Why coudn't you make that when you "ping" the area you would get a vidual indication of the direction the ping comes from? Much like echolocatio works.
It would make so much easier to locate loot at a glace, instead of turning around multple times. Also the ping sound or the visual indication color should be different for loot and for interactable objects such as doors or ladders or NPC's.
