I have no idea what he's talking about, I only played the games. Will it be more clear later on or do we have to read the book to understand what he's talking about?

This is the odd section for this but

when you talk to him in skyhold, he's actually a talking Easter egg machine. He'll reference several movies, other bioware games, characters etc. But in general he's easy to understand once you realize his perspective on the world. Most of the time he's talking about other people's thoughts.  He's the guy who hears colors and smells touch more or less. He also becomes more understandable if you make him more human during his personal quest. He also talks about his role in Asunder but it's not like he's going to explain it like a wiki summery, he explains it from his perspective.
