I have not played enough to figure this out yet, or have been able to test it myself.....
Do your companions level up with you when you keep them at "home base", or do you have to actively use them?
Sorry if there is already a post about this, but I am trying to avoid looking around too much because I don't want to catch an accidental spoiler.
They level whether or not they are in your party. Seems like they are always one level lower than you and you don't level at the same time.. as in, you reach level 14, wander around and kill, they reach level 13, etc.
True, the Inquisitor is always the highest level. I like it this way, because then leveling happens more often instead of all at once. Spreads it out a little, but keeps it evenly spread.

Agreed, I like the balance as well.
