To start with I'll just say I loved DAI, it is miles ahead of DA2 and only a bit behind DAO, so this isn't a bash on DAI. This is meant as constructive comments about what worked well and what didn't in DAI.

The Size of DAI

Bigger is better right? Wrong. There is a correct size for everything, and for a DA game the best size is about Origins sized, not DAI sized. Why? Because of the word budget. If there is a limitation to the number of words (voiced) in the game then obviously there needs to be a limit to the number of characters and conversations. The primary reason DAI feels so empty is because it is too big for itself. In order to satisfy their word budget Bioware had to make the vast majority of character interactions in the new 'Open' conversation format.

-Open Conversations

These feel so much less cinematic than 'real' conversations and detract greatly from DAI. They simply don't work like real conversations and end up feeling more like MMO style quest givers than DA characters.

-Side Quests

There are far too many meaningless side quests, and this is a direct result of the size of DAI. If it had been smaller it would not need to fill so much space. DAI has so many side quests, and they are so lacking in content, simply because it doesn't have the budget to flesh them all out.

-Lack of Main Quest Content

DAI had a fair amount of main quest content, but not as much as DAO had. What it does have is great, however. I just wish there had been a bit more, especially more conversations rather than being primarily combat oriented.

All in all, DAI would have been a better game had the Hinterlands been half the size. If the Emerald Graves and the Exalted Plains had been combined into one zone about the same size as either one of them. If the Fallow Mire was the standard size for a zone, rather than being abnormally small. If they had gone for quality over quantity DAI would have eclipsed DAO, but as it is it only barely comes close to matching it. We can hope they learn to put more effort into making less content better rather than more content weaker for DA4 (or even DAI:expansion).

Size wouldn´t be a problem if they put there something meaningful, like proper sidequests, or they put something interesting of main plot to each location, instead of always do this or that... and by interesting I don´t mean notes of some Venatori or Red templars about chain of command, but events connected to main plot.

The bigger problem for me is that I am not kind of guy who is skipping locations, and by the time that I finished some, others were far under my level which is destroying challange in those zones, they should put in there level scaling.

Hah! And just after I make my own topic on this I find this one. Guess I am not the only one after all.
