Pretty noob question here, but I'm noticing enemies with swords are blocking the KE sword quite often (I think they're blocking with the sword, anyway). Noticed it with templars so I thought maybe it's magic defense, but then I noticed it with white claw raiders and hurlocks too. So what causes this and what are good strategies for getting around this defense?

I've done a forum search and google search but 'block' is a rather general term, so I haven't come up with much...

ETA: Now that I'm here I may as well ask this too, unrelated as it is-- I seem to be triggering a lot of nightmare combos, but I'm pretty sure none of my companions are using any sleep inducing abilities. Is there another way to trigger nightmare?

Because this is an "action RPG" and sometimes enemies block your attacks with their active defenses.

Ok, but what is an "active defense," are any stats involved, who does it (anyone with swords?), and is there any way to get around it aside from disabling or dropping aggro?

I don't have anything against the mechanic really, it just seems a bit less transparent in the way it works compared to the dudes with the enormous shields.

Also, is it just me or is keyboard control of the KE sword really dodgy? Under player control, my inquisitor and Vivienne are insistent on only doing a single slash instead of the combo, regardless whether I hold the button, press the button, use tactical cam or over-the-shoulder cam. I'm pretty sure I need to be holding the button in OTS and pressing the button in tactical. Also, under AI control they seem to do an OK job at using it properly.

Thing is, they usually do start comboing after a few single slashes if I keep at it. And if I switch to controller input, holding the button or mashing it works without a hitch, combo every time.

Also, is it just me or does the AI have zero consideration for avoiding friendly fire? In fact, after Dorian set Bull on fire (presumably accidentally), Bull turned around and used Charging Bull in Dorian's direction, a direction which contained no enemies. Was that payback? Is it because Dorian is a Vint? Or is the AI just so bad that it actually seeks out opportunities to commit friendly fire?

Also, is a Deep Mushroom some kind of cordyceps growing out of a baby giant spider?

None of these have anything to do with blocking, I understand, but they are things I must know all the same.

Ha ha. Personally I love how they use Charging Bull sometimes - running at nothing. Sometimes they do it great, sometimes they run off at nothing, and sometimes they take out allies. Mostly they do good though.
