and know very little about the shadow broker. going in to ME2 will i even be able to understand the story? Essentialy I only know the main story line, if there is anything absolutly critical and someone was willing to give me the spark notes on it I would be really thankfull.

Nothing is absolutely critical. You can always start a non-import ME2 game since there is a customizer on how ME1 ended that you use.
The import feature I think is just bone to us fans, to make us enjoy the continuity of the series.
The biggest decision are part of the main storyline of ME1 anyways. Stuff like the Racchi queen choice, your Virmire choices, your council choice. Beyond that, it is all rather minor or a way to keep the fans interested.

nothing much is revealed about cerberus in the first game at all, one side quest decision might effect your standing with them but i doubt will be a major plot point in 2. so dont worry bout it!

did you get the 2 dlcs yet? 1 has a ok to good story line the other is just a run n gun or hold the line type of missions.

There were actually 2 or 3 side quests that had something to do with Cerberus. And how can you not know about the Shadow Broker? You learn about him on your first visit to the Citadel. And the one quest directly related to the Shadow Broker will probably effect your standing with him/her/them/it.
But like someone said, you will be able to select previous decision options when you start a new game if you are not importing an old character.
