All Your Mages are Belong to CTD

My hypothesis: In general, while playing as a mage I get far more CTDs than as a warrior or rogue.  So something related to mages is causing me to CTD.

Over the past several days I rolled four new mages and timed their CTDs. I averaged them throwing out the lowest and highest play times.  I then tried to average the CTD times on my warrior and rogue.  These were all tested in the Hinterlands with the same party and same settings on nightmare difficulty for a period of five hours.  All mages had the same skills chosen entirely from the lightning tree and were of different races and genders.

Mage 1 CTD Average: 28 minutes

Mage 2 CTD Average: 37 minutes
Mage 3 CTD Average: 31 minutes
Mage 4 CTD Average: 1 hour 44 minutes

Rogue CTD Average: 4 hours 39 minutes (only one crash)
Warrior CTD Average: nil

My request: Sample size matters.  My experiences may be aberrant.  Or I may not understand what I am doing to cause these crashes.  The issue might not be related to mages at all.

It would be really great if others with CTD issues could help test this.  I still need to test the other skill trees to verify that it isn't something specifically in the lightning tree. Only one zone was checked.  Only Solas, Varric and Cassandra were used.  And the more samples from every class the better.

If you would like to help me out, all you would need to do is record the time between your CTDs for a period and report your class, party, zone(s) and skill trees being used.  Thank you.  Any kind of help narrowing down unknown CTD issues would be useful.

-DISCLAIMER-  This is not a complaint. It is not a bug report. It is a request for help, to have some useful data and possibly help Bioware resolve issues related to CTDs.

Only when playing a mage for some reason.  And strangely, never in the mountains where you start (whatever they are called).

I would guess it has something to do with the spell effects; id suggest turning them down for the time being until future patches

played for 73 hours as mage. not one crash. although the goddamn dialogue bugs went into overdrive late game. it was pretty much "oh look a cutscene time to go to the loo/get something to eat/put dinner on/pick up the kids/check the car's fluids/ring the wife tell her to get take away because i forgot i put dinner on and burnt it."

Only bugs I've had are the camera spinning around and around which also goes into the settings.

I just did a short test.  I was able to play a mage for about a couple of hours using just the fire and spirit trees.  I am starting to suspect that it is the lightning tree causing the issues.  I know many of the skills in the lightning tree are not functioning properly, so it could be a related issue.

@ReadingRambo220

That was my first thought as well.  I have not noticed any significant difference with the settings turned down or up, aside from performance issues.  The tests were with everything on medium.  I normally play with every setting maxxed without any difficulties.

@Tevinter Soldier

For the sake of curiosity, do you use anything from the lightning tree?  If so, what?  Knowing that could help me locate the source of the CTDs.

I've gotten it rather frequently. It seems to be mostly during conversations.

Thanks.  That helps.  It definitely supports the idea that there is a bug in the lightning tree causing these issues.

I've had a couple CTDs and they seem to happen when I'm in tac cam and switching rapidly between characters.

I do have Dorian in my party and he uses Storm spells, so there might be a connection! I have a feeling it might be the spell effects as someone else suggested already.

Provided your on PC, you may want to let us know your specs. That seems to be more of an issue than the game. I've played mages for 2 playthroughs and haven't had any issues with CTDs.

I have been playing a mage for 5 hours without a single CTD now.  All I did was not use any lightning spells except for chain lightning.  So I think it is definitely a lightning-related bug causing the crashes.  I hope somebody at Bioware sees this thread.

Everything has been updated and all suggested CTD fixes I could find on Google have been attempted.  My next step is to load up on lightning spells again and see if I get a CTD.
