I have no idea what he's talking about, I only played the games. Will it be more clear later on or do we have to read the book to understand?

*sigh* the lines he says to you are references to other things. A few of them bioware.
There's a reddit thread about it. The other stuff he says to companions? That's based on them

He talks about some guy called Rhys and Evangeline

Some of what he says seems very unintelligible but much of it is actually quite clever and profound. Psychological riddles almost. Kind of like the personification of a tarot deck interpretation, if THAT makes any sense.
He speaks in flashes of understanding, that which usually happens in our minds as thought processes but then is translated by us into sentences for the "real world consumption" or kept inside as mere thoughts unspoken. He gives psychological insights like a rubber band snaps. All speed and sting and no subtlety.
It's all word play. It means nothing but is not meaningless.

They're from the book "Asunder". Rhys is a mage, Evangeline is a Templar, Cole has a history with them.
The short is that Rhys was one of Cole's only friends.
Also, generally yeah Cole says random nonsense that I can only vaguely understand, but he had one comment that hit me pretty hard and made me chuckle a bit. Without going into spoilers, you know those little notes in Bioware games, with an antagonist basically talking to himself about his plans and about his enemies and he just leaves it out randomly? Cole mentions how the person is arrogant and wants people to find what he's been saying, that's why he leaves it out. It's nice to finally address that, even if it is just a little line and inconsequential in the long run.

Ok, so do I have to read the book or will he explain later on in detail?
I want to know his story so I'm expecting him to elaborate

You need to read the book. The game doesnt spend the time to have him tell you every little detail. It provides context for the mage - templar war

I don't know, I'm not far enough in the game to know if he'll elaborate upon it. He has given me a super brief summary of what happened in the book, but because it's Cole it's annoyingly mysterious and hard to understand. I understand what he's talking about but if you haven't read the books it's like "Um, what?"
You don't have to read the book, but if you have the time and want a greater insight into Cole's character and the ACTUAL beginnings of the Mage-Templar Conflict, I would read it. Also Wynne and Shale are in it.

Oh, yup. They're from the book. If you read Cole's codex entry you'll find a little (and I mean a very little) insight on Evangeline. You also might wanna check out the timeline I made. Might clarify things a tad. Or you could always just go onto the wiki. : P

The book was great for me because it got me obsessed with Cole. He belongs to me, and no one else. *hisses*

The first thing I did was tell him to get off my table and sod off. Let all filthy homeless demons know, you'll find no shelter in the inquisition.

I haven't read the book, but I do read the codex entries, and have the subtitle on so I make sure to catch what he is say.
It's pretty compelling story as it unfolds, and there's at least one critical point where decisions you make change cole, one way or another.
